It is suggested that the high alumina quartzite beds are metamorphosed beds of sandy or silty clay; these beds probably represent one stage in the deposition of fine grained clayey clastic sediments. \r\n\r\nNo evidence was found to support the view of Smith and Newcombe (1951) that the kyanite at Henry Knob developed by hudrothermal introduction of alumina. The present study indicates that kyanite in the kyanite quartzite here, as throughout the district, is of metasedimentary origin.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr54248","usgsCitation":"Potter, D.B., 1954, High alumina metamorphic rocks of the Kings Mountain district, North Carolina and South Carolina: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 54-248, 201 p.  :maps ;30 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr54248.","productDescription":"201 p.  :maps ;30 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":148470,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0248/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":44461,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0248/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":44462,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0248/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":44463,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0248/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":44464,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0248/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":44465,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0248/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":44466,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0248/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":44467,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0248/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a61e4b07f02db635ad7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Potter, Donald Brandreth","contributorId":92272,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Potter","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"Brandreth","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":171211,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This region is the source of much \r\nof the water in the Gila, Salt, and Verde Rivers. The region has not previously been systematically studied with respect to the occurrence of ground \r\nwater. \r\n\r\nThe Mogollon Rim is an escarpment that extends about 200 miles in a \r\nnorthwest direction from near Clifton and Morenci in southeastern Arizona and \r\ngradually disappears north of Prescott. Lumbering, ranching, and in local \r\nareas copper mining are the principal industries. Main lines of drainage \r\nextend north on the plateau, north of the rim, and south or southwest below \r\nthe rim. For convenience in discussion and because of structural differences, \r\nthe region has been separated into western, central, and eastern divisions. \r\nPre-Cambrian to Recent rocks crop out. Pre-Cambrian formations \r\nand those of Paleozoic age constitute the thickest sections. Recent basalt \r\nflows cap the plateau portion, except in the central part of the region. Large \r\nareas in valleys below the rim are occupied by lake-bed deposits. The valleys \r\nare aligned northwest, suggesting the possibility that a structural trough extends \r\nalmost the full length of the rim southwest of the scarp. In some areas, \r\nerosion has caused recession of the escarpment for distances of a few miles \r\nto 10 or 15 miles from the major rim faults. \r\n\r\nThe origin of late deposits of sodium Sulfate in the Verde basin has not \r\nbeen adequately, explained. As the salts are concentrated near mineralized \r\ndistricts on the southwest side of the basin, a possible genetic relationship \r\nbetween the two should be considered. \r\n\r\nPre-Cambrian granite and basalt of probable Tertiary and Quaternary \r\nage are the igneous rocks most widely exposed in the region. Diabase dikes \r\nand sills are prominent in some areas; they were intruded probably during \r\nLate Cambrian time. A thickness of 2,000 feet of volcanic rocks of probable \r\nCretaceous and Tertiary age is exposed in one area along the rim, but these \r\nrocks as yet have not been studied in detail. A hypothetical relationship is \r\nadvanced to explain the coincidence in estimated volumes of rock erupted in the \r\nSan Franciscan volcanic field and the volumes displaced by subsidence of the \r\nVerde basin. \r\n\r\nFold structures are relatively uncommon in the region and are of small \r\nextent except the Holbrook dome northwest of Snowflake. High-angle faults, \r\nfor the most part normal, are the most prominent structures identified. \r\nFaults parallel to the rim have been mapped in several areas. The inferred \r\nrelations are shown on three diagrammatic sections. These faults are thought \r\nto account for the presence of two rims in the eastern division, and perhaps \r\nas many as three near Payson. \r\n\r\nMajor orogeny in the region is believed to have occurred four times, \r\nas follows: (1) In the pre-Cambrian; (2) in Miocene(?) time southwest of the Mogollon escarpment; (3) in Pliocene (?) time at least in the Flagstaff area, and; (4) at or near the beginning of Quaternary time. The Laramide structures, prominent elsewhere on the plateau, are reflected only weakly in the rim region, so far as is known.\r\n\r\nStudies of perennial base flow of major streams draining southward from the rim indicate a sustained yield of about 175 cfs (cubic feet per second) measured at existing gaging stations. Runoff records and partial seepage runs show a loss of water between the upper reaches of the streams and the storage reservoirs. There is a general tendency for the water to become progressively more highly mineralized with increasing distance from headwater springs.\r\n\r\nNatural lakes, ponds, swamps, and cienagas are common in the eastern and western divisions of the rim. They lose considerable water, and some are fully desiccated each summer. They are of little use in their present condition, but might be developed as natural water catches from which recharge co","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"[s.n.],","doi":"10.3133/ofr54339","usgsCitation":"Feth, J.H., 1954, Preliminary report of investigations of springs in the Mogollon Rim region Arizona: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 54-339, 77 p. :ill., maps (2 folded) ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr54339.","productDescription":"77 p. :ill., maps (2 folded) ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":147059,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0339/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":42100,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0339/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":42101,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0339/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":42102,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0339/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":42103,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0339/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":42104,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0339/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aafe4b07f02db66cb8a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Feth, J. Roosevelt Lake, has introduced the factor of a rising and fluctuating water table that accentuates the incidence of landsliding. &nbsp;This area was selected for study because of the magnitude of the landslides and the unknown but significant influence of a fluctuating water table. &nbsp;Data resulting from the studies will be summarized in a final report.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr54136","usgsCitation":"Jones, F.O., 1954, Landslide conditions along the Ferry County highway parallelling Lake Roosevelt from Kettle Falls to the mouth of the Spokane River, Washington: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 54-136, Report: 35 p.; 5 Plates: 7.96 x 10.32 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr54136.","productDescription":"Report: 35 p.; 5 Plates: 7.96 x 10.32 inches","numberOfPages":"47","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":147964,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr54136.jpg"},{"id":310221,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0136/report.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":310222,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0136/plate-1.pdf","text":"Plate 1","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":310223,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0136/plate-2.pdf","text":"Plate 2","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":310224,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0136/plate-3.pdf","text":"Plate 3","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":310225,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0136/plate-4.pdf","text":"Plate 4","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":310226,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0136/plate-5.pdf","text":"Plate 5","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","otherGeospatial":"Columbia River, Grand Coulee Dam, Kettle Falls, Lake Roosevelt, Spokane River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -119.64660644531249,\n              47.59875528481801\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.64660644531249,\n              48.680080770292875\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.6141357421875,\n              48.680080770292875\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.6141357421875,\n              47.59875528481801\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.64660644531249,\n              47.59875528481801\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b20e4b07f02db6ab8f7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jones, Fred O.","contributorId":93043,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jones","given":"Fred","email":"","middleInitial":"O.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":169348,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The deposits are pyrometasomatic in origin and are localized along northeast-trending fractures. The eastern deposit is a low-grade disseminated deposit occurring in hornfels. The western deposit occurs as a massive lens of magnetite and garnet with a marble hanging wall and a hornfels footwall. The tenor of mineral rock in the western deposit may average 75 percent of magnetite. The deposit is lenticular and can be followed along strike for 55 feet in outcrop and, where concealed beneath a cover of soil and vegetation, can be followed for an additional 55 feet with a dip needle. Area-capacity tables, prepared on the basis of a hydrographic survey of the lake in 1948-49, show that the capacity of the reservoir was reduced 4.9 percent during the first 14 years after Hoover Dam was completed, but the usable capacity was reduced only 3.2 percent. Practically all of this reduction was caused by accumulation of sediment in the reservoir. Studies of inflow and outflow indicate that the reservoir has a total storage capacity about 12 percent greater than that shown by the area-capacity table, because of 'bank' storage, or ground-water storage in the bottom and sides of the reservoir. Thus the total capacity in 1949 was greater than the quantity shown by the original area-capacity table, even though large quantities of sediment had been deposited in the reservoir during the 14 years. \r\n\r\n\r\nAccording to computations of the volume and weight of the accumulated sediment, about 2,000 million tons were deposited in the reservoir by the Colorado River in 14 years; this is within 2 percent of the amount calculated from measurements of the suspended sediment carried by the in flowing rivers. It is estimated that the sediment capacity of the reservoir, when filled to the level of the permanent spillway crest, is about 75,000 million tons. The sediment contributed by the Colorado River averages about 45 percent sand and 55 percent silt and clay. \r\n\r\n\r\nIf the sediment carried by the river in the years 1926-50 represents the long-term average rate of accumulation in Lake Mead, it will be a century before the sediment at the dam reaches the level of the lowest gates in the intake towers, and more than 4 centuries before the reservoir is filled with sediment to the level of the permanent spillway crest. The rate of sedimentation since the first year of Lake Mead (1935) has been about 20 percent lower, and if that rate continues in the future, the life of the reservoir will be correspondingly greater. Construction of upstream reservoirs to capture some of the inflowing sediment, or transportation of sediment in the outflow through Hoover Dam, would also increase the life of the reservoir. \r\n\r\n\r\nIn the first 12 years of Lake Mead, the dissolved mineral matter in the outflowing water was significantly greater than the average in the in flowing water, owing in part to solution of gypsum and rock salt from the bed of the reservoir. Currently the increased dissolved solids in the outflowing water can be accounted for almost entirely by evaporation from the reservoir, which is about 5 fo 7 percent of the annual inflow. The water from Lake Mead is habitually of better quality than that diverted from the river for irrigation prior to regulation by Hoover Dam, because it represents an average of the poor water of low stages and the excellent water from melting snow. \r\n\r\n\r\nGeodetic surveys of the Lake Mead area show that the weight of water has caused subsidence of the earth's crust amounting to about 120 millimeter at Hoover Dam, and an even greater amount in the principal area of storage in the reservoir.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/cir346","usgsCitation":"Thomas, H.E., 1954, First Fourteen Years of Lake Mead: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 346, vi, 27 p. :maps, diagrs., tables. ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir346.","productDescription":"vi, 27 p. :maps, diagrs., tables. ;27 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":125094,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1954/0346/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":30375,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1954/0346/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b32e4b07f02db6b4722","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Thomas, Harold E.","contributorId":36116,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thomas","given":"Harold","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":146728,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Abnormal radioactivity was recorded in 8 of the 10 areas surveyed. The anomalies are located in Bradford, Clay, Columbia, DeSoto, Dixie, Lake, Marion, Orange, Sumter, Taylor, and Union Counties. \r\n\r\nTwo of the anomalies were investigated briefly on the ground. One resulted from a deposit of river-pebble phosphate in the Peace River valley; the river-pebble samples contain an average of 0.013 percent equivalent uranium. The other anomaly resulted from outcrops of leached phosphatic rock containing as much as 0. 016 percent equivalent uranium. An average of about 3, 040 million gallons of water was withdrawn from the streams and from the ground each day. Of this amount, nearly 190 million gallons per day (mgd), or 6 percent, was for domestic public water supply. Industry, including public utilities generating steam for electric energy, used approximately 2, 900 mgd, of which about 42 mgd was purchased from public supply sources. In spite of this tremendous demand for water, a sufficient quantity was available to satisfy the needs of the area without serious difficulty. Acid mine drainage presents the greatest single pollution problem in the Pittsburgh area at the present time (1953) because no practical means has been found for its control. The waters of several of the rivers are strongly acid for this reason. Of the three major rivers in the area, Monongahela River waters have the greatest acid concentration and Allegheny River waters the least. Untreated domestic and industrial wastes are additional sources of stream pollution in the area. Much of the water is hard and corrosive, and occasionally has objectionable color, odor, and taste. The treatment used by public water-supply systems using river water is adequate at all times for removal of water-borne causes of disease. Attention is being concentrated on improving the quality of present supplies rather than developing new supplies from upstream tributaries. Present supplies are being improved by providing treatment facilities for disposal of wastes,, by reduction of acid mine drainage discharged into the streams, and by providing storage to augment low flows. The underground water resources are vitally important to the area. The use of ground water in the Pittsburgh area has doubled in the past two decades and in 1951 more ground water was used in Allegheny County than in any other county in Pennsylvania. On the average about 63 mgd was pumped from the ground, not including 1.5 mgd pumped for air conditioning. Most of the present-day wells in the \"Triangle area\" of Pittsburgh have large yields and many operate continuously throughout the summer. The result has been a marked seasonal decline in water levels in some parts of the Triangle area, especially near the center of pumping. It appears that the maximum rate of summertime use has been reached in this localized area. Water from wells near rivers often has chemical characteristics similar to those of water from the adjacent stream because the well water is supplied largely by river infiltration. The ground water in the Pittsburgh area is generally more highly mineralized than surface water, harder, and contains higher concentrations of iron and manganese, all the result of solution of aquifer minerals by the water during its passage through the ground. Nevertheless, ground water commonly is less corrosive than surface water, contains little or no suspended sediment, and is free of pathogenic bacteria. Both sediment and bacteria are present in considerable quantities in the river water of this area. Water from wells supplied largely by river infiltration may have a temperature variation throughout a year of as much as 30 to 35 F and a variation in hardness of as much as 130 ppm. Certain types of chemicals having objectionable tastes and odors are not always removed by the natural infiltration of the river water to wells but pathogenic bacteria and sediment are. There is only a small range throughout a year in the temperature and chemical quality of water in individual wells farther from the rivers. Such water is generally harder and contains more dissolved solids than water supplied by river infiltration. There is no immediate likelihood of a shortage of water in the area. Present withdrawals of surface water are spread throughout the major river valleys so that the water returned to the stream after use is available for reuse in essentially undiminished quantity. Ground-water use can be increased manyfold without depleting the supply if advantage is taken of the favorable opportunities for inducing the infiltration of surface water into the alluvial aquifers in the major stream valleys. Ground-water recharge supplied by the rivers will reduce the local flow of the rivers by the amount of the infiltration; however most of the ground water used is discharged to streams near the areas of withdrawal. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/cir315","usgsCitation":"Noecker, M., Greenman, D., and Beamer, N., 1954, Water resources of the Pittsburgh area, Pennsylvania: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 315, iv, 56 p. :ill., maps (some col.) ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir315.","productDescription":"iv, 56 p. :ill., maps (some col.) ;27 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":30633,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1954/0315/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":30634,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1954/0315/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":30635,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1954/0315/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":117197,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1954/0315/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f4e4b07f02db5f03ee","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Noecker, Max","contributorId":39349,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Noecker","given":"Max","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147234,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Greenman, D.W.","contributorId":81072,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Greenman","given":"D.W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147235,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Beamer, N.H.","contributorId":84346,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Beamer","given":"N.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147236,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
