Two major earthquakes (magnitude 7.0-7.9) occurred in the New Hebrides Islands, bringing the final major earthquake total for the year to 11, somewhat below the annual average which is 18. One great earthquake (magntidue 8.0 and above) per year is average, but none &nbsp;occurred in 1973.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>An earthquake in Tennessee, centered about 30 miles south of Knoxville, caused minor damage in the Maryville-Alcoa area and was felt in seven Southeastern States. New Mexico experienced a sharp earthquake on December 24 that caused minor damage in the Grants area.</p>\n<p>Other parts of the world suffered fatalities and significant damage from earthquakes. In Iran, an earthquake killed one person, injured many, and destroyed a number of homes. The determinations were made by micropycnometer; water was used as the displacing medium, and salt corrections were based on the refractive index measurements on interstitial water. For saltier brines the \"salinities\" derived from index of refraction are somewhat too low but, for the most part, are adequate for these corrections. Water contents are those determined on the archived samples selected for these studies. They had been kept in cold storage (4°C) in screw-capped glass bottles with poly seal lids or in heat-sealed polyethylene bags for a period of about three months. </p><p>The purpose of the measurements was to gain sufficient information on grain density to permit application of the general information or pattern to the bulk water content determinations on the small syringe samples. Bulk density, porosity, and other properties could then be calculated without using volume measurements from the syringes. Whereas the data from weight loss on drying (bulk water content) at 110-120° were considered good, the volume measurements are subject to considerable error, especially in more consolidated sediments, and are not usable at all for shales, more consolidated or cemented rocks, and anhydrite. </p><p>Detailed comparisons with the GRAPE determinations were also an objective. The Red Sea cores offer a particularly good opportunity to test the validity of these measurements, which have been increasingly questioned.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"National Science The hydrogen isotope&nbsp;data indicate that meteoric water was the dominant component of the&nbsp;ore-forming fluids at Cortez. The hydrogen isotope data support&nbsp;geologic evidence for a Tertiary age for the deposit. The oxidation of&nbsp;the ore probably occurred during the deposition of postore calcite and&nbsp;was caused by waters whose oxygen isotopic composition was distinctly&nbsp;different from that of the ore fluids. The carbon isotope data suggest&nbsp;that the only carbon present in the ore fluids was derived from solution&nbsp;of the host rock. The lead and sulfur data are consistent with a possible&nbsp;sedimentary derivation for the gold in the ore. Preliminary plans call for the construction of a county-owned sanitary sewage treatment plant and several 3,000-foot deep injection wells at 1,000-foot intervals on Levee 31E. As a first stage, drilling of seven wells, capable of accepting, in the aggregate, 30 mgd (million gallons per day) of treated liquid waste, is planned. The locations of the proposed sites (fig. 1) were selected by the consultants for the Authority.</p><p>A reconnaissance was made in the vicinity of the proposed well sites to determine the chloride content of surface and ground water because this information is needed to formulate plans for the safe disposal of salt water during drilling and testing of the injection wells. The reconnaissance was part of a cooperative program with the Dade County Water and Sewer Authority to investigate the hydrologic effects of injecting treated waste water into a deep-saline aquifer.</p><p>The area of investigation is near Cutler Ridge in southeast Dade County. It occupies about 51/2 square miles bounded on the east by S.W. 77th Avenue extended, on the west by S.W. 97th Avenue, on the south by Coconut Palm Drive, and on the north by Old Cutler Road (fig. 1). Reports in this series are prepared cooperatively by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Utah Division of Water Resources and are designed to provide data to enable interested parties such as legislators, administrators, and planners to keep abreast of changing ground-water conditions.</p><p>This report, like the others (see references, p. 25), contains information on well construction, ground-water withdrawals, water-level changes, and related changes in precipitation and streamflow. Supplementary data such as graphs showing chemical quality of water and maps showing water-table configuration are included in reports of this series only for those years or areas for which applicable data are available and are important to a discussion of changing ground-water conditions.</p><p>The report includes individual discussions of the most important areas of ground-water withdrawal in the State for the calendar year 1972 and for the 10-year period 1963-72. Water-level fluctuations, however, are described for the periods spring 1972 to spring 1973 and spring 1963 to spring 1973.
