Potassium, chloride, and nitrate concentrations were not significantly different between mined and nonmined areas. \r\n\r\nMean sulfate loads carried by the Tradewater River at Olney were about 75 percent greater for the period 1955-67 than for the period 1952-54. Suspended-sediment loads at Olney for the November-April storm-runoff periods generally vary in response to strip-mine coal production in the basin above Olney. Streamflow is maintained during extended dry periods in mined subbasins after streams in nonmined subbasins have ceased flowing. \r\n\r\nSome possible methods of reducing the effects of mine drainage on the streams are considered in view of a geochemical model proposed by Ivan Barnes and F. E. Clarke. Use of low-flow-augmenting reservoirs and crushed limestone in streambeds in nonmined areas seems to be the most promising method for alleviating effects of mine drainage at the present time. Other aspects of the water resources such as variability of water quantity and water quality in the basin are discussed briefly.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Print. Rainfall, averaging about 30 inches annually in much of the basin, occurs chiefly in a wet season which lasts from May to October. A prolonged dry season extending from October to April is dominated by dusty harmattan winds from the northeast. April and May are the hottest months, when temperatures occasionally reach 105?F.\r\n\r\nFlow in streams of the Sokoto Basin is mostly overland runoff. Only in a few reaches, fed by ground-water discharge from the sedimentary rocks, are streams perennial. In the River Zamfara basin, ground-water discharge contributes almost 1 inch of the average 3.33 inches of total annual runoff. In the vicinity of Sokoto, the River Rima flows throughout the year sustained by spring discharge from perched ground water in limestone of the Kalambaina Formation. On the crystalline terrane where most of the streams rise, total annual runoff may exceed 5 inches, very little of which is ground-water discharge. \r\n\r\nThe sedimentary rocks of the basin range in age from Cretaceous to Tertiary and are composed mostly of interbedded sand, clay, and some limestone; the beds dip gently toward the northwest. Alluvium of Quaternary age underlies the lowlands of the River Sokoto (now Sokoto) and its principal tributaries. These rocks contain three important artesian aquifers, in addition to regional unconfined ground-water bodies in all the principal outcron areas, and a perched water body in the outcrop of the Kalambaina Formation. Artesian aquifers occur at depth in the Gundumi Formation, the Rima Group, and the Gwandu Formation and are separated from one another by clay beds in the lower part of the Rima Group and the Dange Formation. In outcrop, clay in the Dange Formation also supports the perched water of the Kalambaina Formation. \r\n\r\nThe Gundumi Formation, resting on the basement complex, is composed of varicolored clay, sand, and gravel and attains a thickness of 800 to 1,000 feet in its downdip extensions. Most of the formation is thin bedded and clayey and therefore does not yield large quantities of water to boreholes; the average yield is 2,700 gph (gallons per hour). (All gallons are imperial gallons.) Nevertheless, the upper part of the formation is sandy and more permeable and forms a regional artesian aquifer from which yields of as much as 6,600 gph are obtained from single boreholes. Clay in the lower part of the Rima Group confines the Gundumi aquifer downdip, so that at Rabah and Sokoto, for example, in the River Sokoto fadama (valley floor), artesian flow is found in boreholes screened in the Gundumi. \r\n\r\nAquifer tests indicate low transmissivities, ranging from 300 to 5,000 gpd per ft (gallons per day per foot) in the lower part of the Gundumi Formation; but in the upper sandy zone the transmissivities are much higher, reaching 66,000 gpd per ft. In the western part of the Sokoto Basin, more productive aquifers with higher heads usually lie above the Gundumi aquifer so that it is not attractive for development, except in the River Sokoto fadama where artesian flow is possible. \r\n\r\nThe Illo Group, which is in part contemporaneous with the Gundumi Formation, includes interbedded varicolored clay and grit in the southern part of the Sokoto Basin. The upper part of the Illo is known to be water-bearing; however, except for the test borehole at Mungadi, little is known of its subsurface extent and water-yielding potential. \r\n\r\nOverlying the Gundumi Formation in the central and northern part of the Sokoto Basin are interbedded fine gray sand and dark gray clay of the Wurno and Taloka Formations, separated in the extreme north by clay shale of the Dukamaje Formation. Collectively known as the Rima Group, these sediments attain a thickness of more than 1,000 feet near the Niger border. At depth and downdip the clayey beds practically disappear; the sandy beds become thicker and coar","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Print. The detailed study of these earthquakes provides a tool for gaining insight into the tectonic and physical processes responsible for the generation of damaging earthquakes. This catalog contains the fundamental parameters for earthquakes located within and adjacent to the seismograph network operated by the National Center for Earthquake Research (NCER), U.S. Geological Survey, during the period January - March, 1972.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The motivation for these detailed studies has been described by Pakiser and others (1969) and by Eaton and others (1970). Similar catalogs of earthquakes for the years 1969, 1970 and 1971 have been prepared by Lee and others (1972 b,c,d). The basic data contained in these catalogs provide a foundation for further studies.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>This catalog contains data on 1,718 earthquakes in Central California. Of particular interest is a sequence of earthquakes in the Bear Valley area which contained single shocks with local magnitudes of S.O and 4.6. Earthquakes from this sequence make up roughly 66% of the total and are currently the subject of an interpretative study. Arrival times at 118 seismograph stations were used to locate the earthquakes listed in this catalog. Of these, 94 are telemetered stations operated by NCER. Readings from the remaining 24 stations were obtained through the courtesy of the Seismographic Stations, University of California, Berkeley (UCB); the Earthquake Mechanism Laboratory, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, San Francisco (EML); and the California Department of Water Resources, Sacramento.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The Seismographic Stations of the University of California, Berkeley,have for many years published a bulletin describing earthquakes in Northern California and the surrounding area, and readings at UCB Stations from more distant events. The purpose of the present catalog is not to replace the UCB Bulletin, but rather to supplement it, by describing the seismicity of a portion of central California in much greater detail.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr73363","collaboration":"Work performed in cooperation with the Division of Reactor Development and Technology, Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Wesson, R.L., Bennett, R., and Meagher, K., 1973, Catalog of earthquakes along the San Andreas fault system in Central California: January-March, 1972: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 73-363, 60 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr73363.","productDescription":"60 p.","numberOfPages":"60","temporalStart":"1972-01-01","temporalEnd":"1972-03-31","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":288783,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":288782,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1973/0363/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -123.0579,35.6975 ], [ -123.0579,38.8461 ], [ -119.9817,38.8461 ], [ -119.9817,35.6975 ], [ -123.0579,35.6975 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f3e4b07f02db5efb0d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wesson, R. The amount of energy lost is governed by channel roughness, which is expressed in terms of a roughness coefficient. An evaluation of the roughness coefficient is necessary in many hydraulic computations that involve flow in an open channel. Owing to the lack of satisfactory quantitative procedure, the ability of evaluate roughness coefficients can be developed only through experience; however, a basic knowledge of the methods used to assign the coefficients and the factors affecting them will be a great help.</p> \n<br>\n<p>One of the most commonly used equations in open-channel hydraulics is that of Manning. The Manning equation is</p>\n<br>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;1.486</p>\n<p>V=_____R<sup>2/3</sup>S<sub>e</sub><sup>1/2</sup>,</p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;n</p>\n<br>\n<p>in which</p>\n<br>\n<p>V = mean cross-sectional velocity of flow, in feet per second;</p>\n<br>\n<p>R = hydraulic radius at a cross section, which is the cross-sectional area divided by the wetter perimeter, in feet;</p>\n<br>\n<p>S<sub>e</sub> = energy slope; and</p>\n<br>\n<p>n = coefficient of roughness.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Many research studies have been made to determine \"n\" values for open-channel flow (Carter and others, 1963). Guidelines for selecting coefficient of roughness for stream channels are given in most of the literature of stream-channel hydraulics, but few of the data relate directly to streams of Arizona, The U.S> Geological Survey, at the request of the Arizona Highway Department, assembled the color photographs and tables of the Manning \"n\" values in this report to aid highway engineers in the selection of roughness coefficients for Arizona streams. Most of the photographs show channel reaches for which values of \"n\" have been assigned by experienced Survey personnel; a few photographs are included for reaches where \"n\" values have been verified. Verified \"n\" values are computed from a known discharge and measured channel geometry. Selected photographs of stream channels for which \"n\" values have been verified are included in U.S. Geological Survey Water-Supply Paper 1849 (Barnes, 1967); stereoscopic slides of Barnes' (1967) photographs and additional photographs can be inspected at U.S> Geological Survey offices in: 2555 E. Rate of development during incubation was based on progression of the embryos through 20 identifiable stages. \n\nAn equation was derived to predict development stage at constant temperatures, on the general assumption that development stage (DS) is a function of time (days, D) and temperature (T). The equation should also be useful in interpreting estimates from future regressions that include other environmental variables that affect egg development. \n\nA second regression model, derived primarily for fluctuating temperatures, related development rate for stage j (DR<sub>j</sub>), expressed as the reciprocal of time, to temperature (x). The generalized equation for a development stage is: DR<sub>j</sub> = ab<sup>x</sup> c<sup>x<sup>2</sup></sup> d<sup>x<sup>3</sup></sup>. \n\nIn general, time required for embryos to reach each stage of development in Pickerel Lake agreed closely with the time predicted from this equation, derived from our laboratory observations. Hatching time was predicted within 1 day in 1969 and within 2 days in 1970. \n\nWe used the equations derived with the second model to predict the effect of the superimposition of temperature increases of 1 and 2 C on the measured temperatures in Pickerel Lake. Conceivably, hatching dates could be affected sufficiently to jeopardize the first feeding of lake herring through loss of harmony between hatching date and seasonal food availability.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"NRC Research Press","doi":"10.1139/f73-135","usgsCitation":"Colby, P.J., and Brooke, L., 1973, Effects of temperature on embryonic development of lake herring (<i>Coregonus artedii</i>): Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada, v. 30, no. 6, p. 799-810, https://doi.org/10.1139/f73-135.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"799","endPage":"810","numberOfPages":"12","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":288970,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":288968,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1139/f73-135"}],"country":"United States","state":"Michigan","county":"Washtenaw County","otherGeospatial":"Pickerel Lake","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -84.789812,45.386668 ], [ -84.789812,45.408435 ], [ -84.743084,45.408435 ], [ -84.743084,45.386668 ], [ -84.789812,45.386668 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"30","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53ae76a1e4b0abf75cf2bfc6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Colby, Peter J.","contributorId":89831,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Colby","given":"Peter","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":354575,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Brooke, L.T.","contributorId":60589,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brooke","given":"L.T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":354574,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The tract is a relatively flat, low-lying, generally sandy area containing shallowly incised streams. The larger streams are commonly bordered by swamps. The tract was purchased by the State primarily as a water-supply preserve, but also for conservation and recreational purposes.</p>\n<p>Mean streamflow at three continuous record gaging stations in the Wharton Tract is: Mullica River near Batsto (46.1-square mile drainage area), 6 mgd (million gallons per day); Batsto River at Batsto (70.5-square mile drainage area), 81 mgd; Oswego River at Harrisville (64.0-square mile drainage area), 55 mgd. Thus mean discharge from this 180.6-sq mi (square mile) area is 202 mgd or 1.12 mgd per sq mi.</p>\n<p>Principal aquifers in the Wharton Tract and Mullic River basin are in the Kirkwood Formation of middle Miocene age, Cohansey Sand of Miocene(?) and Pliocene(?) age, and in overlying hydraulically connected deposits of Quaternary age.</p>\n<p>The Kirkwood Formation is composed of sand, silt, and clay. Diverse lithologies represent deposition in different environments such as nearshore marine, barrier bar, lagoonal, estuarine, and tidal marsh. Hydraulic characteristics of the Kirkwood in the Mullica River basin are virtually unknown. Most Kirkwood aquifers in the basin are believed to be hydraulically connected with the overlying Cohansey Sand.</p>\n<p>The Cohansey Sand is dominantly a quartz sand containing minor amounts of pebbly sand, silty sand, and interbedded clay. Almost all of the Wharton Tract and most of the Mullica River basin lie within the sandier area of the Cohansey, which contains approximately 75 percent sand beds and 25 percent silt and clay beds. Data from test drilling show that the upper 100 feet of sediments in the Wharton Tract contain about 93 percent sand beds, 3.5 percent clay beds, and 3.5 percent silt beds. The Cohansey in the Tract ranges in thickness from less than 50 feet to about 180 feet; the average thickness is about 125 feet.</p>\n<p>The Cohansey Sand is believed to be, in overall aspect, a deltaic deposit. It contains materials that were deposited locally in nearshore-marine, fluvial, estuarine, lagoonal, and beach environments.</p>\n<p>The hydraulic conductivity of Cohansey aquifer material ranges from about 90 to 250 feet per day (660 to 1,885 gallons per day per square foot) in southern New Jersey. One aquifer test in the Wharton Tract gives an average value of 130 feet per day (1,000 gallons per day per square foot). The transmissivity of the Cohansey Sand aquifer through most of the Wharton Tract is typically between 10,000 and 20,000 square feet per day (75,000 and 150,000 gallons per day per foot).</p>\n<p>Deposits of Quaternary age form a discontinuous veneer lying unconformably above the Cohansey Sand. The most important hydrologic function of most of these deposits is to absorb precipitation and transmit the water to the underlying Cohansey Sand. Thicker deposits of estuarine sand and clay of the Cape May Formation fill a channel in the underlying Cohansey Sand along the lower reaches of the Mullica River. This channel deposit is 85 feet thick near Batsto.</p>\n<p>Ground water and surface water in the Mullica River basin are low in dissolved solids, generally less than 50 mg/1 (milligrams per liter). Iron concentrations are generally high, up to 49,000 micrograms per liter (49 mg/1) in ground water and up to 7,100 micrograms per liter (7.1 mg/1) in the streams. The water is acidic as indicated by typical pH values of from 4.5 to 6.5. Color of the surface water is commonly high, ranging from 3 - 150 platinum-cobalt units. After appropriate treatment these waters are acceptable for most uses.</p>\n<p>The Wharton Tract is well situated to support the growing water needs of nearby New Jersey communities. Maximum development of water can be achieved by conjunctive use of ground and surface water. During most of the year, some water would be withdrawn either directly from streams or from adjacent wells. During periods of low flow during summer or fall water would be pumped from wells farther from the stream~. From analysis of flow-duration curves it is estimated that 70 mgd of water could be developed with minimal effect upon low flows in the half of the tract above the gaging stations on the Mullica and Batsto Rivers. The quantity available in the entire tract is greater, possibly in the order of 150 mgd. With augmentation of streamflow by pumping from ground water, it is likely that considerably more water could be safely used on a perennial basis.</p>\n<p>A possibility exists for multiple use of the water resources of the Mullica River through construction of an inexpensive tide barrier at the Garden State Parkway. This would create a fresh water lake in a State forest, park, and recreational area, which would also provide a flexible and economical water supply for much of the Atlantic coastal resort development.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"State of New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Water Resources","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with United States Department of the Interior Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Rhodehamel, E.C., 1973, Geology and water resources of the Wharton Tract and the Mullica River basin in southern New Jersey: Special Report 36, 58 p.","productDescription":"58 p.","numberOfPages":"65","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":287918,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":287917,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70106983/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Jersey","otherGeospatial":"Mullica River","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -75.7768,38.8517 ], [ -75.7768,40.7423 ], [ -73.8448,40.7423 ], [ -73.8448,38.8517 ], [ -75.7768,38.8517 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"537b27f4e4b0929ba496ab78","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rhodehamel, Edward C.","contributorId":38135,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rhodehamel","given":"Edward","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":493827,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
