Parts of both the Targhee and Beaverhead National Forests are within the study area. Four contiguous parcels of land, totaling about 96,176 acres (38,922 ha) make up the area. The first of these encompasses about 46,126 acres (18,667 ha), is wholly in Montana, and includes an addition by the Bureau of Land Management. The second area, in the Targhee National Forest, consists of some 38,750 acres (15,682 ha) within Idaho. The third and fourth parcels include about 11,300 acres (4,573 ha) in the Beaverhead..and Targhee National Forests that overlies the Mt. Jefferson and Sawtell Peak areas in the eastern part of the Centennial Mountains.

Geological, geochemical, and geophysical evidence, together with a 'review of historical mining and prospecting activities, suggests that most of the Whitewater Wilderness Study Area has low potential for all types of mineral and energy resources- including precious and base metals, building stone and aggregate, fossil fuels, radioactive-mineral resources, and geothermal resources. One small area in the southern part of the study area shows evidence of gold and silver mineralization, and this locality has a low to moderate potential for the discovery of low-grade gold and silver resources.

The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, the arm of the San Francisco Bay estuary that reaches into the Central Valley of California, differs from typical coastal-plain deltas in three important respects.  First, rather than meeting the ocean individually and directly, all major waterways of this delta discharge via a single constricted outlet into a chain of estuarine bays and straits.  Second, in the most common vertical sequence of deposits, peat and mud deposited in tidal marshes and swamps (tidal wetlands) directly overlie alluvium or eolian sand, a sequence recording a landward spread of tidal environments rather than the seaward migration of fluvial environments that is typical of coastal-plain deltas (Cosby, 1941, p. 43; Thompson, 1957, p. 12; Shlemon and Begg, 1975, p. 259; Atwater and Belknap, 1980).  Finally, intensive human use has led to a peculiar set of conflicts involving rights to water and responsibilities for flood-control levees (Kockelman and other, 1982).

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) made a reconnaissance geochemical survey of the Ramseys Draft Addition (fig.1) to test for indistinct or unexposed mineral deposits that might be recognized by their geochemical halos.  Thirty-three stream-sediment, two soil, and 22 rock samples were collected from the addition during the earlier study of Ramseys Draft Wilderness Study Area (Lesure and others, 1977).  The author, assisted by James D. Bliss, April 1979, and Andrew E. Grosz, October 1979, collected 57 stream-sediment, 143 soil, and 22 rock samples in and near the addition to complete the sampling pattern.  The earlier studies of Ramseys Draft outlined a low-grade stratabound copper deposit in greenish-gray sandstone of the Hampshire Formation of Late Devonian age (Lesure and Motooka, 1980), and the sampling in the addition was designed to check for more such deposits.

Although the Rock Pile Mountain Wilderness Study Area is within the general boundary of the Southeast Missouri mining district, it has no record of mineral production and there is no mining or prospecting activity at present. Exploratory drill holes on private land along the west side of the area encountered no economic mineralization.

Neither the Precambrlan volcanic rocks nor the Cambrlan sedimentary rocks contain any detectable evidence of economic mineralization. The area has no potential for coal resources, an unfavorable potential for oil and gas, and no known potential for geothermal energy. The volcanic rocks might be suitable for use as crushed stone, but similar rocks occur abundantly in more favorable locations elsewhere.

The Muddy Mountains Wilderness Study Area (WSA 050-0229), Clark County, Nevada, has a high potential for mineral deposits of calcium borates and lithium. The known and potential mineral deposits are concentrated in the east-central and south-central parts of the study area (see map). Zeolites (in particular clinoptilolite) are present in some tuff beds throughout much of the study area, and this resource potential is probably moderate to high. Stream-sediment sampling suggests that the Muddy Mountains area has little potential for mineral deposits of metals (other than lithium). Clay minerals are mined at one locality in the (!rea (see map). Building stone and silica sand have moderate to low potential in some places. Oil and gas potential within the study area is low, but complete evaluation of its potential is not possible without drilling.

Geological, geochemical, and geophysical evidence, together with a review of historical mining and prospecting activities, suggests that most of the Bighorn Mountains Wilderness Study Area has low potential for the discovery of all types of mineral and energy resources-including precious and base metals, building stone and aggregate, fossil fuels, radioactive-mineral resources, and geothermal resources. Low-grade mineralization has been documented in one small area near Rattlesnake Canyon, and this area has low to moderate potential for future small-scale exploration and development of precious and base metals. Thorium and uranium enrichment have been documented in two small areas in the eastern part of the wilderness study area; these two areas have low to moderate potential for future small-scale exploration and development of radioactive-mineral resources.
