Two practical problems were investigated: a municipal pumping problem and the change in flow regime due to the addition of surface-water reservoirs to the basin. Because these are demonstration exercises, the information presented is not intended to be used for construction justification. Selected frequency characteristics, based on these simulated annual peaks, are related to drainage area and percentage of impervious area. The deposits are in the Paradox Member of the Hermosa Formation. The greatest thickness of this evaporite sequence is in a troughlike depression adjacent to the Uncompahgre uplift on the northeast side of the basin.</p><p>The salt deposits consist of a cyclical sequence of thick halite units separated by thin units of black shale, dolomite, and anhydrite. Many halite units are several hundred feet thick and locally contain economically valuable potash deposits.</p><p>Over much of the Paradox basin the salt deposits occur at depths of more than 5,000 feet. Only in a series of salt anticlines located along the northeastern side of the basin do the salt deposits rise to relatively shallow depths. The salt anticlines can be divided geographically and structurally into five major systems. Each system consists of a long undulating welt of thickened salt over which younger rocks are arched in anticlinal form. Locally there are areas along the axes of the anticlines where the Paradox Member was never covered by younger sediments. This allowed large-scale migration of Paradox strata toward and up through these holes in the sediment cover forming diapiric anticlines.</p><p>The central or salt-bearing cores of the anticlines range in thickness from about 2,500 to 14,000 feet. Structure in the central core of the salt anticlines is the result of both regional-compression and flowage of the Paradox Member into the anticlines from adjacent synclines. Structure in the central cores of the salt anticlines ranges from relatively undeformed beds to complexly folded and faulted masses, in which stratigraphic continuity is undemonstrable.</p><p>The presence of thick cap rock .over many of the salt anticlines is evidence of removal of large volumes of halite by groundwater. Available geologic and hydrologic information suggests that this is a relatively slow process and that any waste-storage or disposal sites in these structures should remain dry for hundreds of thousands of years.</p><p>Trace to commercial quantities of oil and gas are found in all of the black shale-dolomite-anhydrite interbeds of the Paradox Member. These hydrocarbons constitute a definite hazard in the construction and operation of underground waste-storage or disposal facilities. However, many individual halite beds are of. sufficient thickness that a protective seal of halite can be left between the openings and the gassy beds.</p><p>A total of 12 different localities were considered to be potential waste-storage or disposal sites in the Paradox basin. Computer processing was performed by the Image Processing Laboratory (IPL) of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Processing included contrast enhancement and high-pass filtering which accentuates topographic features while subduing albedo variations. Photographic reproductions of the images were generated from the IPL digital magnetic tapes and mosaicked by the U.S. Geological Survey.</p><p>Relative horizontal placement of pictures is control led by spacecraft tracking data, with adjustment to fit the Mariner 9 control net of August, 1972 (Davies, M.E., 1972, Mariner 9 control net of Mars: August, 1972: Rand Corp ., R-1122-JPL) where possible. Individual analytical adjustment of pictures was not performed. Triangles are shown at the correct latitude and longitude of the control points identified and numbered by Davies (ibid.). Broken crosses are used to identify the images of the control points. Standard deviation of image placement discrepancy is less than 5 km. The projection is based on a theoretical dynamical ellipticity of 1/192. Data on the quality of surface water (chemical, microbiological, temperature, and sediment) were collected from designated sampling sites at predetermined intervals such as once daily, weekly, monthly, or less frequently, and at some sites data were recorded on punched paper tape at 60-minute intervals. Records are given for 72 sampling stations of which 10 are partial-record stations, and 34 are miscellaneous sites. Records of chemical analyses are given for 581 ground-water sites. Locations of surface water-quality stations are shown in Figure 1, page 2. Records for pertinent water-quality stations in bordering States are also included. The records were collected by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey under the direction of C. W. Lane, district chief. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Kansas.</p><p>The Geological Survey has published records of chemical quality, suspended sediment, and water temperatures since 1941 in annual series of water-supply papers entitled, \"Quality of Surface Waters of the United States.\" Beginning with the 1964 water year, water-quality records also have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. Distribution of these reports is limited; they are designed primarily for rapid release of data shortly after the end of the water year to meet local needs. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U. S. Geological Survey under the direction of C. W. Lane, district chief. Kansas district personnel who contributed significantly to the collection and preparation of data included in this report were: J. L. Ebling, C. 0. Geiger, K. D. Medina, L. E. Stuliken, C. 0. Distribution of these reports is limited; they are designed primarily for rapid release of data shortly after the end of the water year to meet local needs. The discharge and reservoir storage records for 1961-65 also have been published in a Geological Survey water-supply paper series entitled \"Surface Water Supply of the United States M. Culbertson, hydraulic engineer, U.S. Geological Survey, Menlo Park, Calif., and preparatory work in Alaska (during June 1-18, 1971) was done with the cooperation of Harry Hulsing, district chief, Alaska District. Examination of river crossings between the Yukon River and Prudhoe Bay was done by helicopter, for the use of which I am indebted to Giles McDonald of the Bureau of Land Management. Most of the crossing sites described here were examined in the field, in too brief a time to permit quantitative measurements but long enough to be of much assistance in interpretation of the aerial photographs. Location of the earlier photographs with reference to the terrane was difficult because of the inaccuracy of existing index sheets, but it was greatly facilitated by Ray Krieg of the R &amp; M Engineering Geological Consultants in Fairbanks and by personnel of the Alyeska Pipeline System Office in Anchorage.
