Most of the deposits are at the eastern end on the northern flank of a syncline.
Soapstone forms irregular replacement bodies as much as 100 feet thick along bedding shears, and also along a set of fracture zones which trend N. 80° W. Alteration zones, characterized by secondary microcrystalline and coarsely crystalline dolomite, commonly are associated with the soapstone.
Mining in this area, which commenced in 1952, was done originally by surface cuts; now all the operations are underground. Most production comes from five mines: the Khanda Khu, Chelethar, Bandi, Pnnjkuian, and Kharan mines. Total production is uncertain; but based on the 2,285 feet of tunnel length and on the size of the surface cuts, it is estimated to be about 20,000 tons. Indicated reserves are slightly more than 200,000 tons.

Through September 30, 1960, the records of discharge and stage of streams and contents and stage of lakes or reservoirs were published in an annual series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled, \"Surface Water Supply of the United States.\"
Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports by State. Distribution of these reports is limited; they are designed primarily for rapid release of data shortly after the end of the water year to meet local needs. The streamflow records for 1961-65 are published in the Geological Survey water-supply paper series entitled, \"Surface Water Supply of the United States, 1961-65\", and those for 1966-70 will be published in a similar series.
The Geological Survey has published records of chemical quality, suspended sediment, and water temperatures since 1941 in an annual series of water-supply papers entitled, \"Quality of Surface Waters of the United States.\" Beginning with the 1964 water year, water-quality records also have been released by State in conjunction with stream-flow records or in a separate volume.

Cuttings are chiefly siltstones, but with varying amounts of sandstones ranging from very fine sand to very coarse sand size. Color changes in the siltstones constitute the only systematic changes of lithology with depth; these are considered to be the result of variations in oxidation-reduction conditions, not the result of depositional factors. Fragments of igneous and metamorphic rocks occur sporadically in trace amounts. A pebble horizon at least 30 feet thick but of questionable lateral extent is the only distinctive sedimentary horizon.
Montmorillonite was found in siltstone fragments at and above 1,450 feet, but not in siltstone fragments at or below 1,690 feet. Quartz, calcite, microcline, albite, chlorite, and illite are present in whole-rock diffractograms throughout the hole. Dolomite occurs in most samples to a depth of 4,910 feet, and is present intermittently to a depth of 7,697 feet. Pyrite is present intermittently. No zeolites were found. Black, dominantly amorphous grains of native sulfur, which may easily be confused with asphalt, are abundant at one horizon.

Mean velocity and mean depth data, which are necessary for the computation, have been extracted from discharge measurements made at gaging stations throughout the State. The computed k2 values have been related to channel slopes obtained from topographic maps. Regression equations have been derived that express the relation of k2 to slope for streams at mean flow, median flow, 7-day 2-year low flow, and 7-day 10-year low flow. The equations indicate that an increase in channel slope or a decrease in streamflow increases k2.

Level II operations would monitor current or potential problems only. An optimum system would require Level I operations at all nine stations. A minimum system would require Level II operations at most of the stations.
