With panchromatic and multiband systems the density differences are recorded in shades of gray. On color or color infrared film, with the emulsion containing dyes sensitive to different wavelengths, a color image is created by a combination of color densities. The colors, however, can be separated by filtering or other techniques, and the color image reduced to monochromatic images in which each of the separated bands is recorded as a function of the gray scale.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/7000079","usgsCitation":"Edson, D., and Colvocoresses, A.P., 1973, Autographic theme extraction: General Interest Publication, 7 p. : col. maps ; 23 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/7000079.","productDescription":"7 p. : col. maps ; 23 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":261227,"rank":800,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/7000079/report.pdf"},{"id":261228,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/7000079/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9be4b07f02db65dd17","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Edson, D.","contributorId":15724,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Edson","given":"D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":344054,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Colvocoresses, Alden P.","contributorId":72779,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Colvocoresses","given":"Alden","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":344055,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Because a single tree ring is usually formed each year, the age of the tree at the time it was cut can be determined by simply counting the rings. If the year of cutting is known, the year during which each ring was formed can be determined by counting backwards from the outside ring. Such \"dating\" of rings may reveal that rings formed during certain extreme drought years are unusually narrow. This has led to speculation that tree ring characteristics may indicate a number of things about past water and climatic conditions.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/7000082","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1973, Tree rings : timekeepers of the past: General Interest Publication, 15 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/7000082.","productDescription":"15 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":196318,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/7000082.JPG"},{"id":309498,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/7000082/report.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4affe4b07f02db697d56","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":535104,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Packer seats were poor in the uncased part of the hole because of unstable wall conditions, and leakage around packers occurred during some tests. In the first study, 36 of 60 flightless adult and juvenile ducks held on eight 0.1-acre experimental ponds disappeared between 10 July and 4 August 1969. Available evidence indicated that all were killed by a large adult mink. The mink selected recently released incubator-hatched ducklings, females in the process of incubating, and adults and juveniles on a marginal food supply.In the second study, 152 wood duck ducklings (Aix sponsa) were released on a 76-acre marsh during 1971. Half of the ducklings, when 24 to 27 days old, were placed at weekly intervals in four floating pens and allowed to escape after 4 days. Each time birds were placed in the floating pens, a comparable group was placed in a predator-proof shoreline pen. Birds in the shoreline pen escaped as they learned to fly when approximately 60 days old. The shoreline of the marsh was periodically searched, and the remains of 21 (28%) of the floating-pen birds were identified in food remains found at 16 mink dens. No remains of birds from the shoreline pen were found at the dens. Coots (Fulica americana) were also taken commonly. Wild ducklings appeared to have been almost totally consumed, but the legs and feet of the wood ducks were often left uneaten because of bands and tags.
","language":"English","publisher":"University of Notre Dame","doi":"10.2307/2424149","usgsCitation":"Sargeant, A.B., Swanson, G.A., and Doty, H.A., 1973, Selective predation by mink, Mustela vison, on waterfowl: American Midland Naturalist, v. 89, no. 1, p. 208-214, https://doi.org/10.2307/2424149.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"208","endPage":"214","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":133311,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"89","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e2e4b07f02db5e4c1e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sargeant, Alan B.","contributorId":89185,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sargeant","given":"Alan","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":310802,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Swanson, George A.","contributorId":49654,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Swanson","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":310804,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Doty, Harold A.","contributorId":17565,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Doty","given":"Harold","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":310803,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Very fine-grained lithic (crystalline) rock fragments, composing about one fifth of the total sample, have mineralogical compositions equivalent to various types of gabbro, anorthositic gabbro, gabbroic anorthosite and troctolite, with minor basalt. The textures now observed in these fragments are in large part metamorphic. Twentyseven electron microprobe analyses of minerals from these fragments are presented, including olivine, plagioclase, pyroxene, spinel, nickel-iron and a Zr-Ti-REE mineral possibly similar to ‘phase B’ of Lovering and Wark (1971). Analyses of seven melt inclusions and twenty-eight defocused beam analyses of lithic fragments are also given. Some of the fragments contain ‘gas’ inclusions which, along with the fine grain size, are believed to indicate final crystallization under low pressure near surface conditions.
