The part of the limestone that represents a hydrologic unit, as much as 1000 feet thick, ranges in age from middle Eocene to middle Miocene. That unit is the principal artesian aquifer in Florida and southeastern Georgia. It is also an aquifer, but of lesser importance, in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Alabama. In southeastern Florida the Quaternary limestone forms a shallow, although highly productive, aquifer.

In general, the Tertiary formations dip gently toward the coast, except where the regional dip is interrupted by folds such as the Cape Fear arch, the Ocala uplift, and the Chattahoochee anticline, or by faults such as those on the Ocala uplift.

A piezometric map showing the head of water in the principal artesian aquifer in Florida and southeastern Georgia reveals chief areas of recharge where limestone crops out in interstream areas and where sinkholes breach overlying beds; it reveals principal discharge areas in certain stream valleys, springs, and offshore.

Lateral movement of the water in the limestone is generally controlled by the hydraulic gradient to the nearest discharge area. The movement may be either controlled by or independent of faults and folds; it may be along joints for short distances. Solution by downward movement of water in the zone of aeration to the water table has formed vertical tubular openings or shafts. Lateral movement of the water from areas of recharge to areas of discharge has formed caves and other solution channels, chiefly in the upper part of the zone of saturation. Since they were formed, some caves have been drowned, and others have been exposed in the zone of aeration as the water rose and fell, chiefly in Pleistocene time. The principal aquifer in Florida probably has caves and solution channels comparable in size and extent to those of Mammoth Cave, Kentucky; however, only a small percentage of these are above the water table at the present time.

In a large part of the region the most noticeable change in chemical quality of the water in the limestone resulting from circulation of water is the freshening accompanying removal of salty water from the aquifer.

Changes in sea level during Pleistocene time have raised and lowered the water table; thus the position of the upper part of the zone of saturation, in which conditions were most favorable for solution and for the formation of cavities, has changed repeatedly. At the lowest stand of the Pleistocene sea, it is conceivable that the water level in part of the limestone in north-central Florida was a few hundred feet lower than at present. The present pattern of solution openings probably was developed in Pleistocene time.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/SPE93-p1","usgsCitation":"Stringfield, V.T., and LeGrand, H.E., 1966, Hydrology of limestone terranes in the coastal plain of the Southeastern United States: Special Paper of the Geological Society of America, v. 93, p. 1-46, https://doi.org/10.1130/SPE93-p1.","productDescription":"46 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"46","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":386303,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Southeastern United States","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -94.1748046875,\n 25.085598897064752\n ],\n [\n -73.2568359375,\n 25.085598897064752\n ],\n [\n -73.2568359375,\n 36.42128244364947\n ],\n [\n -83.75976562499999,\n 36.421282443649496\n ],\n [\n -94.1748046875,\n 36.42128244364947\n ],\n [\n -94.1748046875,\n 25.085598897064752\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"93","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1966-01-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stringfield, V. Measurements indicate that evaporation and condensation are negligible compared with the large runoff and precipitation values. Runoff, measured by a stream discharge station, averaged 4.04 m/yr; precipitation, determined by snow accumulation measurements at a central point on the glacier and by storage gages, averaged 3.82 m/yr, resulting in a basin net loss of about 0.22 m/yr. During the same period, South Cascade Glacier net budgets were determined by ablation stakes, snow density-depth profiles, and maps. The average glacier net budget for the period was −0.61sol;yr of water. This amount is equivalent to −0.26 m of water when averaged over the drainage basin (43% glacier-covered), which is in fair agreement with the net storage change measured by hydrologic methods. Agreement between the two methods for individual years is slightly less perfect.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/WR002i001p00105","usgsCitation":"Tangborn, W.V., 1966, Glacier mass budget measurements by hydrologic means: Water Resources Research, v. 2, no. 1, p. 105-110, https://doi.org/10.1029/WR002i001p00105.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"105","endPage":"110","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":622,"text":"Washington Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":321910,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","otherGeospatial":"South Cascade Glacier","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -121.09182357788086,\n              48.34118976566224\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.0370635986328,\n              48.34118976566224\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.0370635986328,\n              48.3807678494171\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.09182357788086,\n              48.3807678494171\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.09182357788086,\n              48.34118976566224\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"2","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2010-07-09","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"574eb5cbe4b0ee97d51a83c1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tangborn, Wendell V.","contributorId":32152,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tangborn","given":"Wendell","email":"","middleInitial":"V.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":630949,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The purpose of this report is to make the hydrologic data obtained during the study of ground water in the alluvium along the Arkansas River in Le Flore and Haskell Counties readily available to the public. The data in this report should be useful in predicting geologic and hydrologic conditions when drilling new wells. Table 1 gives information on the sizes, depths, yields, and other characteristics of wells in the area. The table also provides a key to the additional information for each well site given in tables 2 through 6. Table 2 gives logs for the materials penetrated at test holes and wells in the report area; table 3 gives depths to water measured in wells; table 4 includes chemical analyses of water from wells; table 5 gives laboratory determinations of particle-size distribution of earth samples collected from test holes and wells; and table 6 gives coefficients of permeability and other hydrologic properties of earth samples from the selected test holes. Similar data for Sequoyah County, Muskogee County, and Wagoner-Rogers Counties are available in other open-file reports.\r\nAn interpretive report, 'Hydrology of the alluvium of the Arkansas River, Muskogee, Oklahoma, to Fort Smith, Arkansas,' by Harry H. Crest-stage gages are used to determine the elevation of a peak stage occurring at a specific location in a stream.
\n
A crest-stage gage consists of a length of 14-inch diameter pipe installed in a vertical position in the stream channel (figure 1). The pipe is vented and equipped with an intake system that allows water to enter and leave the pipe as the stream rises and recedes. An equal length of aluminum \"T\" channel (staff) is inserted in the pipe and made to rest on a positive stop called a datum pin. When granulated cork is placed in the gage, the cork will float on the rising stage, then adhere to the staff after the stage recedes. The peak stage is then determined by removing the staff and measuring the distance between the cork line and the lower end of the staff.
\n
The primary purpose of a crest-stage gaging station is to collect hydrologic data for flood-frequency analyses. Collection of data for such analyses involves operating a network of stations for a period of years until sufficient peak flow data are obtained to accurately define flood-frequency curves. Because carelessness in collecting data at the gage site might result in the loss of an entire year's flood event, the importance of proper operation and maintenance of these gages can not be overemphasized.
\n
Peak discharges are related to the basin characteristics and major changes in these characteristics must be evaluated. For€st fires, timber harvest, or a new road location that alters the natural drainage of the basin, may effect the intensity and timing of the runoff of the basin.
\n
Rigid datum controls must be maintained at the gage site throughout the period of record. Physical changes of the site resulting from flood flows or manmade alterations must be evaluated. If a drainage structure such as a culvert is part of the site features, free-flow conditions must be maintained or obstructions carefully documented.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Portland, OR","doi":"10.3133/ofr6645","usgsCitation":"Friday, J., 1965, The operation and maintenance of a crest-stage gaging station: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 66-45, vi, 20 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6645.","productDescription":"vi, 20 p.","numberOfPages":"28","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":518,"text":"Oregon Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":173959,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr6645.jpg"},{"id":324122,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0045/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a80e4b07f02db64935b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Friday, John","contributorId":19160,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Friday","given":"John","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":245520,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
