Presently, its shoreline is being developed for summer homes. Surface water constituted more than 90 percent of the approximately 50,000 acre-foot (62-cubic hectometre) inflow to Lake Shastina in the 1972 water year. Controlled outflow is via the Montague Main Canal; however, leakage from the lake through volcanic rocks to the northwest was estimated to be greater than the measured outflow. Appreciable annual changes in the quantity of water in storage in the lake are related mainly to variations in annual inflow.</p><p>From June through August the lake was thermally stratified. In the spring and summer the epilimnion was often supersaturated with oxygen, while at the same time the hypolimnion was undersaturated and 'often devoid of dissolved oxygen. Vertical stratification of carbon dioxide, carbonate, bicarbonate, hydrogen ion, nitrogen, and phosphorus was also recorded during the spring and summer. Orthophosphate, total phosphorus, and total nitrogen concentrations (organic, ammonium, and nitrate) were highest in the hypolimnion during the period of thermal stratification.</p><p>Ten-inch (25-centimetre) core samples from the reservoir bottom were chemically analyzed at 0.8-inch (2-centimetre) intervals. The concentrations ranged from 6.3 to 28.9 milligrams per gram of iron, 0.07 to 0.43 milligrams per gram of manganese, 0.4 to 2.7 milligrams per gram of organic nitrogen plus ammonium, and 0.06 to 1.3 milligrams per gram of total phosphorus. Organic matter in the cores ranged from 4 to 14 percent.</p><p>Green algae and diatoms were the dominant algal types, reaching maximum concentrations of about 7 and 30 million cells per litre, respectively. These phytoplankton occurred near the surface during thermally stratified periods, but were distributed at greater depths during nonthermally stratified periods. Blue-green algae were present only in the spring samples, and reached a maximum concentration of about 5 million cells per litre.</p><p>Zooplankton numbers were greatest in March, July, and September, with lesser concentrations in June. Three major zooplankton groups, Cladocera, Copepoda, and Rotifera, were present. Individual ore bodies may be as much as 100 feet thick and extend laterally for many hundreds of feet. The cluster of ore bodies making up the Cliffs Shaft deposit has an overall length of about 4,500 feet from east to west parallel to the axis of the syncliorium and a width of 1,500 feet from north to south. Scheelite ore reserves, located principally in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, are estimated to be as high as 8,300,000 tons (9,100,000 short tons) containing 0.7 percent WO3. \r\n\r\nMinor deposits (or those about which only minimal information is available) of wolframite, with which some cassiterite is associated, are located in Sao Paulo, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul. Upstream from the Massachusetts State line the Hoosic River drains a total of 205 mi<sup>2</sup> (531 km<sup>2</sup>) of which 164 mi<sup>2</sup> (425 km<sup>2</sup>) are in Massachusetts, 29 mi<sup>2</sup> (101 km<sup>2</sup>) are in Vermont, and 2 mi<sup>2</sup> (5 km<sup>2</sup>) are in New York. This report contains hydrologic data for that part inside Massachusetts and includes all, or parts of, the towns of Adams, Cheshire, Clarksburg, Dalton, Florida, Hancock, Lanesborough, New Ashford, North Adams, Savoy, Williamstown, and Windsor.</p><p>The data tabulated here were collected during an investigation of the water resources of the Hoosic River basin in Massachusetts by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Massachusetts Water Resources Commission. This report is released to make available to the public basic hydrologic and related information that will facilitate the planning of water-resources development and complements an interpretive report of the area (Hansen and others, 1973).</p><p>Data presented include selected information on wells, test borings, springs, seismic surveys, streamflow records, chemical analyses of surface and ground water and of rainfall, and suspended-sediment concentrations of surface water. The lenses are as much as 8 meters thick and 400 meters long. The phosphate rock is folded and faulted and is overlain by flat-lying rocks of Cretaceous age.</p><p>The phosphate mineral is a carbonate fluorapatite, but only a small amount of C0<sub>2</sub> substitutes for PO<sub>4</sub>. Crystalline apatite in veinlets is clearly younger than the groundmass apatite, and contains almost no C0<sub>2</sub>. Surficial parts of the phosphate lenses have been altered to a rock characterized by aluminum phosphate.</p><p>Samples of the green mudstone contain muscovite-illite, quartz, and what is believed to be glauconite. Samples collected adjacent to the phosphate lenses also contain veinlets of apatite or wavellite.</p><p>Chemical analyses of the phosphate rock show that it contains from 16 to 35 percent P<sub>2</sub>0<sub>5</sub>, and all samples are deficient in Ca0 relative to P<sub>2</sub>0<sub>5</sub>, indicating that some of the phosphate in all samples is combined with alumina. The samples contain as much as 8 percent K<sub>2</sub>0 in the minerals muscovite-illite or glauconite.</p><p>All the samples collected are extremely fine grained. When the inevitable deviations from perfect linearity occur, one must then find the straight line course that best approximates the actual observation path. Classical least squares (regression) does not solve this problem, because the line thus fitted depends upon which coordinate is taken as the dependent variable.</p><p>A coordinate-free solution is obtained by minimizing the sum of squares of normal distances between the line and the observation points. As in classical least squares, the line of best fit passes through the geometrical centroid of the observation points. The slope of this line, however, is closer to 1.0 than the slope of the classical regression line. In October 1966, the President’s Water Resources Council requested that a comprehensive framework study be made in the Great Basin Region under the leadership of the Pacific Southwest Interagency Committee. The study, which included evaluation of the water resources of the region and guidelines for future study and development, was completed June 30, 1971. Results of the study received limited distribution.</p><p>The purpose of this atlas is to make available to the public the hydrologic data (including a general appraisal) that were compiled for the comprehensive framework study. Most of the work was done by a water-resources work group consisting of members from several Federal and State agencies under the chairmanship of Thomas E. Eakin of the U.S. Geological Survey. This atlas contains some data not included in the framework study.</p><p>The data presented herein are reconnaissance in nature and should be used with discretion. The maps are highly generalized and are intended only to illustrate the regional distribution of the supply and general chemical quality of the water. Two saline water-bearing zones occur within the depth interval 400 to 1,200 feet (120 to 370 metres); the upper zone is termed the lower Hawthorn aquifer and the lower zone is termed the Suwannee aquifer. Fresh water infiltrates into the aquifers in the central highlands region of Florida where water levels are as much as 130 feet (40 metres) above sea level. The water subsequently moves southwestward into the report area becoming progressively more saline toward the coast.</p><p>Both aquifers are under sufficient artesian pressure to cause wells tapping them to flow at land surface. Water levels range from more than 50 feet (15 metres) above sea level in the northeastern part of the county to about 30 feet (9 metres) or less along the coast. Artesian pressure in the aquifers has been reduced along the Caloosahatchee River by heavy withdrawal and this reduction in pressure is a major factor in deterioration of water quality in the McGregor Isles area, south of Fort Myers.</p><p>The average depth of wells tapping the lower Hawthorn aquifer is 572 feet (174 metres); the average depth of wells tapping both the lower Hawthorn and Suwannee aquifers is 858 feet (262 metres). Few wells tap only the Suwannee aquifer. The average length of casing in wells tapping the lower Hawthorn aquifer is 170 feet (52 metres), whereas the average length in wells tapping both aquifers is only 179 feet (55 metres). Flow rates range from 20 to 750 gallons per minute (1 to 47 litres per second) and average 233 gallons per minute (15 litres per second).</p><p>The saline water from the lower Hawthorn and Suwannee aquifers is hard and sulfurous. The dissolved solids, as determined from analyses of 31 samples,ranged from 700 to 3,300 mg/1 (milligrams per litre) and averaged 1,936 mg/1. The chloride concentrations ranged from 160 to 1,600 mg/1 and averaged 869 mg/l. The calcium magnesium hardness ranged from 110 to 1,000 mg/1 and averaged 625 mg/l. Sulfate concentrations ranged from 92 to 800 mg/1 and averaged 289 mg/l.</p><p>Although the mineral content is high, water from the lower Hawthorn and Suwannee aquifers has been used in the past for many purposes, particularly for irrigation. S. Geological Survey (USGS) first began work in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1950 under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Finance and National Economy. The basic objective of the work was to investigate the mineral and water resource potential in western Saudi Arabia, but little was known of the region and it therefore was necessary to prepare geographic and geologic maps. Aerial photographs were taken and controlled mosaics produced, some paid for by the USGS but most paid for by the Saudi Arabian government, and reconnaissance geologic mapping was undertaken until the USGS team left Saudi Arabia in 1955. This mapping, in cooperation with mapping of the Arabian American Oil Company, was compiled as a series of scale 1:500,000 geographic and geologic maps in Arabic and English covering all of Saudi Arabia. A total of 42 of these maps were prepared. Three scale 1:2,000,000 geographic and geologic maps in Arabic and English, covering the Arabian Peninsula, also were prepared from this work. All of the maps were printed in the United States and published by the USGS, the last in 1963.</p><p>Other work done by the USGS between 1950 and 1955 included locating and examining ancient mines, indentifying the Wadi Fatima oolitic iron deposit and other iron deposits in northwest Saudi Arabia, and advising on many water supply problems including those for Riyadh, Qizan, Qunfudhah, Rabigh, Yenbo, Umm Lejh, and Al Wajh.
