Fresh water, which is defined as containing 250 milligrams per liter chloride or less, in the Chicot aquifer is characteristically hard and high in iron concentration; in this area the hardness is generally 200-300 milligrams per liter. The soft-water zone, containing water with a hardness of less than 60 milligrams per liter, is anomalous and occurs in an area where the basal part of the aquifer is separated from the main body of the aquifer by a thick clay layer. The zone has been mapped in parts of St. Martin and adjoining Lafayette Parishes.\r\n\r\nAlthough the exact areal extent of the zone cannot be determined with available data, it appears to be sufficiently large that the soft water should prove to be an important asset to the area. The water could be used by itself or mixed with either hard or slightly salty water (more than 250 milligrams per liter chloride) to provide a blend that would require little or no treatment for most purposes. Because of the proximity of salty water in much of the area, careful planning and monitoring will be necessary to maintain the soft-water zone as a dependable supply of usable water. At 65 of 131 sites on streams that were sampled at least 10 times, the biochemical oxygen demand of at least half the samples exceeded 3.0 mg/l. At 20 of the sites, the dissolved-oxygen content of at least half the samples was less than 5.0 mg/l. The higher concentrations of minor elements usually were detected in waters from urban areas, indicating a relation to man's activities. Small amounts of some pesticides are widely distributed in low concentrations. The work for this second annual data report was financed by the National Park Service. The work for the first annual, report (Larson, 1974) was financed jointly by the U.S. Bureau of Sport Fisheries and&nbsp;the U.S. Geological Survey.</p><p>Continuous recorders were used to monitor water levels in Devils Hole, two observation wells, and the flow from four springs. Also, monthly readings were made on two wells to help define a general trend of ground-water levels. Also, monthly meter readings of six electrically powered irrigation wells provided a record of power consumption, which in turn is a measure of the amount of water pumped.</p><p>The purpose of the work is to observe the effects of groundwater withdrawals for irrigation on the level in Devils Hole and the flow from the major springs in the area. A topographically high, east-west-trending end moraine divides most of the watershed into two drainage areas of approximately equal size. The North Fork Crow River drains a mixture of glacial outwash and till deposits, whereas the South Fork Crow River drains chiefly till deposits. Local relief is greatest in morainal areas and least in surficial outwash areas.</p>\n<p>Cambrian and Precambrian sedimentary rocks underlie the glacial drift in the eastern part of the watershed. Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, though discontinuous, are present in part of the western two-thirds of the watershed. Where sedimentary bedrock is absent, the glacial drift is directly underlain by Precambrian igneous or metamorphic rocks.</p>\n<p>Forested areas are sparse and occur mainly in steeply sloping morainal areas. Of this amount, 83 percent occurs during the growing season (March 15 to October 15). A part of the precipitation runs off as surface flow, part is evaporated, part is used by vegetation, and a small part percolates downward to recharge the ground-water reservoir. The average recharge from precipitation for Hamilton County is estimated to be 0.1 inch per year. Some 780 oil and gas fields had been discovered. Estimated worldwide volume of oil discovered offshore as of January 1, 1973, is 172.8 billion barrels of oil, or about 26 percent of the world total, and 168.4 trillion ft3 of natural gas. Present reserves of oil are 135.5 billion barrels, of which 70 percent is in the Persian Gulf.
