Success has been slight in areas deficient in calcium.....In Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, no environmental difference other than presence or absence of limestone was discovered that might explain the high population in the limestone valley and the scarcity of pheasants in the non-calcareous Piedmont area....Pheasants at the Patuxent Refuge, when given limestone grit, reproduced successfully on a diet roughly comparable to the natural pheasant diet but failed to reproduce adequately on such a diet when granite grit, instead of limestone, was supplied.....A supplement of powdered calcium carbonate in the diet was adequate t,o permit production of eggs by birds on the granite grit.....Birds receiving granite grit had apparently normal eggs in the ovary but failed to ovulate more than a very few eggs. The precise role of calciun~i n permitting ovulation was not investigated.....It is concluded that calcium, which is low in the natural pheasant diet, must be supplemented in some way to permit pheasants to reproduce. The trees sampled were lodgepole pine (<i>Pinus contorta</i>), Engelmann spruce (<i>Picea engelmannii</i>) and Douglas fir (<i>Pseudotsuga menziesii</i>). The condensed exudates were passed through No. 40 Whatman filters, and through 5-micron, 0.45-micron, and 0.05-micron average-pore-diameter membrane filters, evaporated to dryness, and each residue was ashed and analyzed by a semiquantitative spectrographic method.</div><div class=\"u-margin-s-bottom\">The ashed residues of the exudates contain lithium, beryllium, boron, sodium, magnesium, titanium, vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, gallium, arsenic, strontium, yttrium, zirconium, molybdenum, silver, lead, bismuth, cadmium, tin, antimony, barium, and lanthanum.</div><div class=\"u-margin-s-bottom\">The presence of these elements suggests that volatile exudates from vegetation are a medium for the transport of elements in the biogeochemical cycle in subalpine environments. Thus, air sampling and analysis of aerosols derived from volatile exudates may be a useful tool in geochemical exploration.</div></div></div></div><ul id=\"issue-navigation\" class=\"issue-navigation The area was studied in 1973 by the U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Bureau of Mines to evaluate its mineral, fuel, and geothermal energy potential. This evaluation is based on a search of the geologic literature, claim and production records, and fieldwork including mapping, inspection of claims and prospects, interpretation of aeromagnetic maps, and analyses of bedrock and stream-sediment samples.</p><p>Flat-lying Eocene volcaniclastic rocks of the Absaroka volcanic field are exposed in about two-thirds of the Du Noir Addition. These volcanics unconformably overlie the deeply eroded, northwest-trending Du Noir anticline in which Paleozoic marine strata of Devonian through Permian age are exposed. Of lesser importance are small deposits of Eocene non-volcanic conglomerate, and basaltic intrusive and extrusive rocks of late Pliocene and possibly younger age.</p><p>The results of this study indicate that the mineral, fuel, and geothermal potential of the Du Noir Addition are minimal. Low-grade copper-molybdenum mineralization occurs outside the addition, associated with intrusive rocks, but no indications of alteration or mineralization were found within the study area. Anomalous, but not economically important, concentrations of molybdenum and uranium were found in Permian and Eocene carbonaceous shales. Phosphate rock in the Phosphoria Formation occurs in beds too thin to constitute a resource. Large amounts of very pure limestone are present in the Madison Limestone, but equally pure limestone, much closer to transportation facilities, is found throughout this part of Wyoming. That part of the Du Noir anticline in the addition is too deeply eroded to be a likely reservoir of oil and gas. During the 72-day fishing period, 13,171 fish weighing 21,669 kg were taken. Bigmouth buffalo (<i>Ictiobus cyprinellus</i>) and smallmouth buffalo (<i>Ictiobus bubalus</i>) dominated the catch (78.2% by weight). Eight sport species accounted for 3.6% of the total catch. Both 7.0-cm and 12.7-cm mesh (extended measure) were used in the back of the bailing crib of the nets to determine the effect of the 12.7-cm mesh in reducing the catch of sport species and nonmarketable size groups of commercial species. I revisited the nest on 31 May and on 7, 9, 12, 15, 16, 20, and 21 June, and found an incubating adult on the nest during all visits except 21 June. Another adult was seen near the nest site only on 9 May. On 12 June the eggs looked rotten, and the incubating bird seemed to have a crippled leg.
