The basic assumptions inherent in the methods are seldom stipulated. These assumptions include (1) a temperature-dependent reaction at depth, (2) a supply of the solid phase involved in the reaction to permit saturation of the constituent used for geothermometry, (3) water-rock equilibrium at depth, (4) negligible re-equilibration as the water flows to the surface, and (5) no dilution or mixing of hot and cold water. The first three assumptions are probably good for a few reactions that occur in many places. The last two assumptions probably are not valid for many hot-spring systems; information obtained is therefore for the shallower parts of those systems, or a limiting temperature (generally a minimum) is indicated.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Fournier, R., White, D., and Truesdell, A.H., 1974, Geochemical indicators of subsurface temperature: Part 1, basic assumptions: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 2, no. 3, p. 259-262.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"259","endPage":"262","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":402830,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":402829,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1974/vol2issue3/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"volume":"2","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fournier, R.O.","contributorId":73584,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fournier","given":"R.O.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":845542,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"White, D. The first group is observed at low dosages of activated carbon, contains the bulk of the total MBAS, and is readily adsorbable. The second is noted at intermediate dosages, contains a small part of the total, and is poorly adsorbable. The third occurs at very high dosages, contains a small part, and is essentially nonadsorbable. Parameters showing the higher levels of significance were temperature, hardness of water, percentage of gravel bottom, percentage of bottom vegetation, variability of streamflow, and discharge per unit drainage area. Trout populations increase with lower levels of annual maximum water temperatures, with increase in water hardness, and with increase in percentage of gravel and bottom vegetation. Trout populations also increase with decrease in variability of streamflow, and with increase in discharge per unit drainage area. Most hydrologic parameters were significant when evaluated collectively, but no parameter, by itself, showed a high degree of correlation with trout populations in regression analyses that included all the streams sampled. Regression analyses of stream segments that were restricted to certain limits of hardness, temperature, or percentage of gravel bottom showed improvements in correlation. Analyses of trout populations, in pounds per acre and pounds per mile and hydrologic parameters resulted in regression equations from which trout populations could be estimated with standard errors of 89 and 84 per cent, respectively.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters","publisherLocation":"Madison, WI","usgsCitation":"Hendrickson, G.E., and Known predation loss was 7.6 and 12.0 percent for mallards and wood ducks respectively, 60 percent occurred within 3 weeks of instrumentation. The highest predation rate for mallards was 0.0048 kills per tracking day and 0.0136 for wood ducks. A higher direct recovery rate for instrumented birds (19.5 percent) than noninstrumented birds (8.1 percent) was probably due to the novelty of the transmitter to hunters. Departure patterns and locations of direct recoveries were similar between radio-equipped and normal-banded birds. Among female wood ducks with radios, recovery rates were lower than expected. Hunters indicated that 84 percent of the instrumented ducks recovered were in good or excellent condition. Recaptures of ducks as long as 1 year after being equipped with radio packages indicated that feather wear and skin abrasion were not serious. A high rate for feeding on land by instrumented mallards was probably due to our ability to more easily locate and observe these birds in cover. Preening rates were higher for instrumented ducks. As the birds became adjusted to the package, preening decreased and feeding on water increased. A model is proposed which allows survival rates and recovery rates to vary with the calendar year, and also allows juveniles to have rates different from adults. In addition to survival rates and recovery rates, the differential vulnerability factors of juveniles relative to adults are estimated. Minimum values of the variances of the estimators are also given. The new procedure is applied to sets of duck and goose data in which reasonably large numbers of adult and juvenile birds were banded. The results are shown to be generally comparable to those procured by other methods, but, in addition, insight into the extent of annual variation is gained. Combining data from adults and juveniles also increases the effective sample size, since the juveniles are assumed to enter the adult age class after surviving their initial year.","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3800735","usgsCitation":"Johnson, D.H., 1974, Estimating survival rates from banding of adult and juvenile birds: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 38, no. 2, p. 290-297, https://doi.org/10.2307/3800735.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"290","endPage":"297","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":134105,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"38","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ce4b07f02db5fc868","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Johnson, Douglas H. 0000-0002-7778-6641","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7778-6641","contributorId":70327,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnson","given":"Douglas","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":311060,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Wetlands less than 2 acres in size were identified on photography taken in May 1971, and emergent vegetation was recorded on purposely overexposed infrared black and white photography from a flight in September 1971. Several vegetation types and species groups were recognizable with the aid of color, color infrared, and black and white infrared photography. Two hundred and fortyeight of these banded birds were recaptured on the same marshes during subsequent trapping operations, and 1,440 were recovered (shot or found dead) during legal hunting seasons, 1955-70. The size of the adult drake pintail population associated with Pel and Kutawagan marshes was estimated to have been approximately 313,600 in July 1956 and 232,800 in July 1957. Estimates of annual survival varied from approximately 60 percent to 85 percent with an average of 73 percent. Between July 1956 and July 1957, approximately 71,100 birds joined the population segment associated with Pel and Kutawagan marshes and 25,400 birds left the population segment for other areas. Indices to harvest pressure were low, varying from 2.26 in 1958 to 3.54 in 1956. Estimates of harvest rates varied from 5.6 percent to 8.8 percent, and kill rates varied from approximately 7.0 to 11.0 percent. The index to harvest pressure was highest in 1956, while survival during the 1956-57 period was the lowest, suggesting the possibility of an inverse relationship between harvest rate and total survival.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3800733","usgsCitation":"Anderson, D., and Sterling, R., 1974, Population dynamics of molting pintail drakes banded in south-central Saskatchewan: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 38, no. 2, p. 266-274, https://doi.org/10.2307/3800733.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"266","endPage":"274","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":194124,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Canada","otherGeospatial":"south-central Saskatchewan","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -108.27515590965263,\n              52.42586875943772\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.27515590965263,\n              50.98361554242763\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.41793131717804,\n              50.98361554242763\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.41793131717804,\n              52.42586875943772\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.27515590965263,\n              52.42586875943772\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"38","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad6e4b07f02db684116","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Anderson, David R.","contributorId":8413,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Anderson","given":"David R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":332857,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sterling, R.T.","contributorId":20848,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sterling","given":"R.T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":332858,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The small amplitude of these anomalies, about 75γ, would be compatible with an oceanic basalt source at a depth of 10 km, and previous seismic refraction studies in this area have shown that layer 2 of the oceanic crust (presumed to be basalt) does indeed lie at approximately that depth.

Palynomorphs in Deep Sea Drilling Project samples of cap-rock material from the Sigsbee Knolls have shown the associated salt to be Jurassic. A crustal model, based on seismic refraction evidence and on new gravity data, suggests that, whereas the salt-dome belt of the southern gulf is underlain by a thick layer with a density of 2.2 g per cm3 (presumed to be halite rock), adjacent deeper areas of the basin seem to lack this low density layer.

In northeastern Mexico, Triassic red beds fill grabens that are correlative with the Newark Group of the Atlantic Coast and suggest that the Gulf of Mexico originated at the time of the initial rifting of the North Atlantic. When the gulf was about half-opened during the Jurassic, oceanic circulation was restricted; and thick deep-basin evaporite deposits, analogous to those found in the Mediterranean Sea by the Deep Sea Drilling Project, were laid down. Further opening established normal salinity and led to the development of salt-free areas of oceanic crust that separated the Sigsbee Escarpment (together with adjacent ridges of offshore Mexico) from the Sigsbee Knolls and salt domes of Cuba.

The subsequent structural evolution of the Gulf of Mexico basin is believed to have been mainly a result of interaction between it and tectonic plates of the Pacific area. After opening of the gulf, subduction began along the Cuban arc, where Atlantic rifting had created a nearly uninterrupted tract of oceanic crust extending from the Pacific between Yucatán and Colombia. Then, folding and gravity sliding associated with Laramide deformation on the west side of the gulf led to salt anticlines that underlie the ridges offshore from Mexico. Except for continued diapirism and subsidence associated with sediment loading, present tectonic activity is confined to the southwestern corner of the gulf, where volcanism and intermediate-focus earthquakes are a distant manifestation of subduction along the Middle America Trench on the Pacific side of Mexico.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1974)85%3C607:TEOTSG%3E2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Moore, G.W., and Del Castillo, L., 1974, Tectonic evolution of the southern Gulf of Mexico: GSA Bulletin, v. 85, no. 4, p. 607-618, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1974)85%3C607:TEOTSG%3E2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"607","endPage":"618","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":419507,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Mexico","otherGeospatial":"Gulf of Mexico","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -97.45840699357132,\n              20.93832815004201\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.45840699357132,\n              17.8318866571838\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.70532521202199,\n              17.8318866571838\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.70532521202199,\n              20.93832815004201\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.45840699357132,\n              20.93832815004201\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"85","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moore, George W.","contributorId":21625,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moore","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":879466,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Del Castillo, Luis","contributorId":317849,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Del Castillo","given":"Luis","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":879467,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Both paleontologic and stratigraphic evidence indicate that some of these rocks are of Late Cretaceous age or older. Regional Bouguer anomalies over the basement terrane exceed +120 mgal, indicating that eastern Panamá is a raised block of oceanic crust. Age relations in the Caribbean region apparently preclude an “Atlantic” or single intra-Caribbean origin for eastern Panamá and the southern Caribbean basin, but multiple intra-Caribbean origins of the basaltic basement rocks are permitted by the age data. The general pattern of the atmospheric circulation in the upper tropospheric/lower stratospheric region is displayed in the pictures. Atmospheric flow is symmetrical between north and south hemispheres. The equatorial motions are zonal (east-west) at approximately 100 meters per second, consistent with the previously inferred 4-day retrograde rotation. Angular velocity increases with latitude. The subsolar region, and the region downwind from it, show evidence of large-scale convection that persists in spite of the main zonal motion. Dynamical interaction between the zonal motion and the relatively stationary region of convection is evidenced by bowlike waves.","language":"English","publisher":"American Association for the Advancement of Science","doi":"10.1126/science.183.4131.1307","issn":"00368075","usgsCitation":"Murray, B.C., Belton, M.J., Danielson, G.E., Davies, M.E., Gault, D., Hapke, B., O'Leary, B., Strom, R., Suomi, V., and Trask, N., 1974, Venus: Atmospheric motion and structure from Mariner 10 pictures: Science, v. 183, no. 4131, p. 1307-1315, https://doi.org/10.1126/science.183.4131.1307.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"1307","endPage":"1315","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":220879,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"otherGeospatial":"Venus","volume":"183","issue":"4131","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bc213e4b08c986b32a8ef","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Murray, B. This capability opens a new era in volcanology where the hundreds of normally quiescent but potentially dangerous volcanoes near populated regions around the world can be economically and reliably monitored. A prototype global volcano surveillance system has been established beginning in the fall of 1972 with the help of local scientists on 15 volcanoes in Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, California, Iceland. Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. Data on earthquake activity and ground tilt are received 6 to 10 times daily in Menlo Park, California, within 90 minutes of transmission from the sites. Seismic event counters were installed at 19 locations with biaxial borehole tiltineters with 1 microradian sensitivity installed at seven sites. Direct comparison of seismic events that are counted with records from nearby seismic stations show the event counters work quite reliably. An order of magnitude increase in seismic events was observed prior to the eruption of Volcán Fuego in Guatemala in February, 1973. Significant changes in tilt were observed on volcanoes Kilauea. Fuego, and Pacava. This study demonstrates the technological and economic feasibility of utilizing such a volcano surveillance system throughout the world.

","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/BF02599410","usgsCitation":"Endo, E., Ward, P., Harlow, D., Allen, R.V., and Eaton, J.P., 1974, A prototype global volcano surveillance system monitoring seismic activity and tilt: Bulletin Volcanologique, v. 38, p. 315-344, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF02599410.","productDescription":"30 p.","startPage":"315","endPage":"344","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":373487,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"38","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Endo, E.T.","contributorId":45308,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Endo","given":"E.T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":785457,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ward, P.L.","contributorId":31422,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ward","given":"P.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":785458,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Harlow, D.H.","contributorId":34533,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Harlow","given":"D.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":785459,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Allen, R. These materials occur only within the dark mantle that overlies old rilled mare and highland units and are absent on the younger mare unit in this area. Orange and red materials occur predominantly as halos, patches, or rays around fresh impact craters ranging in diameter from less than 50 to 250 m and in layers exposed at the base of the dark mantle deposit in the steep walls of a depression and a graben. Red material is present in the highland subsurface, possibly as dikes. We conclude that orange material, locally underlain by red material, occurs in the dark mantle to a depth of about 50 m as locally stratified but discontinuous pyroclastic deposits and that it may have been produced by multiple 'fire foundation' eruptions during the later stages of accumulation of the older mare basalt units.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings, 5th Lunar Science Conference","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"Lunar Science Conference","conferenceDate":"March 18-22, 1974","conferenceLocation":"Houston, TX","language":"English","publisher":"Pergamon Press","usgsCitation":"Lucchitta, B.K., and Schmitt, H., 1974, Orange material in the Sulpicius Gallus formation at the southwestern edge of Mare Serenitatis, in Proceedings, 5th Lunar Science Conference, v. 1, Houston, TX, March 18-22, 1974, p. 223-234.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"223","endPage":"234","costCenters":[{"id":131,"text":"Astrogeology Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":358649,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":358648,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ntrs.nasa.gov/search.jsp?R=19750055485"}],"volume":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lucchitta, Baerbel K. blucchitta@usgs.gov","contributorId":3649,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lucchitta","given":"Baerbel","email":"blucchitta@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":749366,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Schmitt, H.H.","contributorId":8559,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schmitt","given":"H.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":749367,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

In order to accomplish these objectives, a three-pronged approach was devised to include: (1) a reconnaissance of the entire State to locate problem areas, (2) the detailed study of selected problem areas on a short-term basis, and (3) the monitoring of selected problem areas on a long-term basis.

This report summarizes the results of the reconnaissance phase. In the past, towns such as Cripple Creek, Leadville, Creede, and many others were the lifeblood of the economy. While metal mining is still economically important to Colorado, another legacy of this past activity is attracting increasing attention—the detrimental effects of drainage from abandoned and active mines and tailings piles (waste rock piles) on streams. Concern with metal-mine drainage is due to the acid resulting from oxidation of pyritic material. The acid itself can be harmful to aquatic organisms, and can make the water unusable for various recreational and industrial needs. Just as importantly, however, the acid dissolves metals from ores and tailings piles and releases them into the streams. Many of the metals are toxic to aquatic organisms, humans, and livestock; and, like excess acidity, the metals can make streams unusable for some types of recreation and industry.

In July 1971, a study of the effects of both metal- and coal-mine drainage on surface-water quality in Colorado was undertaken by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Colorado Water Pollution Control Commission. Based on the reconnaissance phase of this project (Wentz, 1974), 17 areas judged to be adversely affected by metal-mine drainage were chosen for further study. One additional area was included because it is the only place found in Colorado that potentially could be affected by coal-mine drainage. The present report summarizes the intensive study of these areas; it is the second product of the mine-drainage study. The first report was published as Colorado Water Resources Circular 21.
","language":"English","publisher":"Colorado Water Conservation Board","publisherLocation":"Denver, Colorado","collaboration":"Prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Colorado Water Pollution Control Commission","usgsCitation":"Moran, R.E., and Wentz, D.A., 1974, Effects of metal-mine drainage on water quality in selected areas of Colorado, 1972-73: Colorado Water Resources Circular 25, vi, 250 p. .","productDescription":"vi, 250 p.
