During this period. the stream-runoff pattern of the basin has been altered by constructions of Tuttle Creek and Milford Reservoirs.</p>\n<p>An analysis of data shows that the reduction of suspended sediment discharge has been significant as a result of reservoir storage. The proper design of bridges, culverts, dams, highways, levees, reservoirs, sewage-disposal systems, waterworks and all structures on the flood plains of streams requires careful consideration of flood hazards. -1- By use of relations presented in this report, the extent, depth, and frequency of flooding can be estimated for any site along the reach of the Schuylkill River from Oaks to Pottstown. These flood data are presented so that regulatory agencies, organizations, and individuals may have a technical basis for making decisions on the use of flood-prone areas. The Delaware River Basin Commission and the U. S. Geological Survey regard this program of flood-plain-inundation studies as a positive step toward flood-damage prevention. Flood-plaininundation studies are a prerequisite to flood-plain management which may include a mixture of flood-control structures and/or land-use regulations. Both physical works and flood-plain regulations are included in the Comprehensive Plan for development of the Delaware River basin, of which the Schuylkill River is a part. Recommendations for land use, or suggestions for limitations of land use, are not made herein. Other reports on use and regulation of land in flood-prone areas are available (Dola, 1961; White, 1961; American Society of Civil Engineers Task Force on Flood Plain Regulations, 1962; and Goddard, 1963). The subwatershed receives runoff from approximately 5 percent of the total area of the watershed.</p>\n<p>Most precipitation falling on subwatershed No. 5 does not flow through the reservoir. During this study approximately three-fourths (47,000 acre-feet) of the precipitation was lost by evaporation and transpiration; a small amount is lost by deep subsurface percolation.</p>\n<p>Fifty-nine percent of the total sediment load was discharged from the reservoir during four major outflow periods representing 34 percent of the outflow days. The highest percentage of runoff and sediment yield occurs from March through June. Fifty-three percent of the water discharged and 63 percent of the sediment yield occurred during this 4-month period. The average annual yield of fluvial sediment from watershed No. 5 was 607 tons per square mile, or 0.95 ton per acre.</p>\n<p>A total of 21,370 tons of fluvial sediment was transported into reservoir No. 5 and a total of 19,930 tons was deposited. Seventy-eight percent of the total fluvial sediment was deposited during the first 9.2 years, or 63 percent of time of reservoir operation. The eastern half of the quadrangle is a great desert, partly blanketed by sand dunes, but&nbsp; mostly an area of badlands multicolored cliffs and benches of virtually barren rock, and deeply incised canyons. In the west half of the quadrangle, rugged tree-covered foothills flank high forested plateaus rimmed by cliffs. On these High Plateaus, dense coniferous forest is interspersed with wide grassy parks, grazed in summer by sheep and cattle. However, concentrations of these metals in streamflow in the vicinity of the Huntsville municipal water intake during June, August, and September 1971 did not exceed the limits recommended for a public drinking water supply. The occurrence of these metals in general is related to man's activities. \r\n\r\nInformation gained during this study suggests that cadmium and the other metals are associated with and transported with suspended sediment, bed material, and airborne dust particles. Lead and zinc were the most abundant of the selected metals in streamflow, bed material, and rainwater samples. Well production in the high-yield area is mainly from the Newburg zone, a permeable stratum in the lower part of the Bass Island group. A ' structure contour map on the top of the Lockport Dolomite shows that the Newburg zone conforms to the configuration of the Cincinnati arch. The chemical quality of the water in the consolidated-rock aquifers is intimately related to the regional flow system, and undergoes a progressive change from a calcium bicarbonate-type in recharge Water on the earth is about 97 percent in the seas, 2 percent in glacier ice, principally Greenland and Antarctica. Man is left with less than 1 percent as liquid fresh water to sustain his needs. This is possible under good management because water moves cyclically. Conjunctive use of surface and ground water is advocated, as is reuse of wastewater. Water needs for domestic and light industrial use can be reasonably forecast for planning purposes. Heavy-industry needs must be determined on a site-by-site basis.</p>\n<p>The units commonly used by hydrologists with respect to quantities and quality of water are denned; their significance in water management is outlined, and metric-english equivalents are given for many. Selected frequency characteristics, based on these simulated annual peaks, are related to drainage area and percentage of impervious area. Annual fluvial-sediment discharge from the conterminous United States averages 491,449,600 short tons, of which 14,204,000 is discharged to the Atlantic Ocean, 378,179,000 to the Gulf of Mexico, and 99,066,600 to the Pacific Ocean. Data from 27 drainage areas were used to estimate the average annual discharge, yield, and concentration of fluvial sediment.
