Bar graphs express the way each characteristic varies with crater size. The features are grouped as crater structure, ejecta, and downhill flow features. Major structural transition occur at diameters of about 15 and 200 km. Details of the ejecta blanket, which include several kinds of lineations, dunelike ridges, troughs, and lobes, reflect different transport regimes in the ejecta. Identical melanges occur to the west, separating well-bedded, coherent Franciscan units that differ markedly in age. Detailed studies in several places indicate that these melanges mark the boundaries of imbricate thrust sheets, and they appear to occur at several discrete structural horizons.</p><p>The melange comprises blocks of graywacke, greenstone, chert, serpentinite, and isolated so-called knockers of high-grade blueschist and eclogite set in a matrix of sheared and quartz-veined mudstone and minor sandstone. Except for the blocks of high-grade schist, these rocks are similar to, but more deformed than, the orderly sedimentary, volcanic, and other rocks that occur immediately above the Coast Range thrust at the base of the Great Valley Sequence. Unlike the other Franciscan units, the melanges contain relatively abundant fossils, mainly<span>&nbsp;</span><i>Buchia,</i><span>&nbsp;</span>radiolarians, and dinoflagellates. Significantly, all of these fossils are of Tithonian to Valanginian age.</p><p>We suggest, on the basis of similarity of lithology and fossil content, that the matrix of the melanges represents a distal, or seaward, portion of the basal sediments of the Great Valley Sequence and that the abundant greenstone, chert, and serpentinite found as tectonic blocks within the melanges were derived from the underlying oceanic crust and upper mantle.</p><p>Formation of the melanges must be related to multiple subduction of separate plates, the melange beinggenerated repeatedly from the ultramafic-mafic-chert and<span>&nbsp;</span><i>Buchia-hearing</i><span>&nbsp;</span>shale and minor graywacke sequence that constitutes the oldest rocks of the Coast Ranges. This process of subduction probably began in the Early Cretaceous and continued into the Tertiary, as Eocene fossils have been found recently in deformed Franciscan (coastal belt) rocks structurally below the melanges.</p><p>The tectonic blocks of high-grade blueschist and eclogite were formed during an earlier period of subduction, then embedded in serpentinite and carried westward by flow in the upper mantle. In the year following the detonation, this deformation reversed such that the final configuration represented a small east-west contraction from the pre-HANDLEY state. In the subsequent 2-year period, only minor deformation was detected. Thus, the overall response of Pahute Mesa may be described as stable. The explosion-induced deformation is thought to be partly due to slip on faults driven by the large-amplitude seismic waves from the explosion. Within the precision of measurement, the data are consistent with a linear change in line length with time. Earthquake-related changes in tilt have been simultaneously observed on up to four independent instruments. At earthquake distances greater than 10 earthquake source dimensions, there are few clear indications of tilt change. For the four instruments with the longest records (>10 months), 26 earthquakes have occurred since July 1973 with at least one instrument closer than 10 source dimensions and 8 earthquakes with more than one instrument within that distance. During Late Triassic time, large fault basins formed within the Gulf of Maine and probably beneath Georges Bank. The fault basins and a possible major northeast-trending fault zone beneath the northern part of the bank probably formed as a result of the opening Atlantic during the Mesozoic. Nonmarine sediments, associated with mafic flows and intrusive rocks, were deposited in the fault basins as they formed. The upper surface of the Triassic and pre-Triassic rocks that comprise basement is an unconformity that makes up much of the bottom of the Gulf of Maine. Depth to the basement surface beneath the gulf differ greatly because of fluvial erosion in Tertiary time and glacial erosion in Pleistocene time. Beneath the northern part of Georges Bank the basement surface is smoother and slopes southward. Prominent valleys, cut before Late Cretaceous time, are present beneath this part of the bank.</p><p>Cretaceous, Tertiary, and possibly Jurassic times were characterized by episodes of coastal-plain deposition and fluvial erosion. During this time a very thick wedge of sediment, mostly of Jurassic(?) and Cretaceous ages, was deposited on the shelf. Major periods of erosion took place at the close of the Cretaceous and during the Pliocene. Fluvial erosion during the Pliocene removed much of the coastal-plain sedimentary wedge and formed the Gulf of Maine.</p><p>Pleistocene glaciers eroded all but a few remnants of the coastal-plain sediments within the gulf and deposited a thick section of drift against the north slope of Georges Bank and a thin veneer of outwash on the bank. In eight of the treated birds killed at that time, whole-body DDE residues averaged 33.1 ppm (wet weight). The other eight treated birds and ten controls were kept through the winter with no additional DDE exposure and penned separately five days for individual egg collection about three weeks after laying began in spring. At that time (nearly 11 months after DDE feeding had stopped), the treated birds laid eggs with shells averaging 7.4% thinner than control eggshells (significant at P≤0.05) and their whole-body DDE residues averaged 9.6 ppm (wet weight). Variations in eggshell thickness and DDE residues were considerable among treated birds. These offset plutons place severe constraints on the amount and rate of movement along the McKinley segment since the beginning of the Oligocene Epoch. The 38-km displacement indicates an average rate of 0.1 cm/yr if movement began immediately after crystallization in early Oligocene time or an average rate of 0.4 cm/yr if movement began 10 m.y. ago in late Miocene time. The plumes sink to the bottom of the aquifer, which is 70 ft (21 m) below the water table at the 27-year old site and 170 ft (52 m) below at the 41-year old site. Conditions for the satisfactory isolation and concentration of the selenium are investigated and tested on six USGS standard rocks of various types. Selenium contents of samples treated by an alkaline sinter and leach are compared with those obtained by acid decomposition and with published values determined by neutron-activation analyses. In pure solutions, 0.01 &mu;g of selenium can be determined with a relative standard deviation of 25 percent, thus setting the determination limit at approximately 0.01 ppm Se in a 1.0-g sample. He wrote that no known intermediate forms, fossil or living, bridge the \"enormous gaps between any two of the three lineages,\" and therefore treated each as a separate subphylum. These subphyla are (i) the subphylum Aculifera Hatscheck 1891, containing only the class Aplacophora, derived from the most primitive ancestors of the Mollusca; (ii) the subphylum Placophora von Jhering 1876, containing only the class Polyplacophora, and emphasizing the pseudometamerism of its more advanced premollusk ancestor; and (iii) the subphylum Conchifera Gegenbaur 1878, containing the Monoplacophora and the other classes derived from it.</span></p><p><span>We point out that the Polyplacophora may be derived from the Monoplacophora instead of a more primitive ancestral stock. We also suggest that the Conchifera can be separated into two major lineages, each worthy of the rank of subphylum. The fossil record indicates that the Monoplacophora gave rise to the Gastropoda, Cephalopoda, Rostroconchia, and possibly Polyplacophora, and that the Pelecypoda and Scaphopoda are derived from the Rostroconchia. These last three classes thus form a lineage that diverged from the Monoplacophora in the Early Cambrian. They emphasized a shell form that in all groups is primitively open at both ends, allowing the gut to remain relatively straight, with an anterior mouth and posterior anus. They became burrowing (infaunal) deposit or filter feeders. We coin the term Diasoma (through-body) for the subphylum containing these three classes (Rostroconchia, Pelecypoda, and Scaphopoda). The remaining three classes (Monoplacophora, Gastropoda, and Cephalopoda) emphasize a conical univalved shell, usually twisted into a spiral. The relatively small single aperture forces the anus to lie close to the mouth, and the gut is bent into a \"U.\" Most are surface-dwelling (epifaunal) grazers or carnivores. We coin the name&nbsp;<i>Cyrtosoma</i>&nbsp;(hunchback-body) for the subphylum containing these three classes.
