Much of the information on lakes and reservoirs previously collected by Federal and State agencies has never been published. These data were compiled and used as a basis for collecting additional information. This report provides information for use by city, county, and State planning groups as well as for sportsmen, tourists, and others interested in preserving the recreational value of Oregon's lakes.</p><p>Because of the large number of lakes and reservoirs in Oregon, a single report covering the State would be bulky. Therefore, the lake information is being published in several volumes on a county or multicounty basis. Volume .1, published in 1973, covered Clatsop, Columbia, and Tillamook Counties. Benton, Lincoln, and Polk Counties were selected for this report. (See fig. 1.)</p><p>In addition to office compilation of existing data, most lakes were also visited. Visits were made in late summer or early fall when lakes were most accessible and when water temperature and biological activity are at a maximum. The floods resulted from runoff from warm, moderately heavy rain that continued most of the week, augmented by runoff from the rapid melting of a near-record snowpack that extended to low elevations. New record peak flows occurred at many gaging stations which have been operated continuously for 20 to 50 years and at on which has been operated since 1907. At least two deaths were attributable to the floods, and property damage in the four hardest hit counties were estimate by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to be $21 The assemblages critical to determining the conditions of metamorphism are (1) chlorite-epidote-hematite-pumpellyite-prehnite; actinolite-chlorite-hematite-pumpellyite-stilpnomelane; (2) actinolite-chlorite-epidote-stilpnomelane; chlorite-epidote-pumpellyite-stilpnomelane; chlorite-epidote-hematite-pumpellyite; (3) chlorite-epidote-hematite-pumpellyite-stilpnomelane; chlorite-epidote-pumpellyite-prehnite; and (4) chlorite-epidote-prehnite; chlorite-prehnite-stilpnomelane; chlorite-epidote-pumpellyite-prehnite. One pumpellyite-bearing rock from western Newfoundland shows a later vein of analcime-calcite. All the assemblages also include quartz, sphene, calcite, K-mica, and albite.</p><p class=\"chapter-para\">Analysis of the mineral assemblages by the Schreinemakers method for the phases actinolite-chlorite-epidote-hematite-prehnite-pumpellyite-stilpnomelane shows that the different localities can be assigned different metamorphic grades. Though the detailed results of the Schreinemakers analysis depend on the assumed source of ferric iron in epidote, the major conclusions are not affected. The thermodynamic role of calcite is more problematic, but it appears that CO<sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>did not behave as a boundary-value component during metamorphism. If calcite is treated as an excess phase, the Schreinemakers bundle decomposes to a net in a multisystem. Plotted on such a net, the various localities again occupy different parts signifying different metamorphic grades.</p><p class=\"chapter-para\">The occurrence of pumpellyite-bearing assemblages on the west flank of the northern Appalachian metamorphic belt might suggest that these assemblages, contrary to the ideas of Miyashiro and of others, do not indicate high-pressure and low-temperature type of metamorphism. These assemblages, however, are compatible with an alternative interpretation as remnants of a high-pressure, low-temperature Taconic metamorphic regime, whose imprint within most of the Appalachian metamorphic belt has been obliterated by later events. It attains a maximum thickness of 750 ft. at the southeastern edge of the Appalachian coal field and thins northwestward by the tonguing out of lower beds and by the truncation of upper beds at an overlying unconformity.</p><p>Sandstone, which composes about 70 percent of the formation, occurs in lenticular bodies that have two distinct distribution patterns—lobate and linear—of contrasting orientation and composition. The lobate bodies are elongate to the northwest and contain sandstone having a quartz content of about 50 to 65 percent. Within a lobe, thickness lines show a northwestward bifurcating pattern similar to the pattern of channels in an alluvial distributary system of a modern delta. Laterally, lobate bodies merge to form northwestward-thinning sandstone wedges as much as 300 ft. thick. The linear pattern is shown by 3- to 8-mi.-wide sandstone lenses that extend north-northeast for about 45 mi. They are near the distal ends of the lobate sandstone and consist of 0 to 140 ft. of relatively pure quartzose sandstone. The well-washed character and orientation of the linear bodies, normal to the lobate bodies, indicate a barrier-bar origin.</p><p>These sediment distribution patterns show that the Pocahontas Formation was deposited mainly in deltaic complexes built out from the southeast during marine regression to the northwest.
