Mex., is influenced by facies changes in rocks of Permian age. Water stored for irrigation leaks from Lake McMillan into evaporite rocks, principally gypsum, of the Seven Rivers Formation and from Lake Avalon into carbonate rocks of the Tansill Formation. This leakage returns to the Pecos River at Major Johnson Springs and Carlsbad Springs. The river has perennial flow between Major Johnson Springs and Lake Avalon, but it loses water into evaporite rocks of the Yates Formation in this reach. Ground-water movement is generally toward the Pecos River in aquifers in the Pecos River valley except in the Rustler Formation east of the river where it moves southeastward toward playas east of Lake Avalon. \r\n\r\nThe chloride content of ground and surface waters indicates that surface water moves from some reaches of the Pecos River and from surface-storage reservoirs to aquifers and also indicates the degree of mixing of ground and surface waters. \r\n\r\nAbout 45,000 acre-feet of ground water is stored in highly permeable rocks in a 3-mile wide part of the Seven Rivers Formation between Lake McMillan and Major Johnson Springs. This water in storage comes from leakage from Lake McMillan and from alluvium north of the springs. The flow of Major Johnson Springs is derived from this aquifer. That part of the flow derived from the alluvium north of the springs averaged 13 cfs (cubic feet per second) from 1953 through 1959 ; about 8 cfs of this flow had not been previously measured at gaging stations on the Pecos River and its tributaries. \r\n\r\nThe most favorable plans for increasing terminal storage of the Carlsbad Irrigation District are to construct a dam at the Brantley site (at the downstream end of Major Johnson Springs), or to use underground storage in the permeable Seven Rivers Formation between Lake McMillan and Major Johnson brings in conjunction with surface storage. To avoid excessive leakage from a reservoir at the Brantley site, the dam should be downstream from all sprints in the Major Johnson Springs area but upstream from a point where the river begin losing water to the Yates Formation.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt Print. Most of the world's water is oceanic brine. Of the waters on the land, most is frozen in Antarctica and Greenland. Only a small part of continental water is available for use and management. The discharge of rivers to the sea is a close measure of the availability of liquid water, but ground-water reservoirs have important functions as inexpensive equalizers of water supply. Soil moisture is a major factor in the water economy, and its function usually is overlooked in assessments of water use and future water demand. Despite outcries of water shortage, the principal use of water in advanced countries is as a medium for waste disposal. In reality, despite regional maldistribution of water, United States supplies are adequate, given rational management. Also, contrary to common belief, water pollution is primarily a problem of economics, not of health. A paramount problem in most parts of the world is the shortage of water development and management facilities, not a shortage of water. The International Hydrological Decade is a program to awaken people everywhere to the crucial importance of water in man's future and to promote rational approach to water problems.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/cir536","usgsCitation":"Nace, R.L., 1967, Are we running out of water?: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 536, 7 p. :ill. ;26 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir536.","productDescription":"7 p. :ill. ;26 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":138954,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1967/0536/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":30642,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1967/0536/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abee4b07f02db674d4e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nace, Raymond L.","contributorId":93460,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nace","given":"Raymond","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147248,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

S. Geological Survey to obtain hydrologic data in deep holes drilled in volcanic rocks at Pahute Mesa, Nevada Test Site. The testing program in each hole includes geophysical logging, pumping, and injecting and swabbing between straddle packers. \r\n\r\nRock lithologies and qualitative data on hydrologic conditions in the borehole are obtained from electric, caliper, temperature, and fluid resistivity logs. Quantitative data on major water-yielding intervals in the borehole are obtained from radioactive tracer and spinner surveys. \r\n\r\nPumping tests are made to measure the combined yield of the various aquifers. Injection and swabbing tests are made by adding known volumes of water to, or withdrawing known volumes of water from, straddle-packed intervals and observing the rate of decline or rise in water level resulting from this injection or withdrawal of water. The yield of tested intervals is stated as relative specific capacity, in units of gallons per minute per foot of drawdown.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr6718","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Blankennagel, R., 1967, Hydraulic testing techniques of deep drill holes at Pahute Mesa, Nevada test site: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 67-18, ii, 51 p. :ill. ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6718.","productDescription":"ii, 51 p. :ill. ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":155608,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1967/0018/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":52011,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1967/0018/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a51e4b07f02db629885","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Blankennagel, R. These water-level records: (1) provide an index to available ground-water supplies; (2) facilitate the prediction of trends in water levels that will indicate likely changes in storage; (3) aid in the prediction of the base flow of streams; (4) provide information for use in basic research; (5) provide long-time continuous records of fluctuations of water levels in representative wells; and (6) serve as a framework to which other types of hydrologic data my be related.\r\nPrior to 1956, measurements of water levels in observation wells in Oklahoma were included in water-supply papers published annually by the U.S. Geological Survey. Beginning with the 1956 calendar year, however, Geological Survey water-level reports will contain only records of a selected network of observation wells, and will be published at 5-year intervals. The first of this series, for the 1956-59 period was published in 1962.\r\n\r\nThis report has been prepared primarily to present water-level records of wells not included in the Federal network. However, for the sake of completeness it includes water-level records of Federal wells that either have been or will be published in water-supply papers since 1955. This report, which contains water-level records for the 2-year period (1965-66), is the fourth in a series presenting water-level records for all permanent observations wells in Oklahoma. Geophysical log data indicate the presence of 25 gallons per ton shale for a thickness of 500 feet my be marginal. The richest section of oil shale is indicated to be centered around a depth of 2,260 feet. Within the oil shale the interval 1,182 to 1,737 feet is indicated to be relatively structurally incompetent and probably permeable. Extension of available regional hydrologic data indicate the oil shale section is probably water bearing and may yield as much as 1,000 gallons per minute. Hydrologic testing in the hole is recommended.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr6738","usgsCitation":"Carroll, R.D., Coffin, D., Ege, J., and Welder, F., 1967, Preliminary report on Bureau of Mines Yellow Creek core hole No. 1, Rio Blanco County, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 67-38, 36 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6738.","productDescription":"36 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":177319,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1967/0038/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":86959,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1967/0038/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86956,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1967/0038/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86957,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1967/0038/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86958,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1967/0038/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aafe4b07f02db66cbb1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Carroll, R. Rocks of Paleozoic age generally are carbonate or clastic, and rocks of Mesozoic age generally are clastic and granitic. Rocks of Tertiary age principally are volcanic, and the valley fill of Quaternary age is alluvial-fan and lake deposits. The rocks are folded, faulted, and highly fractured. Precipitation is closely related to altitude. In general, as the altitude increases the precipitation increases. Most of the streamflow in the valleys originates as snow in the nearby mountains. The streams generally flow only in response to snowmelt and to flash-flood-producing storms. Important chemical quality characteristics of the ground and surface water in central Nevada are hardness, expressed as CaCO3, generally in excess of 120 ppm, and a dissolved-solids content of less than 500 ppm. The principal chemical types of both ground and surface waters are sodium and calcium bicarbonates. The major uses of ground water in central Nevada are for irrigation and stock. Frequency of use of wells in decreasing order is: irrigation, stock, domestic, industrial, municipal, and observation. Of the 606 wells tabulated, 29 have multiple uses. Frequency of use of spring water in decreasing order is: stock, irrigation, domestic, and public facilities. Of the 135 springs tabulated, 5 have multiple uses.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr67190","usgsCitation":"Robinson, B., Thordarson, W., and Beetam, W.A., 1967, Hydrologic and chemical data for wells, springs, and streams in Nevada, TPS. 1-21 N., and Rs. 41-57 E: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 67-190, Report: i, 61 p.; 1 Plate: 30.69 × 39.57 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr67190.","productDescription":"Report: i, 61 p.; 1 Plate: 30.69 × 39.57 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":177439,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1967/0190/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":86990,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1967/0190/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86991,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1967/0190/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -118.0810546875,\n 38.03078569382294\n ],\n [\n -115.00488281250001,\n 38.03078569382294\n ],\n [\n -115.00488281250001,\n 40.413496049701955\n ],\n [\n -118.0810546875,\n 40.413496049701955\n ],\n [\n -118.0810546875,\n 38.03078569382294\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a29e4b07f02db6118bd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Robinson, B.P.","contributorId":7685,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Robinson","given":"B.P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":245654,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Thordarson, William","contributorId":23539,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thordarson","given":"William","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":245655,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Beetam, W.
