Most of the deposits are at the eastern end on the northern flank of a syncline.</p><p> Soapstone forms irregular replacement bodies as much as 100 feet thick along bedding shears, and also along a set of fracture zones which trend N. 80° W. Alteration zones, characterized by secondary microcrystalline and coarsely crystalline dolomite, commonly are associated with the soapstone. </p><p>Mining in this area, which commenced in 1952, was done originally by surface cuts; now all the operations are underground. Most production comes from five mines: the Khanda Khu, Chelethar, Bandi, Pnnjkuian, and Kharan mines. Total production is uncertain; but based on the 2,285 feet of tunnel length and on the size of the surface cuts, it is estimated to be about 20,000 tons. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey under the direction of John R. George, district chief. These data represent the Georgia portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies.</p><p>Through September 30, 1960, the records of discharge and stage of streams and contents and stage of lakes or reservoirs were published in an annual series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled, \"Surface Water Supply of the United States.\"</p><p>Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports by State. Distribution of these reports is limited; they are designed primarily for rapid release of data shortly after the end of the water year to meet local needs. The streamflow records for 1961-65 are published in the Geological Survey water-supply paper series entitled, \"Surface Water Supply of the United States, 1961-65\", and those for 1966-70 will be published in a similar series.</p><p>The Geological Survey has published records of chemical quality, suspended sediment, and water temperatures since 1941 in an annual series of water-supply papers entitled, \"Quality of Surface Waters of the United States.\" Beginning with the 1964 water year, water-quality records also have been released by State in conjunction with stream-flow records or in a The study also includes the adjacent Coastal Plain because it is a more accessible extension of the shelf. The total study area is about 324,000 sq km, of which the shelf and slope constitute about 181,000 sq km and the Coastal Plain constitutes 143,000 sq km. The shelf width ranges from about 30 km at Cape Hatteras to about 195 km off Raritan Bay and on Georges Bank. Analyses of bottom samples make it possible to construct a preliminary geologic map of the shelf and slope to a water depth of 2,000 m. The oldest beds cropping out in the submarine canyons and on the slope are of early Late Cretaceous age. Beds of Early Cretaceous and Jurassic age are present in deep wells onshore and probably are present beneath the shelf in the area of this study. Such beds are reported beneath the Scotian Shelf to the northeast where they include limestone, salt, and anhydrite. Preliminary conclusions suggest a considerably thicker Mesozoic sedimentary sequence than has been previously described. Stress changes and local stress concentrations produced by mining under these conditions often cause sudden and violent ruptures in the coal and surrounding rock mass. The strain energy released by this type of failure, which can produce shock waves and may discharge coal and rock with explosive force, is often a serious threat to life and property. These releases of strain energy are called bumps or bounces by miners if they occur in the coal, and rock bursts if they occur in the surrounding rock mass. Many of these releases are so violent that they generate seismic waves that can be felt, or at least detected by seismic instruments, miles from the site of the rupture, whereas others are smaller and can be detected only by those sensitive seismic instruments within a few thousand feet of the site of the rupture. \r\n\r\nIn 1969 and 1970, about 27,000 and about 15,000 earth tremors, respectively, were recorded by the five-station seismic monitoring network that is located at the surface and encompasses most of the mine workings in the district. Of these totals, 512 and 524 earth tremors, respectively, were of sufficient magnitude (greater than 1. 5 on the Richter scale) so that the hypocenters could be accurately located. In 1968 about 20,000 tremors were recorded, with 281 large enough to plot, but in 1967 over 50,000 were recorded, of which 540 were plotted. \r\n\r\nIn this report we discuss the way in which seismic activity, geology, and mining are related or seem to be related for the period 1967 through 1970, with emphasis on the period 1969-70. We also suggest certain mining procedures which, based on studies during the period, might increase the safety and efficiency of mining operations in the Sunnyside district. A complete tabulation of the larger magnitude earth tremors which occurred during 1969-70 and descriptions of how they relate to mining are given in the appendix. This monitoring network would provide continuous transmission of water-quality data to the office of the water manager.</p>\n<p>Level I operations at a proposed site would monitor current and potential problems, water-quality changes in subreaches of streams, and water-quality trends in time and place. Level II operations would monitor current or potential problems only. An optimum system would require Level I operations at all nine stations. Mean velocity and mean depth data, which are necessary for the computation, have been extracted from discharge measurements made at gaging stations throughout the State. The computed k<sub><span>2</span></sub> values have been related to channel slopes obtained from topographic maps. Regression equations have been derived that express the relation of k<sub>2</sub> to slope for streams at mean flow, median flow, 7-day 2-year low flow, and 7-day 10-year low flow. The equations indicate that an increase in channel slope or a decrease in streamflow increases k<sub>2</sub>.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
