S. Geological Survey in October 1951. From June to November 1952, an area of about 750 square miles was examined for uranium deposits, and 211 localities having abnormally high radioactivity were found; uranium minerals are visible at 121 of these localities. \n\nAll known uranium mineralization in the area is restricted to sandstones of the Wasatch formation, except sparsely disseminated uranium in the sandstone of the White River formation, which caps the Pumpkin Buttes, mid several localities on the Great Pine Ridge southwest of the Pumpkin Buttes where iron-saturated sandstone and clinker in the Fort Union formation have above-normal radioactivity. The uranium occurrences in the Wasatch formation are in a red sandstone zone 450 to 900 feet above the base of the formation and are of two types: small concretionary masses of uranium, iron, manganese and vanadium minerals in sandstone, and irregular zones in which uranium minerals are disseminated in sandstone. The stripping-coal reserves are located in the lower and middle members of the Tertiary coal-bearing formation. Five continuous beds in the middle member range in thickness from 5 to 30 feet, and a discontinuous bed at the base of the lower member is about 60 feet thick. Analyses of outcrop samples, as received at the laboratory, show a heating content of 7,500--8,200 Btu, an ash content of 6 to 14 percent, and a moisture content of 25 percent. The reserve estimate is based on a maximum thickness of overburden of 200 feet. Coal below the level of Lignite Creek or its major tributaries was not considered as it was assumed that stripping would be by hydraulic methods. Uncertainties regarding the position of the coal outcrops and the extent of burning of the coal beds are the basis for a recommendation that, where possible, the stripping reserves be tested by drilling. \r\n\r\nOverburden consists largely of weakly consolidated sandstone and includes some coarse gravel and a few boulders 20 feet or more in diameter. Water for hydraulic mining can be obtained from the Nenana River. Lignite Creek does not appear to be a dependable source. Disposal of debris may affect the channel of the Nenana River causing damage to railroads and structures. The deposit, in sec. 6, T. 9.7 S., R. 3 W., Piute County, Utah, is about 1 mile west of the Bullion Monarch mine which is in the central producing area of the Marysvale uranium district. \r\n\r\nHornfels, formed by contact metamorphism of rocks of the Bullion Canyon volcanics borderhug the margin of a quartz monzonite stock, is in fault contact with the later Mount Belknap rhyolite. The hornfels was intensely altered by hydrothermal solutions in pre-Mount Belknap time. Hematite-alunite-quartz-kaolinite rock, the most completely altered hornfels, is surrounded by orange to white argillized hornfels containing beidellite-montmorillonite clay, and secondary uranium minerals. The secondary uranium minerals probably have been derived from pitchblende, the primary ore mineral in other deposits of the Marysvale area. \r\n\r\nThe two uranium-rich zones, 4 feet ad 5 feet thick, have been traced on the surface for 60 feet and 110 feet, respectively. Very good correlations between F, C032, and P205 were found in several of the samples.\r\n\r\nThe size of phosphate pellets was measured in thin sections of two sets of close samples. Frequency histograms and cumulative curves were plotted from these size measurements, but when compared with uranium concentration for each \r\nsample, no significant correlation between size and uranium concentration was \r\ndiscovered. \r\n\r\nAnalyses of these samples for P2O5, CaO, organic matter, and equivalent ura- \r\nnium are presented in a previous report by this writer (U. S. Gool. Survey Bull. 988-D). In two sets of samples a good correlation was found between equivalent uranium and each of the other components. The adsorbent used was radioactive Cs137 in a solution of Cs 137Cl. Natural quartz crystals adsorbed more cesium than the synthetic crystals.
