Lead-zinc-silver replacement veins constitute most of the deposits. The geometry of the district has been modified by post-ore faulting along the Osburn, Dobson Pass, and other faults. The original position of the Gem stocks, before their separation from the Dago Peak stocks by the Dobson Pass fault, can be approximately reconstructed by moving the truncated stocks and associated geochemical dispersion patterns back into matching positions. The known mineral belts are defined by dispersion patterns of both lead and the lead:zinc ratio. All three basins are underlain by the Biscayne aquifer. They are, Snapper Creek Canal basin, where the Biscayne aquifer is of high permeability; the Snake Creek Canal basin, where the aquifer is of moderate permeability; and the Pompano-Cypress Canal basin, where the aquifer is of low permeability. In each basin, drainage is a function of permeability; thus, where the permeability of the aquifer is high, drainage is excellent. The coastal water-conrol structures are intended to afford flood protection in the three basins. In general the control operation criteria for flood control in newly developing areas in southeastern Florida do not provide adequate protection from flooding because of the time required for the aquifer to respond to changes in the controls. Adequate protection would require increasing the density of secondary drainage canals, but this could achieved only by reducing the quantity of water available for recharging those segments of the Biscayne aquifer adjacent to the canals. Flooding of Butte Basin from the Sacramento River will occur whenever flow in the main channel at Butte City exceeds 90,000 cubic feet per second (2550 cubic metres per second), a discharge with a recurrence interval of about 3 years. The distribution of floodflow across the basin is not uniform. During the flood of January 24, 1970, 84 percent of the total discharge resulted from overland flow from the Sacramento River and 16 percent from flooding on Butte Creek. \r\n\r\nWhen flooding in Butte Basin is severe enough to affect State Highway 162, overflow across the road first occurs between bridges 11-21 and 11-22. The construction of bridges or culverts at two locations between bridges 11-21 and 11-22 would increase the period of time that the road is usable. \r\n\r\nAnalysis of the present roadway, bridge geometry, and ground elevations adjacent to the roadway indicates that backwater is less than 0.6 foot (0.2 metre) for flows of the magnitude experienced during the flood of January 24, 1970. The concurrent maximum velocity of flow at the bridges is 6.8 feet per second (2.1 metres per second). Part of the backwater is caused by ground elevations adjacent to the roadway that are, at many locations, higher than the road crown. \r\n\r\nIf the roadway embankment were raised to prevent overtopping by a flood equivalent to that of January 24, 1970, without increasing the capacity or number of the bridges, backwater greater than 0.5 foot (0.2 metre) would result upstream from 6 of the 15 bridges on State Highway 162, and velocities would be excessive. Additional bridge openings to discharge a total of 37,800 cubic feet per second (1070 cubic metres per second) would be required for at least six locations if backwater and velocity were to be kept to levels similar to those observed for present conditions. \r\n\r\nDuring the flood of November 12, 1973, water-surface elevations recorded in several of the overflow channels of Butte Creek were higher than those observed during the January 1970 flood even though the discharge was less. For convenience there are also included records for a few pertinent gaging stations in bordering States. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey, under the direction of T.R. Cummings, district chief. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Michigan. </p><p>Records of discharge and stage of streams, and contents and stage of lakes or reservoirs are published in a series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled \"Surface Water Supply of the United States\". Through September 30, 1960, these water-supply papers were in an annual series and since then are in a 5-year series. Since 1951 there have been 20 volumes in the series; each volume covered an area whose boundaries coincided with those of certain natural drainage areas. The records in Michigan are contained in Part 4 of that series. </p><p>Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. In such an area careful selection of building sites and foundations is imperative. This geologic investigation of the San Francisco North quadrangle was carried out to obtain basic geologic data to aid in construction and other civil engineering problems. The study also contributes to a better understanding of the geology of this part of the Coast Ranges in general and of the Franciscan Formation and surficial deposits in particular.</p><p>On the geologic map (pl. 1) , consolidated rocks are delineated by their composition, age, and origin. Such a classification also gives an approximate indication of the engineering properties of each formation. To make the map more useful to the civil engineer, unconsolidated deposits are shown where thick enough to be depicted.
