This brackish water has been identified as the source of the water that contaminates the upper and lower fresh-water-bearing zones of the principal artesian aquifer. The confining unit separating the fresh and brackish water seems to contain breaks that act as vertical conduits for the movement of brackish water into the fresh-water zones of the aquifer. Faults are suspected to be responsible for the breaks in the confining unit. The rate of upward movement of brackish water seems to be a function of the rate of water-level decline in the aquifer. \r\n\r\nThere are two main areas of brackish-water intrusion. One area is near Bay and Prince Streets, and the other area is near Reynolds and Q Streets. Successive maps showing chloride ion concentration trace the movement of the chloride front northward in the Bay Street area at the rate of about 350 feet per year toward the center of pumping. An average of about 400 gallons per minute of water containing 2,000 milligrams per liter chloride invaded the upper water-bearing zone between December 1962 and December 1966. A like amount may have entered the lower water-bearing zone. Maximum chloride concentration in the upper water-bearing zone is 1,540 milligrams per liter in the Bay Street area and 640 milligrams per liter in the Reynolds Street area. \r\n\r\nIn a few areas, where individual wells have been drilled deep enough to penetrate the confining unit over the brackish-water zone, the well furnishes a conduit for brackish water to recharge the fresh-water aquifer. Plugging the lower part of these wells usually reduces the chloride concentration of the water.\r\n\r\nThe chloride concentration of water in the principal artesian aquifer can probably be reduced by use of interceptor wells, relief wells, or well-field spacing. Interceptor wells would prevent laterally moving brackish water from contaminating a well field. A relief well would tap and withdraw poor quality water from only the brackish-water zone to lower the head in that zone and decrease the rate of leakage into the fresh-water aquifer. Wider spacing of wells would prevent the development of a deep cone of depression and the steeper hydraulic gradients that accompany it. The brackish water pumped by the interceptor or relief wells could be used for industry, aquaculture, recreation, or for other processes in which the chloride content is not critical.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Commercial iron deposits, now mostly concentrating-grade ore, are in the Negaunee Iron-formation, which is part of a thick sequence of metasedimentary rocks of Precambrian X age. These rocks are preserved in the west-trending Marquette synclinorium, and are flanked to the north and south by older Precambrian W crystalline rocks (fig. 1). The Greenwood quadrangle includes part of· the central Marquette Range and part of the Precambrian W rocks south of the range. Most occur on the flanks of basins, along Basin and Range (late Miocene to Holocene) faults, while some occur in the inner parts of the basins. Surface temperatures of the springs range from slightly above ambient to, boiling; some springs are superheated. Maximum subsurface water temperatures calculated on the basis of quartz solubility range as high as 252?C, although most are below 190?C. Flows range from a trickle to several hundred liters per minute. \r\n\r\nThe Nevada geothermal systems differ markedly from the power-producing system at The Geysers, Calif., and from those areas with a high potential, for power production (e.g., Yellowstone Park, Wyo.; Jemez Mountains, N. Mex.). These other systems are associated with Quaternary felsic volcanic rocks and probably derive their heat from cooling magma rather high in the crust. In northern Nevada, however, felsic volcanic rocks are virtually all older than 10 million years, and. analogous magmatic heat sources are, therefore, probably lacking. \r\n\r\nNevada is part of an area of much higher average heat flow than the rest of the United States. In north-central Nevada, geothermal gradients are as great as 64?C per kilometer in bedrock and even higher in basin fill. Fresh water, which is defined as containing 250 milligrams per liter chloride or less, in the Chicot aquifer is characteristically hard and high in iron concentration; in this area the hardness is generally 200-300 milligrams per liter. The soft-water zone, containing water with a hardness of less than 60 milligrams per liter, is anomalous and occurs in an area where the basal part of the aquifer is separated from the main body of the aquifer by a thick clay layer. The zone has been mapped in parts of St. Martin and adjoining Lafayette Parishes.\r\n\r\nAlthough the exact areal extent of the zone cannot be determined with available data, it appears to be sufficiently large that the soft water should prove to be an important asset to the area. The water could be used by itself or mixed with either hard or slightly salty water (more than 250 milligrams per liter chloride) to provide a blend that would require little or no treatment for most purposes. Because of the proximity of salty water in much of the area, careful planning and monitoring will be necessary to maintain the soft-water zone as a dependable supply of usable water. Property damage exceeded $60 million, and 16 lives were lost. At many sites, peak discharges exceeded by severalfold the discharges that may be expected, on the average, once in 50 years; yet, the 1965 discharges could be exceeded in the near future. \r\n\r\nHeavy rainfall of more than 12 inches in several areas and more than 18 inches near Two Buttes, Colo., caused severe flooding in the Arkansas River basin in Colorado and Kansas and the Canadian River basin in New Mexico. Snowmelt runoff added only token amounts to the flood peaks. The 1965 peak discharges along the main stem of the Arkansas River in Colorado were less than those in 1921, but tributary peaks were probably greater at many sites In New Mexico the peak discharges exceeded those for the destructive floods of 1904 at some locations, by manyfold at some sites. \r\n\r\nDescriptions of the storms and floods, detailed streamflow records, and information on \r\ndamages and flood frequency are included in this report. Comparisons of the magnitude of the floods are made, and all indicate that an outstanding hydrologic event occurred.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Print.
