A spectrophotometric study was made of the thoriummorin reaction to evaluate the suitability of morin as a reagent for the determination of trace amounts of thorium. At pH 2, the equilibrium constant for the reaction is 1 x 106, and a single complex having a thorium-morin ratio of 1 to 2 is formed. The complex shows maximum absorbance at a wave length of 410 mμ, and its absorbance obeys Beer's law. The absorbance readings are highly reproducible, and the sensitivity is relatively high, an absorbance difference of 0.001 being equivalent to 0.007 γ of ThO2 per sq. cm. The effects of acid, alcohol, and morin concentration, time, temperature, and age of the morin reagent as well as the behavior of morin with zirconium(IV), iron(III), aluminum(III), ytterbium(III), yttrium(III), uranium(VI), praseodymium(III), lead(II), lanthanum(III), and calcium(II) ions are discussed. A method is presented for the determination of thorium in pure solutions. Appropriate separations for the isolation of thorium may extend the usefulness of the method and permit the determination of trace amounts of thorium in complex materials.

Three tartaric acid-thoron systems, developed for the determination of thorium, differ with respect to the concentrations of thoron and tartaric acid. Mesotartaric acid, used in one of the systems, is most effective in masking zirconium. Kidney disease is one of the most puzzling fish diseases known to exist in the United States. In less than Io years it has invaded the Pacific Northwest, exacting a heavy toll of hatchery salmon. Its first appearance apparently was in Massachusetts where Belding and Merrill' described a disease similar to that now seen on the Pacific Coast. In I946 it was diagnosed in Washington2 and since that time has been observed in an ever increasing number of hatcheries. There are unpublished reports of the same or similar diseases in both California and Washington in the early I93o's.3 The latest outbreaks occurred in the Federal hatcheries at Berlin, New Hampshire, and Cortland, New York, in brook, brown, and rainbow trout.4 There is evidence to indicate that the disease may be much more widely spread in New York State.5 The disease is especially dangerous since little is known of the origin or source of the causative agent. Indeed, the classification of the diplobacillus associated with kidney disease is still uncertain. Thus, with our present knowledge, it is difficult or impossible to eradicate the malady from an infected hatchery. Histopathologic studies were undertaken to clarify the pathology of the disease and to compare the eastern form with the western form.

Also replacement of -NO2 by -F in substituted nitrobenzenes was studied in DMF. Mycoses of systemic distribution are rarely observed in fresh-water fish in this country. In a recent review of atypical cell growths in fishes, Nigrelli cited the only known instance of a mycetoma in a North American fresh-water fish which occurred in the head of fingerling landlocked salmon from an Idaho hatchery. The fungus associated with this granuloma was characterized by a branching septate mycelium. Rucker reported a streptomycete which was pathogenic to blueblack salmon. This organism produced internal nodules containing masses of hyphae but no inflammatory response. A pathogenic fungus has been observed frequently in marine fish, however, and in both marine and fresh-water fish in Europe. This organism was tentatively classified as a Phycomycete in or near the order Chytridiales and was assigned to the genus and species Ichthyophonus hoferi, later reclassified as Ichthyosporidium hoferi. The graduloma described in this report occurs in fresh-water trout and is apparently caused by a budding, yeast-like form with no hyphae which evokes a tremendous inflammatory reaction. Morphologically, the organism does not resemble the previously described Ichthyosporidium. The lesions were first seen accidentally in sections prepared from a diplobacillus infection of brook trout termed “kidney disease.” Subsequently, the granuloma was observed in three widely separated infections involving the diplobacillus in each instance.
The histological material was received in a fixed condition; thus, no cultural data was available and the nomenclature and classification of the mycotic organism were not attempted. The present distribution of the disease, however, with its potential threat to domestic fish populations, seemed to warrant a description and discussion of the disease. Efforts are in progress to culture the organism.

Since 1947, the U.S. Geological Survey has measured and sampled phosphatic parts of the Permian Phosphoria formation and its partial stratigraphic correlatives at many localities in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and Utah.  Preliminary data on the thickness of the beds and their composition at localities sampled prior to 1952 have been issued already in TEI-183, 184, 185, 186, 187, 188, 360, 361, 362, 363, 364, 365, 375, 376, 377, and 378. This report presents similar data on the localitites sampled in 1953 and 1954 (figs. 1, 2, and 3).  The field and laboratory procedures adopted in these investigations are described in a previous report (McKelvey and others 1953a).

The Peerless pegmatite, half a mile south of Keystone, Pennington County, S. Dak., has been a large source of scrap mica and beryl. Feldspar, amblygonite, tantalite-columbite, and cassiterite also have been recovered.

The pegmatite is intrusive into Precambrian quartz-mica schist. Much of the schist contains staurolite and chlorite. Staurolite has been partly altered to mica, quartz, and chlorite, especially near pegmatite contacts. The pegmatite is generally discordant with the schist, but in many places secondary schistosity has been developed parallel to the contact. Tourmaline and muscovite, presumably introduced by pegmatitic solutions, are characteristic of the wall rock near discordant contacts.

\n

At the surface the pegmatite is tadpole-shaped and is 580 feet long and 360 feet wide. In cross-section the pegmatite has an anticlinal form that suggests control of the intrusion by fractures bearing N. 30°W. and dipping 45°NE. and SW. Dike-like apophyses extending from the main pegmatite have various attitudes.

\n

The Peerless pegmatite is a complex pegmatite consisting of seven zones, two replacement units, and two types of fracture-fillings. These are: Zone 1, quartz-muscovite-plagioclase pegmatite (border zone); Zone 2, albite-quartz-muscovite pegmatite (wall zone); Zone 3, cleavelandite-quartz-muscovite pegmatite (first intermediate zone); Zone 4, perthite-cleavelandite-quartz pegmatite (second intermediate zone); Zone 5, clevelandite-quartz pegmatite (third intermediate zone); Zones 6a and b, quartz-microcline pegmatite and quartz pegmatite (fourth intermediate zone); Zone 7, lithia mica-cleavelandite pegmatite (core); lithia mica-cleavelandite-quartz replacement unit; muscovite-cleavelandite replacement unit; quartz fracture-fillings; and tourmaline-quartz fracture-fillings.

Zones 1 and 2 consist of alternating layers of different texture and mineralogy that are parallel to the contact.  The layers contain differing proportions of quartz, plagioclase, muscovite, perthite, and accessory minerals. Sugary albite-quartz aggregates are important constituents of some layers. Layers of similar composition may occur two, three, or perhaps more times. The overall mineralogic composition of Zones 1 and 2 is similar to the composition of wall zones in many other Black Hills pegmatite, Zones 3 to 7 are in the normal sequence of zones in Black Hills pegmatites.

\n

The structural, textural, and mineralogic data confirm previously published evidence from other Black Hills pegmatites that indicates crystallization of a magma-like fluid from the wall inward. Repetition of layers in Zones 1 and 2 indicates changes in composition of the fluid at the crystallizing face. These changes may have been caused by addition of new material from below, by loss of material to the wall rocks, or by failure of convection to maintain equilibrium throughout the fluid in the pegmatite chamber.  Zone 3 to 7 are in the normal sequence of zoned pegmatites that indicates crystallization from a restricted or nearly closed system. The lithia mica-cleavelandite replacement unit, which extends outward from the core, shows that in, the very late stages of crystallization a pneumatolytic or hydrothermal fluid escaped outward and replaced previously crystallized pegmatite.

\n

Accessory minerals of the pegmatite include tourmaline, beryl, apatite, amblygonite (variety, montebrasite), lithia mica, cassiterite, tantalite-columbite, garnet, spodumene, svanbergite, loellingite (?), vivianite (?), triploidite (?), dahllite, and vari-colored phosphate minerals of the lithiophilitetriphylite group and their alteration products.

\n

The chemical composition of the pegmatite has been determined by estimating the mineral, constitution of the various units and by calculating the tonnage of these units by use of successive geologic sections.  The principal constituents are: SiO2 (77.0 percent), Al2O3 (13.7 percent), Na2O (5.0 percent), and K2O (1.7 percent).

\n

Chemical composition has also been determined for four subdivisions of the pegmatite: (A) Zones 1 and 2, (B) Zones 3 and 4, (C) Zone 5, and (D) Zones 6 and 7 and the replacement units. The content of Si02 increases and the content of Al2O3 decreases from the outer pan of the pegmatite inward. Na2O forms only 0.4 percent of the inner subdivision (D), but 4 .7 to 6.5 percent of the other subdivisions.  K2O forms 4.0 percent of subdivision (B), but only 0.7 to 1.3 percent of the other subdivisions.

\n

Zone 3, the principal minable unit, contains 1. 7 percent beryl and 28 percent scrap mica. Beryl also constitutes more than 1 percent of parts of the wall zone, especially albite-rich layers of the inner part of the unit in the upper part of the pegmatite. Beryl is a less important constituent of other units of the pegmatite.

\n

Potash feldspar is mined chiefly from Zone 4.  Clevelandite that can be hand-cobbed and sold as soda-feldspar occurs in Zones 3, 4, and 5. Amblygomlte forms between 0.5 and 1.0 percent of Zone 5.

\n

Reserves of beryl, scrap mica, potash feldspar, and amblygonite are one to six times past production.

The increasing numbers of these problems have led to widespread speculation as to the adequacy of the Nation' s water supplies.

Manatee County, Florida","docAbstract":"Manatee County comprises an area of about 800 square miles adjacent to the Gulf of Mexico in the southwestern part of the Florida peninsula. The county is underlain at depths ranging from about 200 to 350 feet by a series of limestone formations of Tertiary age having a total thickness of several thousand feet. The upper part of the limestone section consists of the Ocala group of Eocene age, the Suwannee limestone of Oligocene age, and the Tampa formation of early Miocene age. These limestone formations are overlain by the Hawthorn formation of middle Miocene age which consists of interbedded clay, limestone, and sand. Although this increase in flow appears to have been temporary, there was still evidence of it in some of the streams and springs as late as June 1953, when this report was prepared. It is doubtful if the earthquake had any permanent effect on the recharge areas or on the permeability of the aquifers.
