Intense rainfall, resulting mostly from severe thunderstorms in August and September 1971 caused considerable flooding throughout much of Maryland and Delaware. Precipitation totals of 5.47 inches in 3 hours and 12.6 inches in 12 hours were reported for the most severe storm of the period which occurred on Aug. 1-2, and was centered in southeast Baltimore County, Md.

Total storm damage for the 2 months was estimated to exceed 10 million dollars. Fourteen lives were lost and extensive damage was done to homes, businesses, crops, bridges, culverts, and roadways.

Flood discharge data are presented for 75 gaging stations and for 6 miscellaneous sites. New peaks of record occurred at 32 of the gaging stations. The maximum unit peak discharge rate recorded was 2,400 cubic fee t per second per square mile.

As part of a program undertaken cooperatively by the Liberian Geological Survey (LGS) and the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS), under the sponsorship of the Government of Liberia and the Agency for Inter-national Development, U. S. Department of State, Liberia was mapped by geologic and geophysical methods during the period 1965 to 1972. The resulting geologic and geophysical maps are published in ten folios, each covering one quadrangle (see index map). Systematic map synthesis by Force began in 1971 and included field data as shown on figure 1. Observations but not interpretations made by Offerberg and Tremaine (1961) were incorporated in the mapping. The area compiled by Berge (fig. 1) is the LAMCO (Liberian American-Swedish Minerals Co.) Nimba Concession Area. Mapping has been done by company geologists since 1955 and summarized by Berge (1966, 1968, 1973, 1974). Detailed mapping has been done in many areas underlain by iron deposits, but the concession area as a whole has been mapped only by reconnaissance methods. For both compilers, photogeologic mapping and the interpretation of air-borne magnetic and radiometric surveys (Behrendt and Wotorson, 1974, a and b) are integral to the interpretation as shown.

Water resources data for the 1973 water year for Washington include records of data for the chemical and physical characteristics of surface water. Data on the quality of surface water (chemical, temperature, and sediment) were collected from designated sampling sites at predetermined intervals such as once daily, weekly, monthly or less frequently. Records are given for 363 sampling stations of which 181 are continuous record stations and 182 are partial-record stations. Locations of the continuous-record sampling stations are shown in figure 1. A few pertinent stations (not included above) in bordering States are also included. The records were collected by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey under the direction of L. B. Laird, district chief. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Washington.

At each of five sites in Dade County, where individual (residence) septic tanks have been in operation for at least 15 years and where septic tank concentration is less than 5 per acre, a drainfield site was selected for investigation to determine the effects of septic tank effluent on the quality of the water in the Biscayne Aquifer.

\n

At each site two sets of multiple depth wells were drilled. The upgradient wells adjacent to the drainfields in most places, were constructed in such a way that the aquifer could be sampled at 10, 20, 30, 40, and 60 feet below land surface. The down-gradient wells at each site are 35 feet or more from the up-gradient wells in the direction of ground-water flow, and allow. the aquifer to be sampled at various depths.

\n

Except at one site, no fecal coliforms were found below the 10-foot depth. Total coliforms exceeded a count of one colony per ml at the 60- foot depth at two sites. At one site a fecal streptococci count of 53 colonies per ml was found at the 60-foot depth and at another a count of seven colonies was found at the 40-foot depth. The three types of bacteria occur in higher concentration in the northern areas of the county than in the south. Bacteria concentrations were also higher where the septic tanks were more concentrated.

This report describes the physical environment, availability, distribution, movement, quality, and use of water in the upper Wisconsin River basin as an aid in planning and water management. The report presents general information on the basin derived from data obtained from Federal, State, and local agencies, New field data were collected in areas where information was lacking. More detailed studies of problem areas may be required in the future, as water needs and related development increase.

\n

The upper Wisconsin River basin is the headwaters of the Wisconsin River drainage and includes about 2,730 square miles in northern Wisconsin (upstream from the gage on the Wisconsin River at Merrill). An additional 50 square miles of the basin lies in Michigan and is not covered by this report. The report area includes parts of Forest, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Oneida, Price, Taylor, and Vilas Counties,

Many organizations and persons assisted the study by providing data. Among the contributors were the University of Wisconsin-Extension, Geological and Natural History Survey, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin, and the Wisconsin Valley Improvement Company, Municipal water officials furnished water-supply information and well records, Many individuals allowed access to their wells for water-level measurements and collection of water samples for chemical analysis.

To determine what measures are required to provide a better quality mine-water discharge in the Wyoming Valley, mine hydrology and mine-water quality are related to mine-pool management. The addition of mine-pool outlets at several locations would increase the rate of discharge and reduce interpool flow, which would reduce the total mineral load discharged to the river. Most U.S. Bureau of Mines reports on the geology and mineral resources of Alaska that were published or placed in open files through April 30, 1974, are listed by the quadrangles (scale 1:250,000) into which Alaska has been divided for topographic mapping (p. 2). References to reports that deal with Alaska as a whole and cannot be readily assigned to individual quadrangles or deal with many scattered parts of the state are listed under ALASKA - GENERAL, which appears before the alphabetically arranged quadrangle listings.

References to the Minerals Yearbook, published annually, are not included as this periodical contains mainly statistical data. Also omitted are reports on mining, milling, and metallurgical practices; compilations of coal, oil, and gas analyses unless data on geological occurrences are also given; and reports on permissible explosives, health, and safety.

This index is the second in a planned series of specialized lists, arranged by quadrangle, that will facilitate library research on the geology and mineral resources of Alaska. The first in the series is \"Geological Survey open-file reports on Alaska indexed by quadrangle,\" by Edward H. Cobb, which was released as open-file report 74-7 on May 16, 1974.
