The model simulates the interrelations among ground water and surface water including reservoirs, losses, and transmountain diversions, utilizing various water-distribution rules. The model was used to analyze 24 water-management plans designed to reduce shortages in the irrigation supply. One management plan simulated salvage of water from phreatophyte evapotranspiration, different reservoir operation regulations, use of imported ground and surface water, a new reservoir, additional ground-water use, and application of excess streamflow. The resulting annual dependable supply was increased from 610,000 acre-feet to 870,000 acre-feet in relation to an annual demand of 1,100,000 acre-feet. The hydrometric programme in the United States consists of 8400 full-record stations and an equal number of partial-record stations operated by 47 district offices. A sampling of four districts selected to represent the range of hydrometric conditions in the country indicated that costs (in 1972) for installation of a full-record station intended for indefinite terms of operation ranged between $5000 and $10,000. Short-term stations range between $2500 and $4000. Costs of operation for full-record stations ranged between $800 and $1250 per year, whereas office costs for processing the record ranged between $500 and $1250. A very considerable emphasis is given in the programme to partial-record stations designed to furnish specific information for floods and droughts. Annual costs in terms of full-record stations range from only 5 per cent for a low-flow station, 15–20 per cent for a crest-stage record, to 50 per cent for a flood-hydrogram station. Publication costs average about $7 per page. This small sample survey shows considerable variations and even greater variations might be expected internationally. In any case, differences in costs nationally or internationally invite proper inquiry as to causes in the search for economy.
","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Very little is mentioned, however, on possible interferences. In an attempt to use this technique for the determination of selenium in natural waters, interferences were found. The most serious interference occurred when arsenic was present. As little as 5 μg of arsenic/l suppressed the formation of selenium hydride. Because arsenic may be present with selenium in natural waters, the above method was abandoned in favor of the following atomic absorption spectrophotometric method for the determination of both inorganic and organically bound selenium. Organic selenium compounds, if present, are first decomposed by digestion with potassium permanganate in hot acid solution. The solution is then made basic and the solution evaporated to dryness in the presence of calcium chloride which prevents the loss of selenate during the evaporation. Hydrochloric acid is added to the residue to reduce the selenate to selenite. Quantitative reduction is obtained without loss of selenium by controlling the temperature, time, and acid concentration. It should be emphasized that the selenium must be in the selenite form prior to its final reduction. The selenium is finally liberated from 6M hydrochloric acid solution with stannous chloride and the selenium hydride vapor subsequently removed from solution by aeration and swept by a flow of nitrogen into a hydrogen flame where it is determined by atomic absorption at 196.0 nm. The method may be used to analyze water samples containing at least 2 μg/l of selenium.
","language":"English","publisher":"Perkin-Elmer Corporation","usgsCitation":"Lansford, M., McPherson, E.M., and Fishman, M., 1974, Determination of selenium in water: Atomic Absorption Newsletter, v. 13, no. 4, p. 103-105.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"103","endPage":"105","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":419526,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"13","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lansford, M.","contributorId":317859,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lansford","given":"M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":879514,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"McPherson, E. In the Kalamazoo River (a tributary of southeastern Lake Michigan) age group II was commonest in the catches, and no fish older than age IV were sampled. In western Lake Erie, most shiners were in age groups 0-II, and none were older than age IV. Mortality of males was much higher than that of females after age II in Lake Michigan and after age I in Lake Erie. Growth of spottail shiners was fastest in western Lake Erie (125 mm at the end of the third year, sexes combined) and slowest (77 mm) in the Kalamazoo River; in all three waters growth declined rapidly after the first year. Females grew faster than males.\nYoung shiners started growing earlier in the year than older ones in all three waters. Males and females of the same age resumed growth at about the same time. The growing season began as early as mid-May in the Kalamazoo River and continued as late as September or early October in the other two waters. Small spottail shiners in Lake Michigan and the Kalamazoo River weighed about the same at a given length, but at lengths greater than about 100 mm the lake fish were heavier. In all three waters, spottail shiners matured at about the same length, and males at a somewhat smaller size than females. Smallest mature fish were 65-69 mm long, and the largest immatures were 80-84 mm. In Lake Michigan about half and in Lake Erie about three-quarters of age-I fish were mature, as were all age-II fish in both lakes. In the Kalamazoo River a few fish of age II and all of age III were mature. The spawning season in Lake Michigan in 1964 was from late June or early July to late July, whereas in 1972, which had a colder spring, spawning occurred from mid-July to late August or early September. All shiners in the Kalamazoo River had spawned by the end of June if 1964. Lake Erie spottail shiners spawned during early June to early or mid-July in 1958. Of 93 recoveries from 2,265 tagged lampreys released below the navigation locks in the St. Marys River, 80 were in Lake Huron, 12 in Lake Superior, and 1 in Lake Erie; of 359 recaptures from 1,666 released in northern Lake Huron, 331 were in Lake Huron, 25 in Lake Michigan, and 3 in the St. Marys River; and of 25 recaptures from 117 released in Lake Michigan, 21 were in Lake Michigan and 4 in Lake Huron.\nOf the 477 sea lampreys recovered, 209 (44%) were captured more than 15 km from the locality of release; 42 had traveled 160-628 km (average, 275 km) before they were recaptured.\nAmong recaptures from sea lampreys released in northern Lake Huron, 240 (67%) were recovered within 15 km of the release point in less than 50 days after release; only 12 were recaptured within this radius after 50 or more days of liberty.\nProbability of recapture was not influenced by size among sea lampreys longer than 205 mm (total length), but the lampreys recaptured at the greater distances from the tagging localities tended to be large. All of 34 lampreys recaptured more than 150 km from the point of release were longer than 254 mm (average, 418 mm) when tagged and 9 recaptured more than 300 km away were longer than 354 mm (average, 441 mm).\nFour sea lampreys 345-445 mm long when tagged in November or early December were recovered in mid-September of the following year, at least 2 months after the end of the normal spawning season. Suggested possible reasons for this unusual occurrence are the extension of the parasitic phase of the life cycle beyond the usual 12 to 20 months, late-season maturation of the gonads, disease, or deleterious effects of the tags.","language":"English","publisher":"Great Lakes Fishery Commission","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Moore, H.H., Dahl, F.H., and Lamsa, A.K., 1974, Movement and recapture of parasitic-phase sea lampreys (Petromyzon marinus) tagged in the St. Marys River and Lakes Huron and Michigan, 1963-67: Technical Report 27, 19 p.","productDescription":"19 p.","startPage":"0","endPage":"19","numberOfPages":"19","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":198861,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":92054,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://www.glfc.org/pubs/TechReports/Tr27.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b32e4b07f02db6b47ef","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moore, Harry H.","contributorId":48670,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moore","given":"Harry","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":324956,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Dahl, Frederick H.","contributorId":90258,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dahl","given":"Frederick","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":324957,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Lamsa, Aarne K.","contributorId":26787,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lamsa","given":"Aarne","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":324955,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Serious efforts to control the parasite began in 1953 with the installation of electrical barriers in streams to block spawning runs. Control measures became much more effective after 1958, when a selective toxicant, the lampricide 3-trifluoromethyl-4-nitrophenol (TFM), was used to destroy larval lampreys in streams.\nA unique methodology was developed for stream treatments which included surveys to find sea lamprey larvae, bioassays to determine effective lampricide concentrations, analytical techniques to monitor concentrations of lampricide throughout the treatment, and feeder systems to apply the toxicant in controlled amounts. Evidence of successful control was indicated first by reduced sea lamprey spawning runs, as measured by the numbers of adults taken at electrical barriers. The runs declined in 1962 by about 86%; periodic re-treatments of lamprey-infested streams held the population at a low level in 1963-70. Other indicators of success were decreases in the incidence of sea lamprey wounds on lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush), in the numbers of sea lamprey larvae in streams, and in the number of streams regularly used by sea lampreys for spawning.\nAlthough sea lamprey control and heavy plantings of hatchery-reared stock had restored lake trout abundance to prelamprey levels in many areas by 1970, the trout had not yet become self-sustaining. Additional effort will be required to further reduce the effects of lamprey predation.","language":"English","publisher":"Great Lakes Fishery Commission","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Smith, B.R., Tibbles, J.J., and Johnson, B.G., 1974, Control of the sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) in Lake Superior, 1953-70: Technical Report 26, 60 p.","productDescription":"60 p.","startPage":"0","endPage":"60","numberOfPages":"60","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":198782,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":92055,"rank":800,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://www.glfc.org/pubs/TechReports/Tr26.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae2e4b07f02db688cf1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smith, Bernard R.","contributorId":38924,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"Bernard","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":324967,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Tibbles, J. Fish were recruited to all the collection gears at age II. Relatively strong year classes were produced in 1962, 1965, and 1966. Youngest fish were captured in the upper end of the Moreau River embayment, which apparently serves as a nursery area. Growth of age 0 fish was poor probably because the growing season was short; optimum spawning temperature were not reached until mid-summer. Growth of age II and older fish reached a peak in 1963 and declined rather steadily in 1964-68. Males began to mature at age VIII, and all fish of both sexes were mature at age XI. The diet changed from zooplankton to fish as channel catfish increased in length; aquatic insects (primarily chironomid larvae and pupae) were important foods for fish of all sizes. Fish less than 300 mm long selected large zooplankters -- Leptodora kindtii and Daphnia spp -- over smaller copepods. Larger channel catfish ate principally yellow perch, Perca flavescens.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Starostka, V.J., and Nelson, W.R., 1974, Age, growth, sexual maturity, and food of channel catfish in central Lake Oahe, 1968-69: Technical Paper 81, 13 p.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"0","endPage":"13","numberOfPages":"13","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":198174,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":266940,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://hdl.handle.net/2027/uc1.31822006841605?urlappend=%3Bseq=231"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae3e4b07f02db68926b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Starostka, Victor J.","contributorId":93550,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Starostka","given":"Victor","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":326467,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Nelson, William R.","contributorId":58326,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nelson","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":326466,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
