Stratified drift, consisting dominantly of sand and gravel, occurs in irregularly shaped linear deposits that are generally less than a mile wide and less than 125 feet thick; these deposits are found along the Pawcatuck River, its tributaries, and abandoned preglacial channels. Deposits of stratified sand and gravel constitute the principal aquifer in the lower Pawcatuck basin and the only one capable of sustaining yields of 100 gallons per minute or more to individual wells. \r\n\r\nWater available for development in this aquifer consists of water in storage--potential ground-water runoff to streams--plus infiltration that can be induced from streams. Minimum annual ground-water runoff from the sand and gravel aquifer is calculated to be at least 1.17 cubic feet per second per square mile, or 0.76 million gallons per day per square mile. Potential recharge by induced infiltration is estimated to range from about 250 to 600 gallons per day per linear foot of streambed for the principal streams. In most areas, induced infiltration from streams constitutes the major source of water potentially available for development by wells. \r\n\r\nBecause subsurface hydraulic connection in the sand and gravel aquifer is poor in several places, the deposits are conveniently divisible into several ground-water reservoirs. The potential yield from five of the most promising ground-water reservoirs is evaluated by means of mathematical models. Results indicate that continuous withdrawals ranging from 1.3 to 10.3 million gallons per day, and totaling 31 million gallons per day, are obtainable from these reservoirs. Larger yields may be recovered by different well placement, spacing, construction and development, pumping practice, and so forth. \r\n\r\nWithdrawals at the rates indicated will reduce streamflow downstream from pumping centers but generally will not result in streams going dry, provided the water is returned to the basin. Export of water from the basin will require careful consideration of the effects of such withdrawals on low streamflow. Export from the Pawcatuck basin of 27 million gallons per day, estimated to be available from ground-water reservoirs in the upper Pawcatuck basin, in addition to 37.5 million gallons per day available in the lower Pawcatuck basin, will markedly reduce low streamflow. The 90-percent duration flow of the Pawcatuck River at Westerly would be reduced from 75 million gallons per day to perhaps as little as 21 million gallons per day. \r\n\r\nThe chemical quality of water from both the sand and gravel aquifer and associated streams is suitable for most purposes. The water is soft, slightly acidic, and typically has a dissolved-solids content of less than 75 milligrams per liter. Some treatment may be required locally for removal of iron and manganese to meet recommended standards of the U.S. Public Health Service for drinking water.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wsp2033","usgsCitation":"Gonthier, J.B., Johnston, H.E., and Malmberg, G.T., 1974, Availability of ground water in the lower Pawcatuck River basin, Rhode Island: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2033, Report: iv, 40 p.; 5 Plates: 20.00 x 38.88 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp2033.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 40 p.; 5 Plates: 20.00 x 38.88 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":422303,"rank":8,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_25524.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":26771,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2033/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26769,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2033/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":137039,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2033/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":26773,"rank":7,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2033/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26772,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2033/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26774,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2033/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26770,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2033/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Rhode Island","otherGeospatial":"lower Pawcatuck River basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -71.843,\n              41.667\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.843,\n              41.345\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.614,\n              41.345\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.614,\n              41.667\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.843,\n              41.667\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ae4b07f02db65d91d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gonthier, Joseph B.","contributorId":74350,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gonthier","given":"Joseph","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":143976,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Johnston, Herbert E.","contributorId":16392,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnston","given":"Herbert","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143975,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Malmberg, Glenn T.","contributorId":11196,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Malmberg","given":"Glenn","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143974,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Do they follow regular patterns of recurrence, and if so, what is the length of the recurrence interval? These questions are of obvious importance to populations located in regions where earthquakes are a commonplace occurrence. They are also relevant questions in regions that are for the most part seismically inactive but that have &nbsp;experienced anomalous earthquakes of destructive force one or more times in recorded history. Also, what about areas that have never experienced an earthquake in historic times? Human history is short when compared to the geologic time scale. Is it possible that places which we regard as seismically inactive might actually have experienced a major earthquake in the recent geologic past? Historic records of earthquakes are too short to allow a true assessment of recurrence intervals; therefore, a method is needed that will enable the seismic history of a region to be exteneded beyond the limit of historic time. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Sims, J., 1974, Searching for prehistoric earthquakes in lake sediments: Earthquake Information Bulletin (USGS), v. 6, no. 1, p. 3-9.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"3","endPage":"9","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":318207,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"6","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56c99c53e4b059daa47c9ae5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sims, J.","contributorId":167094,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Sims","given":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":620988,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

F. Reid, a contemporary seismologist, proposed the elastic rebound theory which in effect says that earthquake potential arises from the accumulation of elastic strain within the Earth's crust, just as the stretching of a rubberband creates the potential for violent rebound upon rupture. A direct manifestation of this crustal strain accumulation is the change in distance between adjacent points along opposite sides of a fault. In order to measure the rate at which strain is accumulating along California's San Andreas fault, a netwrok of precise survey lines which criss-cross the fault along its entire lenght in the State is periodically resurveyed with very accurate electro-opitcal distance measuring devices called geodimeters.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Savage, J., 1974, The California geodimeter network; measuring movement along the San Andreas Fault: Earthquake Information Bulletin (USGS), v. 6, no. 3, p. 3-7.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"3","endPage":"7","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":318217,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.78320312499999,\n              41.178653972331674\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.23339843749999,\n              40.58058466412761\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.57421875,\n              38.788345355085625\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.1572265625,\n              34.63320791137959\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.02636718749999,\n              33.43144133557529\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.71874999999999,\n              34.488447837809304\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.2783203125,\n              38.06539235133249\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.78320312499999,\n              41.178653972331674\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"6","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56c99c54e4b059daa47c9b02","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Savage, J.C. 0000-0002-5114-7673","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5114-7673","contributorId":102876,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Savage","given":"J.C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":621002,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Their prediction was based on certain pre-earthquake processes that are best explained by a hypothesis known as \"dilatancy,\" a concept that has injected new life and direction into the science of earthquake prediction. Multiple-regression techniques are used to define the relation between flood peaks, collected at a network of gaging stations maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey, and a set of basin characteristics. Results show that flood peaks may be estimated from knowledge of the basin's drainage area, average seasonal snowfall, area of lakes and ponds, and maximum 24-hour rainfall having a recurrence interval of 2 years. The relations are presented graphically for user convenience.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr74130","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the After acid decomposition, molybdenum is extracted from a hydrochloric acid solution into xylene with tributyl phosphate. After back-extraction with water, molybdenum is extracted as the α-benzoinoximate into chloroform, stripped into hydrochloric acid extracted as the thiocyanate into amyl alcohol, and determined spectrophotometrically. The molybdenum thiocyanate color produced is stable, sensitive, and reproducible. Fish were recruited to all the collection gears at age II. Relatively strong year classes were produced in 1962, 1965, and 1966. Youngest fish were captured in the upper end of the Moreau River embayment, which apparently serves as a nursery area. Growth of age 0 fish was poor probably because the growing season was short; optimum spawning temperature were not reached until mid-summer. Growth of age II and older fish reached a peak in 1963 and declined rather steadily in 1964-68. Males began to mature at age VIII, and all fish of both sexes were mature at age XI. The diet changed from zooplankton to fish as channel catfish increased in length; aquatic insects (primarily chironomid larvae and pupae) were important foods for fish of all sizes. Fish less than 300 mm long selected large zooplankters -- <i>Leptodora kindtii</i> and <i>Daphnia spp</i> -- over smaller copepods. Larger channel catfish ate principally yellow perch, <i>Perca flavescens</i>.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Starostka, V.J., and Nelson, W.R., 1974, Age, growth, sexual maturity, and food of channel catfish in central Lake Oahe, 1968-69: Technical Paper 81, 13 p.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"0","endPage":"13","numberOfPages":"13","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":198174,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":266940,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://hdl.handle.net/2027/uc1.31822006841605?urlappend=%3Bseq=231"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae3e4b07f02db68926b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Starostka, Victor J.","contributorId":93550,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Starostka","given":"Victor","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":326467,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Nelson, William R.","contributorId":58326,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nelson","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":326466,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
