In eastern Utah, northeastern Arizona, northwestern \r\nNew Mexico, and in part of western Colorado, the Morrison may be divided \r\ninto a lower part and an upper part; each part has two members which are \r\ndi1Ierentiated on a lithologic basis. \r\n\r\nWhere differentiated, the lower part of the Morrison consists either of the \r\nSalt Wash member or the Recapture member or both; these are equivalent \r\nin age and inter tongue and intergrade over a broad area in the vicinity of the \r\nFour Corners area of New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and Utah. The Salt \r\nWash member is present in eastern Utah and parts of western Colorado, north- \r\neastern Arizona, and northwestern New Mexico. It was formed as a large \r\nalluvial plain or 'fan' by an aggrading system of braided streams diverging \r\nto the north and east from an apex in south-central Utah. The major source \r\narea of the Salt Wash was to the southwest of south-central Utah, probably in \r\nwest-central Arizona and southeastern California. The member was derived \r\nmainly from sedimentary rocks. The Salt Wash deposits grade from predomi- \r\nnantly coarse texture at the apex of the 'fan' to predominantly flne texture at \r\nthe margin of the 'fan'. \r\n\r\nThe Salt Wash member has been arbitrarily divided into four facies: a con- \r\nglomera tic sandstone facies, a sandstone and mudstone facies, a claystone and \r\nlenticular sandstone facies, and a claystone and limestone facies. \r\n\r\nThe Recapture member of the Morrison formation is present in northeastern \r\nArizona, northwestern New Mexico, and small areas of southeastern Utah \r\nand southwestern Colorado near the Four Corners. It was formed as a large \r\nalluvial plain or 'fan' by an aggrading system of braided streams. The Recap- \r\nture deposits grade from predominantly coarse texture sedimentary rocks to \r\npredominantly fine texture and have been arbitrarily divided into three facies: \r\na conglomeratic sandstone facies, a sandstone facies, and a claystone and \r\nsandstone facies. The distribution of the facies indicates that the major source area of the Recapture was south of Gallup, N. Mex., probably in west-central New Mexico. The Recapture was derived from an area of intrusive and \r\nextrusive igneous rocks, metamorphic rocks, and sedimentary rocks. \r\n\r\nThe upper part of the Morrison formation consists of the Westwater Canyon \r\nmember and the Brushy Basin member. The Westwater Canyon member forms \r\nthe lower portion of the upper part of the Morrison in northeastern Arizona, \r\nnorthwestern New Mexico, and places in southeastern Utah and southwestern \r\nColorade near the Four Corners, and it intertongues and intergrades northward \r\ninto the Brushy Basin member. The Westwater Canyon member was formed \r\nas a large alluvial plain or 'fan' by an aggrading system of braided streams. \r\nThe Westwater deposits grade from predominantly coarse-textured sedimentary \r\nrocks to somewhat finer textured sedimentary rocks, and have been arbitrarily \r\ndivided into two facies: a conglomeratic sandstone facies and a sandstone \r\nfacies. The distribution of the facies indicates that the major source area \r\nof the Westwater was south of Gallup, N. Mex., probably in west-central New \r\nMexico. The Westwater was derived from an area of intrusive and extrusive \r\nigneous rocks, metamorphic rocks, and sedimentary rocks. Grant and Ptarmigan Lakes can be made readily accessible by roads from the Seward-Anchorage Highway which in this area practically parallels the Alaska Railroad; and Cooper and Crescent Lakes by access roads from the Sterling Highway.</p><p>Geologic conditions are favorable for the construction of the various elements of a power development although some special problems may be encountered.</p><p>The power sites are located in areas of severe winter temperatures, -30° to -40° or less in most winters. This climatic feature must be given due consideration in the design of the various structures required for a power development.</p><p>Streamflow records are available for a 7-year period for Grant and Ptarmigan Creeks and for a 5-year period for Cooper and Crescent Creeks. Only short and incomplete records of precipitation are available in the area of the power sites but records have been kept at Seward for 30 years. The precipitation at Seward during the periods for which streamflow records are available was, in general, less than average. It seems reasonable that similar conditions would prevail over the upper Kenai Basin. Consequently, the available stream-flow records cover a period of less than average precipitation and estimates of potential power based on these figures probably are on the conservative side. Only regulated flow is considered in this report.</p><p>Each of the four lakes is a favorable storage site. Adequate capacity for complete regulation of the flow on a year-to-year basis or over a period of several years can be obtained by the construction of dams ranging in height from 20 to 50 feet. Water from the reservoirs can be conveyed to the powerhouses through conduits, tunnels, or pipelines of reasonable length.</p><p>The total estimated potential power for the four lakes is 11,000 kilowatts for 90 percent of the time and 14,000 kilowatts for 50 percent of the time.</p><p>Transmission line distances to Seward range from 22 miles for the Ptarmigan Lake power site to as much as 50 miles for the Cooper Lake power site that would be located on the Kenai River. Feldspar and quartz crystals locally attain a length of more than 1 foot. Some muscovite mica up to 2 inches in diameter occurs, but the major part of the mica is contained in concentrations, containing mica flakes one-half inch across, that often are as large as 10 feet across. Ruby mica of strategic grade has been obtained from float from this deposit.</p><p>None of the rarer minerals such as beryl, columbite-tantalite or cassiterite that often occur in pegmatites were observed in the preliminary examination; and small-size concentrate samples obtained by panning stream sands from the area did not contain recognizable amounts of these rarer minerals. One sample contained a few grains identified as cassiterite. No radioactive anomalies were detected in the pegmatites, or in the stream concentrates.</p><p>The large tonnage of material available arid the favorable location by a good anchorage on an ocean route are favorable factors that should contribute to the development of the deposits. The gold-bearing zone recognized by these writers continues through the area mapped by the writer to the northern shore of Chichagof Island.</p><p>Stratified rocks ranging in age from Paleozoic through Early Cretaceous were intruded by gabbro, quartz diorite, norite-gabbro, and by younger quartz diorite.</p><p>The igneous rocks from oldest to youngest are: gabbro, diorite, quartz diorite, the rocks associated with the nickel deposits, which include gabbro-norite and quartz diorite, and basalt. The diorite is believed to have been formed during Early Cretaceous time, and the gabbro is older by an unknown amount. The gabbro and diorite are believed to be, over large areas, recrystallized older rock. The oldest group of quartz diorite intrusives in places cuts the diorite and is therefore younger. The quartz diorite is minerally somewhat foliated and slightly metamorphosed.</p><p>The igneous rocks associated with the nickel deposits are the youngest of the major igneous rock groups. They intruded the Cretaceous graywacke after it had been folded to essentially its present position.</p><p>Gold is the most economically important mineral commodity mined to date. The Apex and El Nido are the two largest mines in the area, but some gold has been recovered from the Goldwin and Cobol properties and small amounts from some other small prospects. In addition to gold the area includes nickel-bearing deposits at Mirror Harbor on Chichagof Island and at Bohemia Basin on Yakobi Island. Copper mineralization occurs in the area north of Goulding Harbor.&nbsp;</p><p>An attempt has been made to outline areas favorable for prospecting based on the regional geology and, on the number and kind of quartz veins found. The Hope Valley reservoir site could be developed to provide adequate storage regulation and concentration of fall would permit utilization of 1,400 feet of head in 51h miles below the clam site, or 1,900 feet of head in about 972 miles below the dam site; however, the average annual runoff susceptible of development is only about 70,000 acre-feet which limits the power that could be developed continuously in an average year with regulation to about 8,700 kilowatts utilizing 1,400 feet of head, or 12,000 kilowatts utilizing 1,900 feet of head. The method and degree of development will be determined to large extent by the method devised to supplement regulated flows from the Hope Valley reservoir to supply the water already appropriated for irrigation. If the Hope Valley site and the Watasheamu site on East Fork Carson River were developed coordinately water could be transferred to the West Fork for distribution through canals leading from that stream thus satisfying the deficiency due to regulation at Hope Valley and release of stored water on a power schedule. This would permit utilization of the entire 1,900 feet of fall. \r\n\r\nIndependent development of the West Fork for optimum power production would require re-regulation of releases from Hope Valley reservoir and storage of a considerable part of the fall and winter flow for use during the irrigation season. Adequate storage capacity is apparently not available on the West Fork below Hope Valley; but offstream storage may be available in Diamond Valley which could be utilized by diversion from the West Fork near Woodfords. This would limit the utilization of the stream for power purposes to the development of the 1,400 feet of head between the Hope Valley dam site and Wood fords. In a year of average discharge East Fork Carson River and three of its principal tributaries could be developed to produce about 13,500 kilowatts of firm power upstream of the Watasheamu site, which has been proposed as the location of a storage reservoir, the principal use of which would be for irrigation and flood control purposes. Substantial storage regulation would be required because of the seasonal variation in flow; and while sufficient storage capacity is available for such regulation, its value for power development is limited because of the lack of concentration of fall below the storage sites where head could be economically developed. \r\n\r\nThe Watasheamu reservoir with a powerplant near the Horseshoe: Bend site could be operated to develop about 5,400 kilowatts of continuous power in a year of average discharge; however, priority to use of water for irrigation purposes would undoubtedly require operation of the Watasheamu reservoir on a schedule unfavorable to the production of firm power. It is estimated that 47 million kilowatt-hours represents the maximum generation capability of a plant at the Horseshoe Bend site in year of average discharge and a large proportion of this amount would be generated during the period of peak irrigation demand and would be seasonal in nature. Installation of about 7,000 kilowatts of capacity in a plant at the Horseshoe Bend site appears feasible.
