These beds, exposed in the Bani Khatmah area near the southeastern edge of the Arabian Shield of Saudi Arabia, contain normally graded polymictic conglomerate, commonly in fluvial channels cut into mature quartz sandstone. None of the features observed suggest deposition in a glacial environment. The conglomerate beds constitute a laterally and vertically restricted facies about 150 km wide in the quartz-sand facies of the Wajid.
Recent palynological evidence suggests that the Wajid Sandstone is of Cambrian or Ordovician age. The conglomerate of the Wajid is probably derived from locally uplifted Precambrian rocks in the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula. This is in contrast with an otherwise extensive, stable, deeply weathered, and low-lying Precambrian Shield that was the source of the predominant quartz sandstone of the Wajid during early Paleozoic time.

Gravel resources may be exhausted by exploitation, covered by urban spread, or eliminated from production by zoning. this conflict between a growing need and a progressively reduced supply can be forestalled by informed land-use planning. Fundamental to intelligent decisions on land use is knowledge of the physical character, distribution, and quantity of the gravel resources of an area, and of the alternative resource of rock suitable for crushing. This map has been prepared to supply data basic to land-use planning in the Front Range Urban Corridor.

Consolidated barriers that could impede vertical flow were found in 30 percent of the area.

Rainfall over all of south Florida during the 1970 wet season and the 1970-71 dry season was less than 85 percent of normal, as was the 1971 wet season on the heavily populated southeast coast of Florida. Rainfall during the dry season ranged from 20 to 63 percent of normal and recurrence intervals for dry season rainfall of this magnitude ranged from 100 years to several hundred years.
Canal flow and ground-water levels reflected the drought conditions but in most cases did not set record lows. No permanent undesirable effects occurred as a result of the drought.

(44.5 square miles) is about 8,800 tons, or 200 tons per square mile. Annual yields within the basin, which is in the Piedmont Lowlands section of the Piedmont physiographic province in west-central New Jersey, range from 25 to 400 tons per square mile. Storm runoff that transports suspended materials in excess of a ton carries 90 percent of the total suspended-sediment discharge from the basin. Observations of particlesize distributions indicate that the suspended material carried during storms is 55 percent silt, 40 percent clay, and 5 percent sand. \r\n\r\nA trend analysis of sediment records collected at Princeton between 1956 and 1970 indicated an increase in suspended-sediment discharge per unit of water discharge during 1956-61. From early 1962 to late 1967, sediment trends were difficult to interpret owing to complicating factors, such as reservoir construction, urbanization, and extreme drought. After 1967, yields decreased. \r\n\r\nVariations in sediment yields during the study are attributed to the integrated influence of several factors. A 2.9 percent decrease in croplands and an increase of 5.1 percent in idle and urban land use probably produced a net increase in sediment yields. Construction of seven sediment-retention reservoirs under Public Law 566 resulted in temporary increases in sediment yields. However, based on a trap-efficiency investigation at 1 site, the combined effect of operation of these 7 reservoirs is estimated to result in a 20 percent reduction in sediment discharge from the basin. Other factors that influence the noted decrease include reduction in yields during 5 years of drought, 1962-66, and reduced construction and development during the latter part of the study period resulting from a general economic slowdown.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt.
