This magma may be available in batches that differ slightly in free silica content from batch to batch both at the same and at different volcanoes; differentiation by fractionation of olivine does not occur within this primitive magma. Silica-deficient basaltic magma, enriched in alkali, is the source of commonly porphyritic lava flows erupted less frequently and in relatively negligible volume during a declining and decadent stage of activity at some Hawaiian volcanoes. Differentiation by fractionation of olivine, plagioclase and augite is evident among these lavas, but does not account for the silica deficiency or the alkali enrichment.</p><p>Most of the data of Hawaiian volcanism and petrology can be explained by a hypothesis that batches of magma are melted from crystalline paridotite by a recurrent process (distortion of the equatorial bulge by forced and free nutational stresses) that accomplishes the melting only of the plagioclase and pyroxene component but not the excess olivine and more refractory components within a zone of fixed and limited depth. Eruption exhausts the supply of meltable magma under a given locality and, in the absence of more violent melting processes, leaves a stratum of crystalline refractory components.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0016-7037(55)90047-8","usgsCitation":"Powers, H., 1955, Composition and origin of basaltic magma of the Hawaiian Islands: Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, v. 7, no. 1-2, p. 77-107, https://doi.org/10.1016/0016-7037(55)90047-8.","productDescription":"31 p.","startPage":"77","endPage":"107","numberOfPages":"31","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":218747,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Hawaii","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -155.599365234375,\n              18.895892559415024\n            ],\n            [\n              -154.76440429687497,\n              19.497664168139053\n            ],\n            [\n              -155.126953125,\n              19.98367396609249\n            ],\n            [\n              -155.994873046875,\n              20.910134481692683\n            ],\n            [\n              -157.12646484375,\n              21.34054846908118\n            ],\n            [\n              -157.928466796875,\n              21.810508315752152\n            ],\n            [\n              -159.5654296875,\n              22.339914425562032\n            ],\n            [\n              -160.389404296875,\n              21.90227796666864\n            ],\n            [\n              -160.15869140625,\n              21.718679805703154\n            ],\n            [\n              -159.4775390625,\n              21.76970289940967\n            ],\n            [\n              -159.093017578125,\n              21.841104749065032\n            ],\n            [\n              -158.170166015625,\n              21.289374355860424\n            ],\n            [\n              -157.66479492187497,\n              21.15623836610943\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.917724609375,\n              20.632784250388028\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.24755859375,\n              19.797717490704738\n            ],\n            [\n              -155.9619140625,\n              19.03096327846469\n            ],\n            [\n              -155.6103515625,\n              18.843913201134132\n            ],\n            [\n              -155.599365234375,\n              18.895892559415024\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"7","issue":"1-2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059f91ee4b0c8380cd4d442","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Powers, H. S. Fish and Wildlife Service motor vessel Cisco in Lake Superior in 1952&ndash;1953 revealed a large population of a tiny whitefish, Coregonus (Prosopium) coulteri, which has been reported previously only from northwestern North America. The hiatus in range, from Lake Superior to the Columbia River basin, is the greatest known for a North American freshwater fish. Although minor structural differences characterize the disjunct populations of the pygmy whitefish, these are not deemed worthy of nomenclatorial recognition. Comparisons with related species indicate that the pygmy whitefish is distinctive in the small size, large scales, few vertebrae, few pyloric caeca, and in other characters.</div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">The pygmy whitefish is widely distributed in Lake Superior, especially in semi-protected bays, such as Keweenaw Bay which yielded about 68 percent of the 1,623 specimens caught. The bathymetric range was 10 to 49 fathoms, with maximum abundance at the 25- to 39-fathom interval. Average length of fish increased progressively with water depth, chiefly because the number of yearlings declined from 100 percent at 10&ndash;14 fathoms to none at 45&ndash;49 fathoms.</div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">The average total length of pygmy whitefish caught by trawling was 3.4 inches (range 1.2 to 5.7). Extraordinarily slow growth was revealed by the examination of scales. Two fish from Keweenaw Bay, both nearing the end of their eighth growing season, were only 5.4 inches long. Compared to Keweenaw Bay, growth rate was about the same near Laughing Fish Point, faster in the Apostle Islands (and in Bull and McDonald Lakes, Montana), and slower in Siskiwit Bay, Isle Royale. Females grew more rapidly than males after the second year and had a longer life span.</div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">All male pygmy whitefish were mature at the age of 2 years and a total length of 3.6 or more inches. Most females were mature at 3 years and 4.2 inches; all older females were mature. Mean egg production was 362 (range, 93 to 597) per fish and 26 per gram of total weight for fish from 3.4 to 5.9 inches long. Spawning in 1953 occurred sometime in November or December.</div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">Crustacea (principally ostracods and amphipods&ndash;copepods in the young) occurred in 106 of 112 pygmy whitefish stomachs and made up 77 percent of the total food volume. When available, fish eggs appear to be important in the diet.</div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">Other cold-water fishes&ndash;cottids, ninespine sticklebacks, smelt, and four species of coregonines&ndash;were the most frequent associates of the pygmy whitefish. Lake trout and trout-perch were also taken with it at the same stations or in the same trawl hauls. Its closest relative in Lake Superior, the round whitefish, was not an ecological associate.</div>","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","doi":"10.1577/1548-8659(1954)84[161:TPWCCI]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Eschmeyer, P.H., and Bailey, R.M., 1955, The pygmy whitefish, Coregonus coulteri, in Lake Superior: Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, v. 84, no. 1, p. 161-199, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1954)84[161:TPWCCI]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"39 p.","startPage":"161","endPage":"199","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":480428,"rank":1,"type":{"id":41,"text":"Open Access External Repository Page"},"url":"http://hdl.handle.net/2027.42/141996","text":"External Repository"},{"id":128868,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"84","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a70e4b07f02db641bdb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Eschmeyer, Paul H.","contributorId":86719,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Eschmeyer","given":"Paul","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308147,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bailey, Reeve M.","contributorId":85536,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bailey","given":"Reeve","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308146,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Measurements are made with a two-channel spectrometer equipped with quartz (d = 1.817 A.) analyzing crystals. Particle-size effects are minimized by grinding the sample components with a mixture of silicon carbide and aluminum and then briquetting. Analyses of 17 samples showed that for the 16 samples containing over 0.7% thoria the average error, based on chemical results, is 4.7% and the maximum error, 9.5%. Because of limitations of instrumentation, 0.2% thoria is considered the lower limit of detection. Alpha-particle counting has also been carried out in order to cross-calibrate thick-source counting techniques. The maximum deviation from radioactive equilibrium that has been noted is 11 per cent—indicating that there is probably equilibrium in all the formations analyzed. Thick-source alpha-particle counting by means of a proportional counter or an ionization chamber leads to high results when the samples contain less than about 10 p.p.m. of uranium. For samples having a higher content of uranium the results are in excellent agreement with each other and with those obtained by direct analytical techniques. The thorium contents that have been obtained correspond well to the average values reported in the literature. The uranium content of marine sediments may be appreciably higher than the average values that have been reported for sedimentary rocks. Data show that there is up to fourteen times the percentage of uranium as of thorium in the formations studied and that the percentage of thorium never exceeds that of uranium. The research established the range of conditions under which phosphate, arsenate, silicate, and germanate give the molybdenum blue reaction for differentiating these elements, and developed a method for the determination of phosphate in waters containing up to 10 p.p.m. of the oxides of germanium, arsenic(V), and silicon. With stannous chloride or 1-amino-2-naphthol-4-sulfonic acid as the reducing agent no conditions were found for distinguishing silicate from germanate and phosphate from arsenate. In the recommended procedure the phosphate is concentrated by coprecipitation on aluminum hydroxide, and coprecipitated arsenic, germanium, and silicon are volatilized by a mixture of hydrofluoric, hydrochloric, and hydrobromic acids prior to the determination of phosphate. The authors are able to report that the total phosphorus content of several samples of sea water from the Gulf of Mexico ranged from 0.018 to 0.059 mg. of phosphorus pentoxide per liter of water.","language":"English","publisher":"ACS Publications","doi":"10.1021/ac60098a022","usgsCitation":"Levine, H., Rowe, J., and Grimaldi, F.S., 1955, Molybdenum blue reaction and determination of phosphorus in waters containing arsenic, silicon, and germanium: Analytical Chemistry, v. 27, no. 2, p. 258-262, https://doi.org/10.1021/ac60098a022.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"258","endPage":"262","numberOfPages":"5","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219475,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"27","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2002-05-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a5d2ee4b0c8380cd701f9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Levine, H.","contributorId":39513,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Levine","given":"H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":359440,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Rowe, J.J.","contributorId":29460,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rowe","given":"J.J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":359439,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Grimaldi, F. A generally applicable, simple method for the determination of fluorine in rocks containing aluminum or silicon or both as major constituents was desired. In the procedure developed, the sample is fused with a mixture of sodium carbonate and zinc oxide, leached with water, and filtered. The residue is granular and retains nearly all of the silica. The fluorine in the filtrate is distilled directly from a perchloric acid-phosphoric acid mixture. Phosphoric acid permits the quantitative distillation of fluorine in the presence of much aluminum at the usual distillation temperature and without the collection of large volumes of distillate. The fluorine is determined either by microtitration with thorium nitrate or colorimetrically with thoron. The procedure is rapid and has yielded excellent results on silicate rocks and on samples from the aluminum phosphate (leached) zone of the Florida phosphate deposits.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Analytical Chemistry","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","issn":"00032700","usgsCitation":"Grimaldi, F.S., Ingram, B., and Cuttitta, F., 1955, Determination of small and large amounts of fluorine in rocks: Analytical Chemistry, v. 27, no. 6, p. 918-921.","startPage":"918","endPage":"921","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219623,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"27","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059ffc7e4b0c8380cd4f3c4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Grimaldi, F. Sulfur contents range from 0.001 to 5.0%. Experiments show that the combustion method can be used in analyzing sedimentary rocks in which sulfur is present as sulfide, sulfate, or both. Pulverized samples from 0.100 to 0.500 gram in weight are used in this method. Each sample is placed in a No. 6 Leco combustion boat and covered with two fluxes: 0.50 gram of standard ingot iron and approximately 1.0 gram of 30-mesh granular tin. The boat with sample then is placed in the combustion tube of a Burrell Unit Package Model T29A tube furnace which is controlled at a temperature of 1310° to 1320° C. After the sample has been heated for 1 minute, oxygen is admitted at a rate of about 1 liter per minute. The sulfur dioxide formed is absorbed in a starch solution and is titrated with standard potassium iodate in a Leco sulfur determinator. The present work was undertaken to establish conditions overcoming these solubilities and to find optimum conditions for precipitating thorium and the rare earth elements as hydroxides and sebacates. The investigations resulted in a reliable procedure applicable to samples in which the cerium group elements predominate. The oxalate precipitations are made from homogeneous solution at pH 2 by adding a prepared solution of anhydrous oxalic acid in methanol instead of the more expensive crystalline methyl oxalate. Calcium is added as a carrier. Quantitative precipitation of thorium and the rare earth elements is ascertained by further small additions of calcium to the supernatant liquid, until the added calcium precipitates as oxalate within 2 minutes. Calcium is removed by precipitating the hydroxides of thorium and rare earths at room temperature by adding ammonium hydroxide to pH &gt; 10. Thorium is separated as the sebacate at pH 2.5, and the rare earths are precipitated with ammonium sebacate at pH 9. The velocity of flow and the transportation of the total sediment load in suspension were observed under varying conditions of flow. Also noted was the resistance to flow caused by vertical baffles, which were fastened to the floor of the flume. The prototype tests consisted of observations at the measuring sill of velocity and sediment concentration for all flows. For normal flows observations were made upstream and downstream from the flume. Samples of total sediment load and bed material were analyzed for particle size. Minor studies of dune movement in model and prototype were also included.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Society of Civil Engineers","doi":"10.1061/TACEAT.0007126","usgsCitation":"Benedict, P., Albertson, M.L., and Matejka, D.Q., 1955, Total sediment load measured in turbulence flume: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers, v. 120, no. 1, p. 457-484, https://doi.org/10.1061/TACEAT.0007126.","productDescription":"28 p.","startPage":"457","endPage":"484","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":277059,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"120","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd794fe4b0b2908510cbbd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Benedict, Paul C.","contributorId":72293,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Benedict","given":"Paul C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":483142,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Albertson, Maurice L.","contributorId":82209,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Albertson","given":"Maurice","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":483143,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Matejka, Donald Q.","contributorId":99878,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Matejka","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"Q.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":483144,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
