About 1,150 square miles lie in the United States and 910 square miles in Canada. This report deals only with that portion within the United States, except for a detailed analysis of low flow characteristics of tributary streams.</p>\n<p>Most of the area is within Roseau County, but small portions are in Marshall, Beltrami, Lake of the Woods, and Kittson Counties. Most of the watershed has little relief, and lies entirely within the plain of former Glacial Lake Agassiz. However, the flat topography of this lake washed till plain is broken by beach ridges in its southwestern part and Beltrami Island, a topographic high underlain by sand, in tis southeastern part.</p>\n<p>Population within the watershed is about 8000. The town of Roseau, the largest community, has a population of 2146 (1960).</p>\n<p>The watershed has an agricultural economy. Spring wheat, oats, and bluegrass seed are the three most important crops in the area, but many other small grains, legumes, and grasses are also grown. Dairy farming and sheep raising are the most important types of livestock production and for many farms stock is the major sources of income.</p>\n<p>Large areas of the watershed are peat lands, covered with shrubs, marsh grasslands, and spruce, tamarack, and cedar trees. Forest vegetation in the remainder of the area is largely aspen, but oak is common on the beach ridges and jack pine is common on Beltrami Island.</p>\n<p>Outdoor recreation in the area is primarily hunting of deer, small game, and waterfowl.</p>\n<p>This report is a general appraisal of the water resources in the Roseau River watershed unit. The flat lake plain which extends 15 to 20 miles east of the Red River of the North is extensively cultivated for small grains and sugar beets. The gently undulating till plain is cultivated largely for small grains and hay. The areas not under cultivation support a forest of poplar with some maple and oak. Oak is the predominate tree on the sandy ridges. The large peat areas are covered with brush and marsh grasslands. Outdoor recreational facilities in the watershed consist principally of the Lake Bronson Park, water-fowl hunting in the extensive marshlands, and deer and small game hunting in the forested The map and flood data were prepared to aid those concerned with, and responsible for, the safe and yet extensive use of the floodplain along White Rock Creek and its tributaries. The flood map is shown in two parts&mdash;A, north half, and B, south half.</p>\n<p>The map shows areas inundated by the flood of September 21, 1964, along White Rock Creek and Spanky Branch and by the flood of October 8, 1962, along Cottonwood Creek and Floyd Branch.</p>\n<p>The flood of September 21, 1964, is known to be the greatest since at least 1886 on White Rock Creek upstream from the Texas and Pacific Railroad (mile 6.6). Downstream from the Texas and Pacific Railroad, White Rock Creek has been subject to inundation from backwater from the Trinity River. The greatest known flood on Trinity River occurred May 25, 1908. Because of extensive flood-control works built since 1908 in the upper Trinity River basin, the degree of flooding resulting from a storm of the magnitude of the 1908 catastrophe probably would be substantially different today. No backwater from Trinity River occurred during the flood of September 21, 1964.</p>\n<p>The greatest flood since at least 1892 on Cottonwood Creek and Floyd Branch occurred June 14, 1949. The storm of October 8, 1962, caused flood heights at Forest Lane to be comparable to those of June 14, 1949, on Cottonwood Creek and about 1 foot lower on Floyd Branch. The greatest flood since at least 1917 on Spanky Branch was that of September 21, 1964. The \r\ndrill, site is located in the Piceance Creek basin, Rio Blanco County, \r\nColorado. From ground surface the drill hole penetrated 1,120 feet \r\nof the Evacuation Creek Member and 1,094 feet of oil shale in the \r\nParachute Creek Member of the Green River Formation. Oil shale \r\nyielding more than 20 gallons per ton occurs between 1,260-2,214 feet \r\nin depth. A gas explosion near the bottom of the hole resulted in \r\nabandonment of the exploratory hole which was still in oil shale. \r\nThe top of the nahcolite zone is at 1,693 feet. Below this depth \r\nthe core contains common to abundant amounts of sodium bicarbonate \r\nsalt intermixed with oil shale. The core is divided into seven \r\nstructural zones that reflect changes in joint intensity, core loss \r\nand broken core due to natural causes. The zone of poor core \r\nrecovery is in the Interval between 1,300-1,450 feet. \r\n\r\nResults of preliminary geophysical log analyses indicate that \r\noil yields determined by Fischer assay compare favorably with yields \r\ndetermined by geophysical log analyses. There is strong evidence \r\nthat analyses of complete core data from Colorado core holes No. 1 \r\nand No. 2 reveal a reliable relationship between geophysical log \r\nresponse and oil yield. \r\n\r\nThe quality of the logs is poor in the rich shale section and \r\nthe possibility of repeating the logging program should be considered. \r\n\r\nObservations during drilling, coring, and hydrologic testing \r\nof USBM/AEC Colorado core hole No. 2 reveal that the Parachute Creek \r\nMember of the Green River Formation is the principal aquifer water in the Parachute Creek Member is under artesian pressure. \r\n\r\nThe upper part of the aquifer has a higher hydrostatic head than, \r\nand is hydrologically separated from the lower part of the aquifer. \r\nThe transmissibility of the aquifer is about 3500 gpd per foot. The \r\nmaximum water yield of the core hole during testing was about 500 gpm. \r\nChemical analyses of water samples indicate that the content of \r\ndissolved solids is low, the principal ions being sodium and bicarbonate. Although the hole was originally cored, to a depth of \r\n2,214 feet, ,the present depth is about 2,100 feet. \r\n\r\nThis report presents a preliminary evaluation of core examination, \r\ngeophysical log interpretation and hydrological tests from the \r\nUSBM/AEC Colorado core hole No. 2.
