Thoron is popularly used for the spectrophotometric determination of thorium.  An undesirable feature of its use is the high sensitivity of the reagent toward zirconium. This study describes the use of tartaric acid as a masking reagent for zirconium. Three tartaric acid-thoron systems, developed for the determination of thorium, differ with respect to the concentrations of thoron and tartaric acid. Mesotataric acid, used in one of the systems, is found to be most effective in masking zirconium. The behavior of various rarer elements, usually found associated with thorium ores, is determined in two of the systems, and a dilution method is described for the direct determination of thorium in monazite concentrates.

Five samples of purple fluorite found in association with radioactive, materials, and a synthetic colorless control sample were studied and compared.  Before and after heating, observations were made on specific gravity, index of refraction, unit-cell size, breadth of X-ray diffraction lines, and fluorescence.  The purple samples became colorless on heating above 175° C.  During the process, observations were made on color, thermoluminescence, and differential thermal analysis curves.  There were strong correlations between the various physical properties, and it was found possible to arrange the samples in order of increasing difference in their physical properties from the control sample. This order apparently represents increasing structural damage by radiation; if so, it correlates with decreasing specific gravity, increasing index of refraction, broadening of X-ray lines, and increasingly strong exothermic reactions on annealing. The differences between the samples in index of refraction and X-ray pattern are largely eliminated on annealing.  Annealing begins at 1750 C; thermoluminescence at lower temperatures is due to electrons escaping from the metastable potential traps, not the destruction of those traps which takes place on annealing.

These veins occupy shear zones along which there is no evidence of large-scale lateral displacement. The wall rock adjacent to the veins is intensely silicified and sencitized quartz monzonite and granodiortte. The veins have yielded substantial quantities of lead, silver, zinc, and gold. The silver-lead veins consist principal1y of galena, spha1erite, tetrahedrite, cha1copyrite and pyrite in a gangue of light to dark gray quartz, altered rock, gouge, and subordinate chalcedony and carbonate minerals. No anomalous radioactivity nor uranium minerals have been found in similar veins in pre-batholithic rocks of the area.\r\n\r\nChalcedony veins and vein zones, some of which are ttraniferous, are distinctly different from the silver-lead veins and, with a single except1on, are known only in the batholith. The chalcedony vein zones consist of one or more discontinuous stringers or veins of cha1cedony and microcrystalline quartz in silicified and sericitized quartz monzonite and granodiorite, and in less strongly altered alaskite. On1y small amounts of silver ore have been produced from these chalcedony veins and vein zones.\r\n \r\nAll of the veins are ear1y Tertiary in age, but the silver-lead veins probably are older than the chalcedony veins. Uranium is closely associated with chalcedory and microcrystalline quartz in both types of veins. This association suggests that all of the uranium in the area is of the same age. The uranium is in tuffs and tuffaceous shales and particularly in beds rich in organic matter. Carnotite(?) was identified from three localities, principally coating fractures but in places part replacing organic material, and anomalous radioactivity without recognizable uranium minerals has been detected at four localities. Six of the seven localities are at approximately the same stratigraphic horizon. The deposits are virtually unexplored and consequently their size and grade are not known. This report is a statement of progress during the six-months period from June 1 to November 30, 1955 on investigations of radioactive materials in the United States and Alaska, undertaken by the U.S. Geological Survey under the sponsorship of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.

During the period the Geological Survey's program has been\ndirected to an increasing extent toward the understanding of geologic conditions favorable for the concentration of uranium, rather than the search for minable deposits as such. This shift in emphasis\nis reflected in the decreased amount of exploration drilling during\nthe period, and the accompanying increase in geologic programs of a\nlong-range nature.

The program is now directed toward a comprehensive understanding\nof the many factors involved in uranium geology, and the publication\nof reports that will make available information on all phases of the\nuranium program. Many investigations have progressed to the point\nwhere final reports are in preparation for future publication with the\npermission of the Atomic Energy Commission; for other investigations of\na continuing nature it will be several years before final reports can\nbe prepared. Formal publications (as distinguished from administrative\nTrace Elements Reports) published during the period include 10 Geological\nSurvey Bulletins or Bulletin Chapters; 116 Geological Survey maps; 15\nreports published in scientific journals; seven Trace Elements Reports\nsent to the Technical Information Service of the Atomic Energy Commission\nfor distribution and sale to the public; and four Trace Elements\nreports placed on open file. In addition, a large number •of papers by\ngeologists in the program were presented before scientific societies,\nand the 61 papers prepared for the United Nations International Conference\n.on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy during the preceding report\nperiod were published by the United Nations.
