The volume of ground water in storage in 1970 was about 86,000 acre-feet (106 cubic hectometres).</p><p>The digital-model analysis included building and verifying a steady-state and a non-steady-state model. The steady-state model was considered to be verified when the model-generated water levels approximated the measured 1949 water levels, which were assumed to represent steady-state water-level conditions. The non-steady-state model was verified for 1949-70, and the model satisfactorily reproduced the measured water-level changes for the study area during that period. Water-level changes in the ground-water basin were predicted from 1971 to 1980 using as representative average annual pumpage that from 1966 to 1970 and 1971. The model also predicted water-level changes from 1971 to 1980 using the maximum pumpage capacities of the wells under recharge conditions for average, wet, and dry periods.</p><p>The predicted water-level changes in the Oak Glen study area were used to calculate the average costs of pumping water for 1980. The comparable average costs of importing water from an alternative supply and the capital costs of well construction were also determined. The type of rock that forms the pluton(?) is unknown. A small volcanic pipe, possibly a diatreme, is at the southeast end of the high. The pipe, about 92 m (300 ft) in diameter, consists of a rubbly basalt-like matrix through which are scattered xenoliths of Precambrian crystalline rocks and of various Paleozoic and Mesozoic strata. It is uncertain whether the juxtaposition of the pipe and the magnetic high is meaningful or is merely fortuitous. Although no mineralized rock was found in the area underlain by the anomaly, placer gold has been found nearby. Some 113 km (70 mi) to the west, in Custer and Lemhi Counties, Idaho, a similar northeast-trending magnetic high marks the site of the Gilmore mining district. S. Geological Survey (USGS), under the sponsorship of the Government of Liberia and the Agency for International Development, U. S. Department of State, Liberia was mapped by geologic and geophysical methods during the period 1965 to 1972. The resulting geologic and geophysical maps are published in ten folios, each covering one quadrangle (see index map). The first systematic mapping in the Harper quadrangle was by Baker, S. P. Srivastava, and W. E. Stewart (LGS) at a scale of 1:500,000 in the vicinity of Harper in the southeastern, and of Karloke in the northeastern part of the quadrangle in 1960-61. Brock and Chidester carried out systematic mapping of the quadrangle at a scale of 1:250,000 in the period September 1971-May 1972; the geologic map was compiled from field data gathered by project geologists and private companies as indicated in the source diagram, photogeologic maps, interpretation of airborne magnetic and radiometric surveys, field mapping, and ground-based radiometric surveys in which hand-held scintillators were used. R. W. Bromery, C. S. Wotorson, and J. C. Behrendt contributed to the interpretation of geophysical data.
