Data on the quality of surface water (chemical, temperature, and sediment) were collected from designated sampling sites at predetermined intervals such as once daily, weekly, monthly or less frequently. At some sites water-temperature data were recorded on charts by recorders. Data are given for 138 sampling stations of which 112 are continuous-record stations and 26 are miscellaneous sites. Chemical analyses also are given for 127 ground-water sites. Locations of surface water-quality stations are shown in figure 1 and locations of ground-water sites are shown in figure 2. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Suryey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Wyoming. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey under the direction of Robert L. Cushman, district chief. The method of free-flow electrophoresis obviates, the problem of adsorption upon a supporting medium and permits the use of high potential gradients and currents because of an efficient cooling system. Separations were monitored by determining organic carbon concentration with a dissolved carbon analyzer, and color was measured by absorbance at 400 nanometers. Organic materials from waters and soils were purified by filtration, hydrogen exchange, and dialysis and were concentrated by freeze drying or freeze concentration. In electrophoretic fractionations of natural organic materials typically found in surface waters and soils, color was found to increase with the charge of the fraction.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. The basin ranges in altitude from about 340 to </span><span>9,000 feet, and receives annual precipitation ranging from </span><span>more than 150 inches in the mountains to less than 10 inches </span><span>at the lower altitudes. A good vegetative cover is sustained </span><span>in the mountains by the high precipitation, whereas vegeta</span><span>tion is sparse in the lower semiarid parts of the basin.</span></p><p><span>In the mountainous areas snowmelt runoff transports most of the sediment during April through June. In the semiarid parts of the basin, little runoff occurs during most years, and most of the sediment is transported when heavy, warm rains fall on extensive accumulations of snow. During the 1970 and 1971 water years, the measured suspended-sediment concentrations in the upper Columbia River basin ranged from less than 1 milligram per liter in many streams to more than 200,000 milligrams per liter in Providence Coulee. The estimated long-term annual suspended-sediment yields range from less than 10 tons per square mile in many basins to more than 500 tons per square mile in Providence Coulee. </span></p><p><span>Man's activities have caused only a slight increase in the magnitude of the sediment discharge to the Columbia River. Although cultivation has initiated a large increase in erosion on the Columbia Plateau, and winds there move some of the loosened or easily eroded soils to depressions and runoff channels, sediment transport by streams has not increased greatly. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey under the direction of John R. George, district chief. These data represent the Georgia portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies.</p><p>Through September 30, 1960, the records of discharge and stage of streams and contents and stage of lakes or reservoirs were published in an annual series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled, \"Surface Water Supply of the United States.\"</p><p>Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports by State. Distribution of these reports is limited; they are designed primarily for rapid release of data shortly after the end of the water year to meet local needs. The streamflow records for 1961-65 are published in the Geological Survey water-supply paper series entitled, \"Surface Water Supply of the United States, 1961-65\", and those for 1966-70 will be published in a similar series.</p><p>The Geological Survey has published records of chemical quality, suspended sediment, and water temperatures since 1941 in an annual series of water-supply papers entitled, \"Quality of Surface Waters of the United States.\" Beginning with the 1964 water year, water-quality records also have been released by State in conjunction with stream-flow records or in a The model utilizes a mixed-integer mathematical program to identify a minimum present cost set of water resources projects (diversions, reservoirs, ground-water fields, desalinization plants, water treatment plants, and inter-basin transfers of water) which will meet a set of future water demands and to determine their sequence of construction.
