Carnotite, sabugalite [HAI(UO2)4(PO4)4 • 16H2O] and autunite occur in the basal 25 feet of a 270-foot sequence of nonmarine bedded gypsum and gypsiferous clay in the Brule formation of Oligocene age about 12 miles northeast of Chadron in northeastern Dawes County, Nebraska. Uranium minerals are visible at only two localities and are associated with carbonaceous matter. Elsewhere the basal 25 feet of the gypsum sequence is interbedded with carbonate rocks and is weakly but persistently uraniferous. Uranium probably was emplaced from above by uranyl solutions rich in sulfate.

Ocean City, Md","docAbstract":"The distribution of dynamic pressure behind a Harris' hawk's wing was sampled using a wake rake consisting of 15 pitot tubes and one static tube. The hawk was holding on to a perch, but at an air speed and gliding angle at which it was capable of gliding. The perch was instrumented, so that the lift developed by the wing was known and the lift coefficient could be calculated. The mean of 92 estimates of profile drag coefficient was 0.0207, with standard deviation 0.0079. Lift coefficients ranged from 0.51 to 1.08. Reynolds numbers were nearly all in the range 143000-194000. The estimates of profile drag coefficient were reconcilable with previous estimates of the wing profile drag of the same bird, obtained by the subtractive method, and also with values predicted by the ?Airfoil-ii? program for designing aerofoils, based on a digitized wing profile from the ulnar region of the wing. The thickness of the wake suggested that the boundary layer was mostly or fully turbulent in most observations and separated in some, possibly as an active means of creating drag for control purposes. It appears that the bird could momentarily either increase or decrease the profile drag of specific parts of the wing, by active changes of shape, and it appeared to use the carpo-metacarpal region especially for such control movements. Chandler (1942) and Moore (1946) reported 11 o 13 raccoons (Procyon lotor) trapped in Angelina County, Texas, infected with these intestinal parasites. From 1 to 90 worms occurred in these animals. Chandler and Melvin (1951), in a study of parasites collected from mammals in Pennsylvania, reported M. ingens common in its usual host, the raccoon, and also found immature worms believed to belong to this species in skunk, Mephitis nigra; mink, Mustela vision; fox, Urocyon cineraoargenteus; and mole, Parascalops breweri. Van Cleave (1953), in a review of North American Acanthocephala, lists the definitive host as raccoon of the States of Texas and Pennsylvania. He further states: “It is thought that the apparent discontinuous distribution of M. ingens is due to incomplete records of its occurrence in intervening states.” Subsequently, Goldberg (1954) reported 5 specimens of M. ingens in one of 14 skunks from Beltsville, Md.
This parasite appears to be fairly common in raccoons from Maryland, as indicated by material from two stations in the State. Of 44 intestinal tracts collected during the winter months, 1943-1946, at the Patuxent Research Refuge, laurel, Maryland, 22 (50%) contained M. ingens in their intestines (Ediger, 1950). Numbers of these parasites per host varied from 1 to 125. Since then, additional raccoons from the Patuxent Research refuge have been found infected with M. ingens.
The parasite has also been noted in raccoons collected from the Blackwater National Wildlife refuge and surrounding areas, near Cambridge on the eastern shore of Maryland. One raccoon obtained in May, 1950, contained five specimens of M. ingens. In a series of raccoons obtained by V.T. Harris, during the winter months 1950-1951, 32 (37%) of 86 raccoons examined were infected with M. ingens. Intensity varied from 1 to 44 worms per raccoon.

If further investigations confirm that the area of greatest abundance is in the forest-tundra transition, then weather conditions and predation appear to be the major factors influencing the breeding snipe population -- habitat conditions remaining fairly stable. 4. Most of the early industries were so located that their increasing requirements for transportation, raw materials, market, labor, and water supply could be satisfied economically. Many of these original plant locations have continued as modern industrial centers and their output has increased manyfold in meeting the demands of our growing Nation. The recent and current industrial expansion and the trend toward the growth of chemical industries, many Of which are heavy users of water, has resulted in a tremendous increase in the total withdrawal of water for industrial use as well as a large increase in the per capita use of water. This increase in industrial water requirement has strained the capacity of the developed water supplies in many areas, and in some instances the adequacy of the potential water supplies is questionable.
The Geological Survey is engaged in preparing and publishing a series of reports describing the developed and undeveloped water resources of many important industrial areas. This work was started initially at the request of the National Securities Resources Board as a means to insure that water supplies are adequate for our rapidly expanding industrial development. Although many factors contribute to establishing the feasibility or even the limits of future industrial development, the one relating to available water supply is extremely important. A knowledge of the water requirements of various industries is valuable therefore in planning the logical development in any area where water supply is a critical factor. Thus far very little suitable information on the water requirements of our major industries is available for general planning. An inventory of unit water-use values in industry therefore would be generally helpful and also might tend to stimulate water-conservation methods. To obtain such information, investigations

As a part of the Geological Survey's program of investigating uranium-bearing carbonaceous rocks on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, a reconnaissance of the Sharon Springs member of the Pierre shale in western Kansas and eastern Colorado was conducted during 1954.
\nThe Sharon Springs member of the Pierre shale and its lateral equivalents ranges from 155 to about 500 feet in thickness and generally contains about 0.001 percent uranium, but some beds contain larger amounts. A 6-foot thick shale bed in Cheyenne County, Colo., contains about 0.006 percent uranium, a 4 1/2-foot thick sequence of beds in Crowley County, Colo., is estimated to contain between 0.004 and 0.005 percent uranium, and a 3 1/2-foot thick sequence of beds in Kiowa County, Colo., contains about 0.004 percent uranium. At several outcrop localities, sequences of beds as much as 9 1/2 feet thick contain about 0.003 percent uranium. Data from wells indicate that the 4 1/2-foot thick sequence of beds in Crowley County, Colo., may have a lateral extent of at least 5 1/2 miles. A gamma-ray log of a well in Yuma County, Colo., indicates the presence of a sequence of beds 66 feet thick which contains 0.005 to 0.010 percent equivalent uranium.
\nNo definite pattern of areal distribution of radioactivity and uranium content in the Sharon Springs is indicated by available data. Lateral variation in uranium content of individual beds was not noted in outcrops, which seldom extend more than 150 feet, but subsurface data from gamma-ray logs of wells indicate that both the maximum radioactivity and the thickness of radioactive beds are variable within distances of a few miles. Vertical variation in radioactivity and uranium content of the more radioactive beds is usually abrupt, but in the rocks as a whole the range of uranium content is so small that large variations in content are absent.
\nIn most of the gamma-ray logs examined there is only part of the sequence of rocks comprising the Pierre shale and Niobrara formation that exhibits radioactivity in excess of the average radioactivity of the two formations. Comparison of features of gamma-ray logs of wells in north-eastern Colorado suggests that the most radioactive part referred to above is a laterally correlatable sequence of beds.
\nThe stratigraphic position of the radioactive unit relative to the Pierre shale-Niobrara formation contact in oil industry scout reports, as identified from electric logs and wells, is variable within short distances. This may indicate that some of the Pierre-Niobrara contacts picked from electric logs may not correspond to the boundary that would be selected by examination of the rocks themselves, or may indicate that there is a facies relationship between teh lowermost part of the Pierre shale and the uppermost part of the Niobrara formation.
