The lead isotopic composition in the whole rocks was found to be highly radiogenic with a range in Pb<sup>206</sup>/Pb<sup>204</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>of 19.58 to 42.27; the corresponding range in microclines is 15.39 to 22.44. A Pb<sup>206</sup>/Pb<sup>204</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>versus Pb<sup>207</sup>/Pb<sup>204</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>plot of the whole-rock data yields an apparent isochron age of 2,790 ± 80 m.y. as the time of crystallization of the granite. Chemically determined values of U<sup>238</sup>/Pb<sup>204</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>in the whole rocks lie between 3.3 and 18.4 and are too low to account for the amount of radiogenic lead observed. A material balance of lead, thorium, and uranium components indicates that an average of approximately 75 percent of the amount of uranium required to produce the radiogenic lead was removed from the rocks, whereas, on the average, there was no apparent loss of thorium. Loss of uranium from the granite is demonstrated to extend at least to a depth of 165 ft in a drill core. The average uranium loss from the samples analyzed represents about 20 g uranium per 1,000 kg of rock that apparently was removed during the Cenozoic and that probably constitutes the major source of uranium now in ore deposits in central Wyoming basins.</p><p>The lead isotopic composition of the microclines indicates that lead was mobilized within the granite and was isolated in the feldspar during a thermal event about 1,640 + 120 m.y. ago. However, there is no evidence that the whole rocks themselves became open systems at that time. Whole-rock and microcline isochrons intersect at Pb<sup>206</sup>/Pb<sup>204</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>and Pb<sup>207</sup>/Pb<sup>204</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>of 13.77 and 14.86, respectively, indicating a characteristic U<sup>238</sup>/Pb<sup>204</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>of 8.96 in the source region of the granite magma.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1973)84<989:LISAUD>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Rosholt, J.N., Zartman, R., and Nkomo, I.T., 1973, Lead isotope systematics and uranium depletion in the Granite Mountains, Wyoming: Geological Society of America Bulletin, v. 84, no. 3, p. 989-1002, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1973)84<989:LISAUD>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"989","endPage":"1002","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":414633,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Wyoming","otherGeospatial":"Granite Mountains","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -108.44179521564935,\n              42.70666419102372\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.44179521564935,\n              41.902281727982114\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.14565263752439,\n              41.902281727982114\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.14565263752439,\n              42.70666419102372\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.44179521564935,\n              42.70666419102372\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"84","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rosholt, J. The streamflow characteristics&nbsp;are related to processes of karstification, these processes being&nbsp;dependent on circulation of subsurface water and solution of the rock&nbsp;to form characteristic topography and underground cavern systems. &nbsp;Very highly cavernous and permeable unsaturated zones tend to keep&nbsp;the water table depressed below land surface in many karst regions, a&nbsp;condition that leads to a low density of perennial streams. The uneven&nbsp;distribution of permeability beneath surface karst streams causes them&nbsp;to lose or gain water, depending on the position of the water table with&nbsp;reference to stream level. The conventional techniques of interpolation&nbsp;and extrapolation that have been reasonably successful in approximating&nbsp;streamflow of ungaged sites in nonkarstic regions have only&nbsp;limited use in karst regions. Relative,&nbsp;to a north-south dilation, nearly all directions of zones of dextral&nbsp;(right-lateral) en echelon fractures lie in the northeast quadrant, while&nbsp;those of sinistral (left-lateral) en echelon fractures concentrate in the<br />northwest quadrant. Statistically, directions of the two types of zones&nbsp;define unimodal frequency curves that intersect at about 90 degrees to,<br />and thus define the direction of, applied dilation. The method has been&nbsp;field tested twice and is believed to be suitable for any area<br />characterized by (1) generally unidirectional horizontal strain and (2)&nbsp;an adequate population of geologically contemporaneous fissures,<br />including roughly equal development of sinistral and dextral en echelon&nbsp;arrays. The lower diamicton is glaciomarine; the upper&nbsp;diamicton is probably a mudflow. The lower diamicton contains the&nbsp;foraminifer <i>Elphidium clavatum</i>&nbsp;Cushman, a species typical of fiords. &nbsp;Similar diamicton crops out along Gastineau Channel near Juneau, 15&nbsp;miles eastward. Diamicton in both areas reflects deposition in glacier-free&nbsp;fiords during land depression and sea transgression. Consequently,<br />till-like deposits less than 700 feet above sea level elsewhere in&nbsp;southeastern Alaska should be considered as possibly glaciomarine. &nbsp;Sliding occurred after late 1962, but before July 1964; the March 27,&nbsp;1964, Alaska earthquake might have caused sliding of diamicton&nbsp;saturated by melting snow and spring rains. The peat in the landslide&nbsp;scarp has a published radiocarbon date of 3,400&plusmn;250 years B.P.&nbsp;(W-1955). The peat was expected to be older, and to relate to Holocene&nbsp;tectonic movement of Admiralty Island. The unexpectedly young date&nbsp;led to additional field study that showed the material over the peat to&nbsp;be a probable mudflow derived from glaciomarine diamicton upvalley;&nbsp;the date has no tectonic significance.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Miller, R.D., 1973, Two diamictons in a landslide scarp on Admiralty Island, Alaska, and the tectonic insignificance of an intervening peat bed: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 1, no. 3, p. 309-314.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"309","endPage":"314","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":312995,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":312994,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1973/vol1issue3/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"23.61 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States of America","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Admiralty Island","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -135.10986328125,\n              58.52525717092532\n            ],\n            [\n              -134.857177734375,\n              58.034280685772735\n            ],\n            [\n              -134.62646484375,\n              57.344309849972895\n            ],\n            [\n              -134.71435546875,\n              57.18687872765791\n            ],\n            [\n              -134.659423828125,\n              56.9569571133683\n            ],\n            [\n              -134.01123046874997,\n              57.20175947677694\n            ],\n            [\n              -133.5498046875,\n              57.37986126240439\n            ],\n            [\n              -134.066162109375,\n              58.05753828340334\n            ],\n            [\n              -134.208984375,\n              58.222811012582135\n            ],\n            [\n              -134.67041015625,\n              58.21413156442685\n            ],\n            [\n              -134.9395751953125,\n              58.56252272853734\n            ],\n            [\n              -135.10986328125,\n              58.52525717092532\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"1","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5683bcbfe4b0a04ef4925e61","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miller, Robert D.","contributorId":85168,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":583675,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

A&nbsp;summary of strikes of all joint sets shows the following pattern relative&nbsp;to the direction of glacial advance: two sets, thought to be extension&nbsp;joints, flank the direction of advance and are separated from it by&nbsp;about 10&deg;; two sets, thought to be shear joints, flank the direction of&nbsp;advance by about 40&deg;; and two sets, thought to be release joints, are&nbsp;about 70&deg; to 80&deg; from the direction of advance, or nearly perpendicular&nbsp;to the extension joints. An average of five joint sets, including&nbsp;three or four in this pattern, was found at each locality. The joints are&nbsp;believed to have been opened, in response to stress applied by the&nbsp;moving ice, along preexisting zones of weakness (potential regional&nbsp;joints) in the rock. Some new joints may have formed where no such&nbsp;zone was present near the position required for fracture under the&nbsp;applied stress. Calcium and magnesium were displaced&nbsp;from the clay by the sodium; the exchanged and dissolved noncarbonate&nbsp;calcium precipitated as calcium carbonate, and the magnesium&nbsp;remained in solution. Fluoride entered into both a rapid reaction and a&nbsp;long-term reaction, indicating solution from the material. The pH&nbsp;decreased rapidly. The reactions for all observed ions, other than&nbsp;fluoride, were faster than the response time of their respective electrodes&nbsp;and were complete in less than one minute. Rapid solution of&nbsp;material containing calcium, magnesium, sodium, and fluoride was also&nbsp;observed when a duplicate sample of the earth material was added to&nbsp;distilled water; pH also changed rapidly in this mixture. The distribution of basement rocks and mapped&nbsp;faults, coupled with gravity-geophysical data, suggests that the area&nbsp;between the San Andreas and Sur-Nacimiento fault zones (the Salinian&nbsp;block) near Monterey Bay is broken into several discrete structural&nbsp;blocks. &nbsp;Some of these blocks juxtapose not only different basement&nbsp;rocks, but also different contour patterns on the buried basement&nbsp;surface. These features suggest large strike-slip movements along some&nbsp;faults within the Salinian block in the Monterey Bay area.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Ross, D.C., and Brabb, E.E., 1973, Petrography and structural relations of granitic basement rocks in the Monterey Bay area, California: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 1, no. 3, p. 273-282.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"273","endPage":"282","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":313008,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":313007,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1973/vol1issue3/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"23.61 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States of America","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Monterey Bay","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.13775634765625,\n              36.94440418245903\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.00042724609374,\n              36.986100060204095\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.8878173828125,\n              36.99158465967016\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.81365966796874,\n              36.912568282851964\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.75735473632812,\n              36.81038419804105\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.78756713867189,\n              36.65079252503471\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.87271118164062,\n              36.56811502180857\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.981201171875,\n              36.54715598643371\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.14187622070311,\n              36.67062193440137\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.20504760742186,\n              36.849955535919875\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.13775634765625,\n              36.94440418245903\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"1","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5683bcbce4b0a04ef4925e57","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ross, Donald C.","contributorId":146987,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ross","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":583705,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Brabb, Earl E.","contributorId":48939,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brabb","given":"Earl","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":583706,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

A ternary plot of modal&nbsp;quartz : K-feldspar : plagioclase from more than 200 granitic samples&nbsp;from the Salinian block has an elongate, nearly horizontal, quartz-rich&nbsp;trend that appears trondhjemitic to some observers. However, petrographic&nbsp;and chemical comparison of these rocks with trondhjemite&nbsp;from the type area in Norway and with rocks called trondhjemite in the&nbsp;Western United States shows that the granitic rocks of the Salinian&nbsp;block are not trondhjemitic. The absence of trondhjemite in the&nbsp;Salinian block further supports the contention that this terrane is not&nbsp;merely a westward continuation of Sierran basement but is a displaced&nbsp;basement block.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Ross, D.C., 1973, Are the granitic rocks of the Salinian block trondhjemitic?: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 1, no. 3, p. 251-254.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"251","endPage":"254","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":313017,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1973/vol1issue3/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"23.61 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":313018,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States of America","state":"California","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -124.43115234375,\n              42.08191667830631\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.88281249999999,\n              42.09822241118974\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.7509765625,\n              39.11301365149975\n            ],\n            [\n              -113.73046875,\n              34.470335121217495\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.63134765625001,\n              32.75032260780972\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.88281249999999,\n              32.175612478499325\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.27783203125,\n              36.56260003738548\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.07958984375001,\n              38.90813299596705\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.91455078125,\n              40.91351257612758\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.43115234375,\n              42.08191667830631\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"1","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5683bcbae4b0a04ef4925e49","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ross, Donald C.","contributorId":146987,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ross","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":583730,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

As regulators of water movement in the hydrological cycle, these reservoirs surpass all lakes combined, natural and manmade. While many aquifers are not well understood, data on many others are adequate for long‐range broad‐scale planning. An example is the basalt aquifer of the Snake River Plain in Idaho. However, the area has managerial problems which concern the time, the place and the feasibility of manipulations of water. All continents of the world contain great aquifers. For every huge aquifer, however, hundreds of smaller ones occur, and even these contain astonishing amounts of water. Aquifers in the Ohio River Basin of the United States are good examples. Management of total water resources is a difficult problem at many places. But many problems could be met and many water shortages alleviated or eliminated by use of aquifers, not merely as sources of water, but as reservoirs for management of water.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1111/j.1752-1688.1973.tb01707.x","issn":"1093474X","usgsCitation":"Nace, R.L., 1973, Ground water in perspective: JAWRA, v. 9, no. 1, p. 18-24, https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1752-1688.1973.tb01707.x.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"18","endPage":"24","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":370204,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States ","state":"Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Oregon","otherGeospatial":"Snake River Plain ","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -117.26806640625,\n 47.62097541515849\n ],\n [\n -120.08056640625,\n 44.94924926661153\n ],\n [\n -121.1572265625,\n 44.26093725039923\n ],\n [\n -119.61914062499999,\n 43.89789239125797\n ],\n [\n -116.21337890625,\n 43.24520272203356\n ],\n [\n -114.12597656249999,\n 42.97250158602597\n ],\n [\n -111.73095703125,\n 44.11914151643737\n ],\n [\n -111.29150390625,\n 42.5530802889558\n ],\n [\n -109.27001953125,\n 42.08191667830631\n ],\n [\n -108.3251953125,\n 42.69858589169842\n ],\n [\n -107.666015625,\n 43.43696596521823\n ],\n [\n -108.65478515625,\n 44.731125592643274\n ],\n [\n -109.77539062499999,\n 46.14939437647686\n ],\n [\n -110.36865234374999,\n 47.68018294648414\n ],\n [\n -112.19238281249999,\n 48.04870994288686\n ],\n [\n -117.26806640625,\n 47.62097541515849\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"9","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2007-06-08","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nace, R.
