Potable and near-potable water is obtained from 12 wells in this area that tap sand and gravel, and the wells are capable of yielding 1,000 gallons per minute or more. \r\n\r\nStallion Range Center, a military installation on the White Sands Missile Range, about 15 miles east of =he waterfowl refuge, needs about 100,000 gallons per day of potable water. Potable water in large quantities is not known to be available at a location closer to the Center than the refuge area.\r\n\r\nThe Fish and Wildlife Service, which operates the waterfowl refuge, gave permission to White Sands Missile Range to test drill and to develop a supply well in certain areas along the Rio Grande outside the managed lands of the refuge. The U.S. Geological Survey was then asked by White Sands Missile Range to choose locations for test drilling and to monitor drilling and testing of the wells. \r\n\r\nBetween 1963 and 1967 test wells were drilled and a suitable location for a supply well as found. The well would be about 250 feet deep and would tap a body of potable water that is about 100 feet in thickness and is thought to underlie an area of at least 5 square miles.\r\n\r\nThis report contains diagrammatic sections that show the lateral and vertical relation of waters of different quality along the Rio Grande in a part of the Bosque del Apache Grant. Basic data are given in tables; they include records of 7 test wells and 12 high-yield supply wells, and 52 chemical analyses of ground water from the wells.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr6863","usgsCitation":"Cooper, J., 1968, Ground-water exploration in the Bosque del Apache Grant, Socorro County, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 68-63, 79 leaves : ill., maps ; 30 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6863.","productDescription":"79 leaves : ill., maps ; 30 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":114673,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0063/plate-figure_3.pdf","size":"4267","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":114674,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0063/plate-figure_4.pdf","size":"2579","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":114675,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0063/plate-figure_6.pdf","size":"2641","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":114676,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0063/plate-figure_7.pdf","size":"2652","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":177574,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0063/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":87477,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0063/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aafe4b07f02db66ce1e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cooper, James B.","contributorId":94367,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cooper","given":"James B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":247866,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It is also useful in monitoring the hydrologic regimen of an area to detect possible changes. Color aerial photography is generally superior to black-and-white photography for these water resources investigations. Depth penetration through water, and excellent discrimination of water indicators, such as vegetation, are its -main assets. Meaningful interpretation of the photography depends on adequate ground control data. Experiences of the Water Resources Division, U. S. The flow patterns indicate numerous zones of ground-water recharge and discharge controlled by topography, varying thicknesses of geologic units, variation in permeabilities, and the configuration of the basement rock surface. Variations in streamflow along a reach of the Yellow Medicine River agree with the subsurface flow system. Increases and decreases in runoff per square mile correspond, apparently, to ground-water discharge and recharge zones. Ground-water quality variations between calcium sulfate waters typical of the Quaternary drift and sodium chloride waters typical of the Cretaceous rocks are caused by mixing of the two water types. The zones of mixing are in agreement with ground-water flow patterns along the hydrologic section.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/WR004i004p00769","usgsCitation":"Van Voast, W.A., and Novitzki, R., 1968, Ground-water flow related to streamflow and water quality: Water Resources Research, v. 4, no. 4, p. 769-775, https://doi.org/10.1029/WR004i004p00769.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"769","endPage":"775","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":392,"text":"Minnesota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":326403,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"4","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2010-07-09","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"57ada1c7e4b0f412a62dfa7a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Van Voast, Wayne A.","contributorId":91846,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Van Voast","given":"Wayne","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":645256,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Novitzki, R.P.","contributorId":73986,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Novitzki","given":"R.P.","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":645257,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Data are available for three small partly reforested areas and for one non‐reforested control area. Intensive statistical analyses of the data from the four study areas were made&nbsp;</span>in<span>&nbsp;1958. It was determined at that time that significant reductions&nbsp;</span>in<span>&nbsp;total runoff had occurred which were attributed to increases&nbsp;</span>in<span>&nbsp;interception and transpiration. Reductions&nbsp;</span>in<span>&nbsp;peak discharges during the dormant season also were indicated which were attributed to increased interception and sublimation of snowfall, and gradual desynchronization of snowmelt runoff from the wooded and open areas of partly reforested watersheds. Updating of the studies relating to peak discharges was completed&nbsp;</span>in<span>&nbsp;1967 and indicated that no further changes&nbsp;</span>in<span>&nbsp;relative peaks had taken place since 1958. This was more than one‐sixth of the national withdrawal of&nbsp;</span>water<span>. On the basis of past rates of increase, a much greater future use of&nbsp;</span>ground<span>&nbsp;</span>water<span>&nbsp;is suggested. Our annual investment&nbsp;</span>in<span>&nbsp;</span>water<span>&nbsp;wells is one‐half to three‐quarter billion dollars, not including pumps and plumbing.&nbsp;</span>In<span>&nbsp;1964 approximately 436,000 new wells were drilled; however, less than 1 percent of these wells were logged by any geophysical means. The application of _ge_o.phy.sical&nbsp;</span>well<span>&nbsp;</span>logging<span>&nbsp;to&nbsp;</span>ground‐water<span>&nbsp;</span>hydrology<span>&nbsp;is comparable to its use&nbsp;</span>in<span>&nbsp;petroleum exploration&nbsp;</span>in<span>&nbsp;the 1930's; however, we can take advantage of equipment and interpretation techniques developed&nbsp;</span>in<span>&nbsp;the oil industry that are available now for use&nbsp;</span>in<span>&nbsp;</span>ground‐water<span>&nbsp;investigations. Although most petroleum&nbsp;</span>well<span>&nbsp;</span>logging<span>&nbsp;techniques may be utilized&nbsp;</span>in<span>&nbsp;</span>hydrology<span>; modifications&nbsp;</span>in<span>&nbsp;equipment and interpretation are necessary because of basic economic and environmental differences between petroleum and&nbsp;</span>ground‐water<span>&nbsp;evaluation. If&nbsp;</span>logging<span>&nbsp;is to be widely applied to&nbsp;</span>ground‐water<span>&nbsp;exploration and evaluation, the expense of equipment and services must be reduced. Fortunately, this can be accomplished, because most&nbsp;</span>water<span>&nbsp;wells are not as deep as oil wells and the temperatures and pressures are lower. The&nbsp;</span>Water<span>&nbsp;Resources Division of the U. S. Geological Survey is conducting research on the application of borehole geophysics to&nbsp;</span>ground‐water<span>&nbsp;</span>hydrology<span>. The following&nbsp;</span>logging<span>&nbsp;devices are utilized&nbsp;</span>in<span>&nbsp;the evaluation of&nbsp;</span>ground‐water<span>&nbsp;environments: spontaneous potential, resistivity, gamma, gamma‐gamma, neutron, radioactive tracer, flowmeter, caliper, fluid resistivity, gradient and differential temperature, and sonic velocity. Lightweight&nbsp;</span>logging<span>&nbsp;sondes and control modules are operated by one man, either on a vehicle‐mounted 6,000‐foot logger or on a suitcase‐mounted 500‐foot logger. An inexpensive magnetic tape system has been developed and is used routinely for log recording and playback. If commercial&nbsp;</span>well<span>&nbsp;</span>logging<span>&nbsp;service is to be widely used&nbsp;</span>in<span>&nbsp;</span>ground‐water<span>&nbsp;exploration and development,&nbsp;</span>water<span>&nbsp;</span>well<span>&nbsp;contractors, and State and municipal agencies must be educated on the advantages of obtaining more information from each hole drilled. It will be necessary also to demonstrate how&nbsp;</span>well<span>&nbsp;</span>logging<span>&nbsp;can provide much of this information.&nbsp;</span>In<span>&nbsp;addition, the&nbsp;</span>well<span>&nbsp;</span>logging<span>&nbsp;industry must adapt their equipment and services to the requirements of&nbsp;</span>ground‐water<span>&nbsp;</span>hydrology<span>. The need for additional&nbsp;</span>logging<span>&nbsp;capability&nbsp;</span>in<span>&nbsp;this field exists at the present time and is expected to increase. Hopefully industry will be able to fill the gap.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"NGWA The Groundwater Association","doi":"10.1111/j.1745-6584.1968.tb01630.x","usgsCitation":"Keys, W., 1968, Well logging in ground‐water hydrology: Groundwater, v. 6, no. 1, p. 10-18, https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1745-6584.1968.tb01630.x.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"10","endPage":"18","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":386438,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"6","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2006-07-06","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Keys, W.S.","contributorId":75126,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Keys","given":"W.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":817451,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It follows similar studies of the Guanica, Guayanilla-Yauco, Tallaboa Valley, and Ponce areas to the west and the Jobos area to the east. It basically is an inventory of the water resources during one year. To this extent it carries no long-term information; however, as rainfall data is available for 50 years or so at some sites within the study area, we can make a qualitative estimate of the water resources under more extreme conditions.
