Also, sulfonamide-sensitive strains developed resistance to ormetoprim and sulfadimethoxine more rapidly than to Ro5–0037. Efficacy studies with small numbers of artificially infected trout revealed that Ro5–0037 effectively controlled furunculosis at 50 mg/kg of fish/day, one fourth the usual sulfonamide dosage level. Extensive field trials also showed the 50 mg/kg level of Ro5–0037 gave effective control of hatchery outbreaks of furunculosis. Maps of elemental abundance within the bay indicate large concentration gradients, the highest values being near the harbor entrance. Seasonal determinations of metal levels in the harbor and bay waters also revealed variations with time. During summer, stagnation of the harbor water increases the concentration of metals so that significant quantities precipitate in the reducing environment of the bottom water. In winter, the exchange of water between the bay and the harbor increases, and metals are redissolved from harbor deposits, washed into the bay, and adsorbed by particles settling to the bottom.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Environmental Science and Technology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"American Chemical Society","publisherLocation":"Easton, PA","doi":"10.1021/es60088a001","issn":"0013936X","usgsCitation":"Holmes, C.W., Slade, E., and McLerran, C., 1974, Migration and redistribution of zinc and cadmium in marine estuarine system: Environmental Science & Technology, v. 8, no. 3, p. 255-259, https://doi.org/10.1021/es60088a001.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"255","endPage":"259","numberOfPages":"5","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":218772,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":292719,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1021/es60088a001"}],"volume":"8","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2002-05-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a56f6e4b0c8380cd6d95d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Holmes, Charles W.","contributorId":31071,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Holmes","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":218,"text":"Denver Federal Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":357773,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Slade, Elizabeth A.","contributorId":67807,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Slade","given":"Elizabeth A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":357775,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"McLerran, C.J.","contributorId":56161,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McLerran","given":"C.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":357774,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

At least three of these were classified as intensity X. In addition, seven earthquakes (intensity VI or greater) were centered in the eastern part of the State. Almost 2,000 other shocks have been cataloged in the nearly 125-year period of historical records. The channels normally form without erosion; however, sustained flow can result in the incision of a lava channel and simulation of fluvial erosion features. Lava erosion by means of thermal incision was modelled by computer, erosion rates calculated, and these compared with rates observed terrestrially. Lunar sinuous rilles are examined in light of the proposed lava erosion. The mechanism explains many features of lunar rilles that were heretofore puzzling and implies erosion rates comparable to terrestrial rates. Many Mars channels also appear to form by the action of lava; however, the larger, more spectacular Mars channels do not appear to have been formed by the same process.</p></div></div></div><ul id=\"issue-navigation\" class=\"issue-navigation u-margin-s-bottom u-bg-grey1\"></ul>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0019-1035(74)90162-6","issn":"00191035","usgsCitation":"Carr, M.H., 1974, The role of lava erosion in the formation of lunar rilles and Martian channels: Icarus, v. 22, no. 1, p. 1-23, https://doi.org/10.1016/0019-1035(74)90162-6.","productDescription":"23 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"23","numberOfPages":"23","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":218935,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"22","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505baf7de4b08c986b324827","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Carr, M. In the United States, this interest has been centered on oil shale. Any major action by the federal government having significant environmental effects requires compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA). Since most oil shale is found on federal lands, and since its development involves significant environmental impacts, leasing oil shale lands to private interests must be in compliance with NEPA. For oil shale, program planning began at approximately the same time that NEPA was signed into law. By structuring the program to permit a resource and technological inventory by industry and the federal agencies, the Department of the Interior was able simultaneously to conduct the environmental assessments required by the act. This required: 1. Clearly defined program objections; 2. An organization which could integrate public policy with diverse scientific disciplines and environmental concerns; and 3. Flexible decisionmaking to adjust to policy changes as well as to evolving interpretations on EPA as clarified by court decisions. This paper outlines the program, the organization structure that was created for this specific task, and the environmental concerns which were investigated. The success of the program has been demonstrated by meeting the requirements of NEPA, without court challenge, and by industry's acceptance of a leasing program that included the most stringent environmental protection provisions ever required. The need for energy development has spurred the acceptance of the program. However, by its awareness and willingness to meet the environmental challenges of the future, industry has shown a reasonable understanding of its commitments. The pros and cons of development were publicly considered in hearings and analyzed in the final environmental statement. This action aided greatly in preventing legal challenges. The prototype oil shale program is now under way and this new energy source, developed with strict environmental safeguards, may soon be available to our nation.","largerWorkTitle":"Preprints","language":"English","issn":"05693799","usgsCitation":"Stone, R., Johnson, H., and Decora, A., 1974, Oil shale development and its environmental considerations, <i>in</i> Preprints, v. 19, no. 3.","startPage":"510","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":220955,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"19","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a6cf8e4b0c8380cd74ecc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stone, R.T.","contributorId":75680,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stone","given":"R.T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":360185,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Johnson, H.","contributorId":61163,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnson","given":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":360184,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Decora, A.","contributorId":45455,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Decora","given":"A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":360183,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

For some time geologists have known that the remarkable array of steam and hot water displays, for which the park is internationally famous, is associated with intense volcanic activity that occurred in the reigon during the last 2 million years. The most recent volcanic eruption took place about 600,000 years ago creating a large caldera, or crater, 75 kilometers long and 50 kilometers wide. This caldera occupies most of the central part of the present-day park. geologists knew from studies of the surface geology that the volcanic activity which creates the present caldera was caused the present caldera was caused by a large body of magma, a mixture composed of molten rock, hot liquids, and gases, that had forced its way from the deep interior of the Earth into the upper mantle and crust below the Yellowstone area. The dimensions and depth below the surface of this magma body were largely unknown, however, because there was no way to \"see\" deep below the surface. A tool was needed that would enable earth scientists to look into the curst and upper mantle of the Earth.
