This shift in emphasis\nis reflected in the decreased amount of exploration drilling during\nthe period, and the accompanying increase in geologic programs of a\nlong-range nature.</p>\n<br>\n<p>The program is now directed toward a comprehensive understanding\nof the many factors involved in uranium geology, and the publication\nof reports that will make available information on all phases of the\nuranium program. Many investigations have progressed to the point\nwhere final reports are in preparation for future publication with the\npermission of the Atomic Energy Commission; for other investigations of\na continuing nature it will be several years before final reports can\nbe prepared. Formal publications (as distinguished from administrative\nTrace Elements Reports) published during the period include 10 Geological\nSurvey Bulletins or Bulletin Chapters; 116 Geological Survey maps; 15\nreports published in scientific journals; seven Trace Elements Reports\nsent to the Technical Information Service of the Atomic Energy Commission\nfor distribution and sale to the public; and four Trace Elements\nreports placed on open file. It is on the west side of Latouche Island about two miles southwest of the old mining camp of Latouche. Pyrite deposits crop out about one-half mile from the head of the bay (see fig. 1) and in the lower part of a broad basin-like valley at altitudes between 125 feet and 650 feet. The valley, which is a mile wide and two miles long, is open to the see on the northwest side and is bordered on the northeast, southeast and southwest by a high sharp-crested ridge that reaches a maximum altitude of 2,255 feet. The area can easily be reached by chartered small boat or float plane from Cordova or other towns in this part of Alaska. These veins occupy shear zones along which there is no evidence of large-scale lateral displacement. The wall rock adjacent to the veins is intensely silicified and sencitized quartz monzonite and granodiortte. The veins have yielded substantial quantities of lead, silver, zinc, and gold. The silver-lead veins consist principal1y of galena, spha1erite, tetrahedrite, cha1copyrite and pyrite in a gangue of light to dark gray quartz, altered rock, gouge, and subordinate chalcedony and carbonate minerals. No anomalous radioactivity nor uranium minerals have been found in similar veins in pre-batholithic rocks of the area.\r\n\r\nChalcedony veins and vein zones, some of which are ttraniferous, are distinctly different from the silver-lead veins and, with a single except1on, are known only in the batholith. The chalcedony vein zones consist of one or more discontinuous stringers or veins of cha1cedony and microcrystalline quartz in silicified and sericitized quartz monzonite and granodiorite, and in less strongly altered alaskite. On1y small amounts of silver ore have been produced from these chalcedony veins and vein zones.\r\n \r\nAll of the veins are ear1y Tertiary in age, but the silver-lead veins probably are older than the chalcedony veins. Uranium is closely associated with chalcedory and microcrystalline quartz in both types of veins.  This association suggests that all of the uranium in the area is of the same age. During 1948 to 1950, the Geological Survey studied and mapped the pegmatites in an area of about 58 square miles near Middletown. The primary objectives of the mapping were to determine beryllium resources of the Middletown area, and to ascertain relationships of beryl-bearing pegmatites to non-beryl-bearing pegmatites and to The Hope Valley reservoir site could be developed to provide adequate storage regulation and concentration of fall would permit utilization of 1,400 feet of head in 51h miles below the clam site, or 1,900 feet of head in about 972 miles below the dam site; however, the average annual runoff susceptible of development is only about 70,000 acre-feet which limits the power that could be developed continuously in an average year with regulation to about 8,700 kilowatts utilizing 1,400 feet of head, or 12,000 kilowatts utilizing 1,900 feet of head. The method and degree of development will be determined to large extent by the method devised to supplement regulated flows from the Hope Valley reservoir to supply the water already appropriated for irrigation. If the Hope Valley site and the Watasheamu site on East Fork Carson River were developed coordinately water could be transferred to the West Fork for distribution through canals leading from that stream thus satisfying the deficiency due to regulation at Hope Valley and release of stored water on a power schedule. This would permit utilization of the entire 1,900 feet of fall. \r\n\r\nIndependent development of the West Fork for optimum power production would require re-regulation of releases from Hope Valley reservoir and storage of a considerable part of the fall and winter flow for use during the irrigation season. Adequate storage capacity is apparently not available on the West Fork below Hope Valley; but offstream storage may be available in Diamond Valley which could be utilized by diversion from the West Fork near Woodfords. This would limit the utilization of the stream for power purposes to the development of the 1,400 feet of head between the Hope Valley dam site and Wood fords. In a year of average discharge East Fork Carson River and three of its principal tributaries could be developed to produce about 13,500 kilowatts of firm power upstream of the Watasheamu site, which has been proposed as the location of a storage reservoir, the principal use of which would be for irrigation and flood control purposes. Substantial storage regulation would be required because of the seasonal variation in flow; and while sufficient storage capacity is available for such regulation, its value for power development is limited because of the lack of concentration of fall below the storage sites where head could be economically developed. \r\n\r\nThe Watasheamu reservoir with a powerplant near the Horseshoe: Bend site could be operated to develop about 5,400 kilowatts of continuous power in a year of average discharge; however, priority to use of water for irrigation purposes would undoubtedly require operation of the Watasheamu reservoir on a schedule unfavorable to the production of firm power. It is estimated that 47 million kilowatt-hours represents the maximum generation capability of a plant at the Horseshoe Bend site in year of average discharge and a large proportion of this amount would be generated during the period of peak irrigation demand and would be seasonal in nature. Installation of about 7,000 kilowatts of capacity in a plant at the Horseshoe Bend site appears feasible. In some of these States a water right is based on ownership of land overlying the ground-water reservoir and does not depend upon putting the water to use; in some States a right is based upon priority of appropriation and use and may be forfeited if the water is allowed to go unused for a specified period, but ownership of land is not essential; and in several States both these doctrines or modifications thereof are accepted, and each applies to certain classes of water or to certain conditions of development.</p><p>Experience to date indicates that a cure for ground-water mining does not necessarily depend upon the water-rights doctrine that is accepted in the area. Indeed, some recent court decisions have incorporated both the areal factor of the landownership doctrines and the time factor of the appropriation doctrine. Overdraft can be eliminated if water is available from another source to replace some of the water taken from the affected aquifer.
