Exposed sedimentary rocks range in age from the Halgaito tongue of the Cutler\nformation (Permian) to the Salt Wash member of the Morrison formation (Jurassic), The dominant structural element of the area is the Monument upwarp, a arge asymmetrical anticline whose northern end is near the junction of the Green and Colorado Rivers in Utah, and whose southern end disappears near Kayenta, Ariz. Asymmetrical anticlines with steeply dipping east flanks and gently dipping west flanks are superimposed on the upwarp. These subsidiary structures trend north. The uranium ore bodies are localized in conglomeratic sandstone of the Upper Triassic Shinarump conglomerate that fills channels scoured in the underlying Lower and Middle (?) Triassic Moenkopi formation. These channels range from relatively narrow and shallow ones 15 feet wide and 10 feet deep to much broader and deeper ones 2,300 feet wide and 70 feet deep. Two types of channels can be distinguished-r-a short-type less than 2 miles Iong 5 and a long-type traceable for distances greater than 2 miles Plant matter in the form of trees, branches,'and twigs was deposited with Shinarump sediments in the channels. It is suggested that when the Shinarump conglomerate was invaded by mineralizing solutions the uranium ore was deposited primarily in localities formerly occupied by the plant material. Further, it is suggested that the short channels are more likely to have ore accumulations than long channels.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei340","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Witkind, I.J., 1954, Localization of uranium minerals in channel sediments at the base of the Shinarump conglomerate, Monument Valley, Arizona: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 340, Report: 43 p.; 2 Plates: 29.10 x 17.55 inches and 22.02 x 19.71 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tei340.","productDescription":"Report: 43 p.; 2 Plates: 29.10 x 17.55 inches and 22.02 x 19.71 inches","numberOfPages":"43","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":277456,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/340/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":285789,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0340/figure-5.pdf"},{"id":285790,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0340/figure-8.pdf"},{"id":285791,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0340/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona","county":"Apache County","otherGeospatial":"Monument Valley","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -110.489502,36.658505 ], [ -110.489502,37.262031 ], [ -109.677887,37.262031 ], [ -109.677887,36.658505 ], [ -110.489502,36.658505 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"52303f64e4b04b8e63a20647","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Witkind, I. The district is composed largely of pre-Jurassic metamorphic and igneous rocks, which are chiefly if not entirely pre-Cambrian in age. The metamorphic and igneous rocks are overlain by sandstone of the Morrison formation of Jurassic age, and by volcanic rocks of the Alboroto group and Hinsdale formation of Miocene and Pliocene (?) age, respectively.
\n
\n
The thorium deposits occur in or near alkalic igneous rocks in which such elements as titanium, rare earths, barium, strontium, and niobium occur in greater-than-average amounts. The greatest mass of the alkalic igneous rocks the Iron Hill composite stoc,- occupies an area of 12 square miles in the southeastern part of the district. The age of the thorium deposits, like that of the alkalic igneous rocks, is not known other than pre-Jurassic.
\n
\n
The thorium veins and mineralized shear zones range from a few inches to 18 feet in thickness and from a few feet to 3,500 feet in length. The veins are composed of calcite,.dolomite, siderite, ankerite, quartz, barite, pyrite, sphalerite, galena, goethite,. apatite, alkali feldspar, and many other minerals. The thorium occurs at least partly in thorite or hydrothorite. Sparse xenotime has been tentatively identified in one deposit. Several minerals containing rare earths of the cerium group as major constituents are found in carbonate veins near Iron Hill. Bastnaesite has been identified by X-ray methods, and cerite and synchisite are probably present also.The fluorapatite in some veins and in parts of the carbonate rock mass that occupies 2 square miles in the central part of the Iron Hill complex contains rare earths of the cerium group, generally in amounts of a fraction of a percent of the rock.
\n
\n
The radioactivity of the deposits appears to be due almost entirely to thorium and its daughter products The ThO2 content of selected highgrade samples from the Little Johnnie vein is as much as 4 percent. The ThO2 content of the veins is generally less than 1 percent, however, and is only 0.05 to 0.1 percent in many of the veins studied.
\n
\n
The little Johnnie vein, which was mapped in detail, can be traced discontinuously for a distance of more than 3,500 feet. The thoriumbearing material occurs as irregular veinlets and thin films introduced into the fault zone. The mineralized shear zone ranges from less than 6 inches to 5 feet in thickness. Near its west end the vein is broken by many faults in a zone that marks the edge of a roughly circular fault block, 11/2.miles in diameter, that has dropped 1,000 feet or more since the deposition of Miocene volcanic-rocks that now floor the Milkranch basin.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei353","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Olson, J.C., and Wallace, S., 1954, Thorium and rare earth minerals in the Powderhorn district, Gunnison County, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 353, Report: 58 p.; 2 Plates: 20.93 x 11.91 inches and 9.29 x 11.96 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tei353.","productDescription":"Report: 58 p.; 2 Plates: 20.93 x 11.91 inches and 9.29 x 11.96 inches","numberOfPages":"58","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":288854,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":288851,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0353/figure-2.pdf"},{"id":288852,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0353/figure-3.pdf"},{"id":288853,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0353/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","county":"Gunnison County","otherGeospatial":"Powderhorn District","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -109.0603,36.9924 ], [ -109.0603,41.0024 ], [ -102.0416,41.0024 ], [ -102.0416,36.9924 ], [ -109.0603,36.9924 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"523979fde4b04b9308ae4fbc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Olson, Jerry C.","contributorId":89202,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Olson","given":"Jerry","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":484022,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wallace, Stewart R.","contributorId":53371,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wallace","given":"Stewart R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":484021,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Abnormal radioactivity at these localities is due to concentrations of primary and secondary uranium minerals, to radon gas, radium (?), and to thorium minerals. Of the known occurrences only three were thought to contain uranium oxide (uranitite or pitchblende), 4 contained uranium-bearing columbate, tantalate, or titanate minerals, 12 contained secondary uranium minerals, such as autunite, carnotite, and torbernite, one contained radon gas, 7 contained thorium minerals, and, at the remaining 16 localities, the source of the anomalous radiation was not positively determined.
\n
\n
The occurrences in which uranium oxide has been tentatively identified include the Rathgeb mine (Calaveras County), the Yerih group of claims (San Bernardino County), and the Rainbow claim (Madera County). Occurrences of secondary uranium minerals are largely confined to the arid desert regions of south-eastern California including deposits in San Bernardino, Kern, Inyo, and Imperial Counties. Uranium-bearing columbate, tantalate, or titanate minerals have been reported from pegmatite and granitic rock in southeastern and eastern California.
\n
\n
Thorium minerals have been found in vein deposits in eastern San Bernardino County and from pegmatites and granitic rocks in various parts of southeastern California; placer concentrations of thorium minerals are known from nearly all areas in the State that are underlain, in part, by plutonic crystalline rocks.
\n
\n
The primary uranium minerals occur principally as minute accessory crystals in pegmatite or granitic rock, or with base-metal sulfide minerals in veins. Thorium minerals also occur as accessory crystals in pegmatite or granitic rock, in placer deposits derived from such rock, and, at Mountain Pass, in veins containing rare earths. Secondary uranium minerals have been found as fracture coatings and as disseminations in various types of wall rock, although they are largely confined to areas of Tertiary volcanic rocks. Probably the uranium in the uraniferous deposits in California is related genetically to felsic crystalline rocks and felsic volcanic rocks; the present distribution of the secondary uranium minerals has been controlled, in part, by circulating ground waters and probably, in part, by magmatic waters related to the Tertiary volcanic activity. The thorium minerals are genetically related to the intrusion of pegmatite and plutonic crystalline rocks.
\n
\n
None of the known deposits of radioactive minerals in California contain marketable reserves of uranium or thorium ore under economic conditions existing in 1952. With a favorable local market small lots of uranium ore may be available in the following places: the Rosamund prospect, the Rafferty and Chilson properties, the Lucky Star claim, and the Yerih group. The commercial production of thorium minerals will be possible, in the near future, only if these minerals can be recovered cheaply as a byproduct either from the mining of rare earths minerals at Mountain Pass or as a byproduct of placer mining for gold.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei229","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.","usgsCitation":"Walker, G.W., and Lovering, T., 1954, Radioactive deposits in California: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 229, Report: 69 p.; Plate: 15.74 x 19.77 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tei229.","productDescription":"Report: 69 p.; Plate: 15.74 x 19.77 inches","numberOfPages":"78","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":288850,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":288848,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0229/plate-1.pdf"},{"id":288849,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0229/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -124.41,32.53 ], [ -124.41,42.01 ], [ -114.13,42.01 ], [ -114.13,32.53 ], [ -124.41,32.53 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53ae77fde4b0abf75cf2c688","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Walker, George W.","contributorId":101308,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Walker","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":494447,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lovering, Tom G.","contributorId":31679,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lovering","given":"Tom G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":494446,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Its petrography and structure are discussed here and conclusions are drawn as to its mode of emplacement. The stock consists of plutonic and hypabyssal rocks which intrude folded Ordovician (?) schist and quartzite. The longer axis, trending north-northwest across the strike of the country rock, is 3 miles long, and the shorter one about 2 1/2 miles. Essentially the stock consists of quartz syenite, but it encloses a long arcuate mass of older essexite and transition rock, and along its eastern edge are later intrusions of granite. Late dikes of various compositions cut the plutonics and surrounding metamorphic rocks. The following facts have been established: (1) The igneous rocks are typical representatives of the White Mountain magma series (Mississippian?), quite lacking in foliation and lineation. (2) The stock is discordant and has an elliptical ground plan. (3) In detail the boundary is irregular and characterized by abundant dikes and xenoliths. (4) The igneous rocks make sharp contacts with the metamorphosed country rock. (5) The arcuate mass of older essexite is undoubtedly a screen. (6) The small bodies of late granite resemble ring dikes. (7) The stock is cut by prominent sets of steeply dipping radial and tangential joints. (8) The late dikes show radial and tangential patterns. (9) Along the northern and southern margins of the stock the country rock shows strikes and dips which differ from the regional ones. The Nonesuch shale, of late Keweenawan age, is about 600 feet thick and is composed largely of gray siltstone. It overlies 2,300 to 5,500 feet of red sandstones and conglomerates, the Copper Harbor conglomerate. This formation, in turn, overlies the middle Keweenawan Portage Lake lava series, in which occur the famous native-copper deposits of the south shore of Lake Superior. The White Pine mine is 45 to 70 miles west-southwest of the principal native copper mines.The copper-bearing beds at White Pine are primarily in the lower 20to 25 feet of the Nonesuch shale. This cupriferous zone is divided in local usage into four stratigraphic units, which are, in ascending order, the lower sandstone (the uppermost bed of the Copper Harbor conglomerate), the parting shale, the upper sandstone, and the upper shale. The sequence of beds is almost identical in the upper and parting shales, suggesting cyclic sedimentation. This sequence and the distribution of sedimentary facies are attributed to two submergences, separated by an emergence, of a deltaic area.Practically all the copper occurs in the upper and parting shales, except in a small area near the White Pine fault where it is abundant in the upper and lower sandstones. It is present in five different layers in amounts that average from 1 to 3 percent. The total amount of copper in each bed is generally higher where the bed is thick, and thickness, in turn, seems to be greatest in areas that were hollows away from the main channel or channels of the ancient delta. Copper content of the shale beds typically decreases as their sand content increases. The extent of individual copper-bearing beds 1 to 3 feet thick is measurable in square miles.The local occurrence of copper in the upper and lower sandstone beds can be reasonably explained as the result of hydrothermal transportation from the White Pine fault up the dip of the relatively permeable sandstone to the crest of an adjacent anticline. Distribution of copper in the parting and upper shales, on the other hand, seems to be completely independent of local structure, faults, and rock permeability. For the area as a whole the control is lithologic and stratigraphic. Probably the copper was dropped into or precipitated within the original mud; it may conceivably have replaced with exquisite detail something else that was so deposited.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geological Institute","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.49.7.675","usgsCitation":"White, W.S., and Wright, J.C., 1954, The White Pine copper deposit, Ontonagon County, Michigan: Economic Geology, v. 49, no. 7, p. 675-716, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.49.7.675.","productDescription":"42 p.","startPage":"675","endPage":"716","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":383064,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Michigan","county":"Ontonagon County","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-89.8875,46.7677],[-89.8767,46.7758],[-89.8441,46.8],[-89.822,46.8093],[-89.8188,46.8103],[-89.7952,46.8168],[-89.7769,46.8223],[-89.7624,46.8236],[-89.7433,46.8282],[-89.7156,46.8311],[-89.6904,46.8317],[-89.6891,46.8317],[-89.6686,46.8336],[-89.6533,46.8312],[-89.6282,46.8212],[-89.6163,46.8205],[-89.6065,46.8235],[-89.5953,46.827],[-89.5855,46.8295],[-89.5658,46.8336],[-89.5605,46.8347],[-89.5579,46.8347],[-89.5534,46.8376],[-89.5488,46.839],[-89.5434,46.8364],[-89.5282,46.8395],[-89.5191,46.8424],[-89.5112,46.8435],[-89.4944,46.8402],[-89.4837,46.8386],[-89.4705,46.8389],[-89.442,46.84],[-89.438,46.8405],[-89.4295,46.8421],[-89.4078,46.8462],[-89.4045,46.8472],[-89.3868,46.8531],[-89.3658,46.8581],[-89.3541,46.863],[-89.3449,46.8659],[-89.3319,46.8726],[-89.3097,46.8813],[-89.2987,46.8871],[-89.2855,46.8901],[-89.2653,46.8983],[-89.2359,46.9099],[-89.2203,46.918],[-89.2011,46.9349],[-89.1985,46.9368],[-89.196,46.9401],[-89.1877,46.9485],[-89.1851,46.9513],[-89.1768,46.9602],[-89.1717,46.9649],[-89.1567,46.9711],[-89.1491,46.9818],[-89.1433,46.9861],[-89.1355,46.9895],[-89.129,46.9937],[-89.1244,46.9947],[-89.1237,46.9947],[-89.119,46.9939],[-89.1134,46.9876],[-89.0847,46.9849],[-89.0828,46.9849],[-89.0768,46.986],[-89.0709,46.9875],[-89.0578,46.9923],[-89.0545,46.9937],[-89.0427,46.9981],[-89.0249,47.0016],[-89.0209,47.0022],[-89.022,46.9966],[-89.0173,46.9949],[-88.9948,46.9967],[-88.9783,47.0011],[-88.9678,47.0045],[-88.9567,47.0098],[-88.947,47.0173],[-88.9438,47.021],[-88.9405,47.0229],[-88.9399,47.0238],[-88.9355,47.0294],[-88.934,46.9358],[-88.9328,46.8499],[-88.9317,46.7655],[-88.8641,46.7658],[-88.8645,46.7415],[-88.8643,46.6795],[-88.9537,46.6803],[-88.9821,46.6802],[-88.9921,46.68],[-88.9927,46.591],[-88.9927,46.5759],[-88.9927,46.4182],[-88.9921,46.3311],[-89.0513,46.3314],[-89.1159,46.3315],[-89.2404,46.3328],[-89.3661,46.3329],[-89.3655,46.3948],[-89.3652,46.4182],[-89.365,46.5044],[-89.4924,46.5053],[-89.6113,46.5054],[-89.7388,46.5071],[-89.7377,46.5919],[-89.8363,46.5933],[-89.866,46.5934],[-89.8648,46.6348],[-89.8638,46.6788],[-89.864,46.71],[-89.864,46.7224],[-89.863,46.7674],[-89.8875,46.7677]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Ontonagon\",\"state\":\"MI\"}}]}","volume":"49","issue":"7","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1954-11-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"White, Walter Stanley","contributorId":96701,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"White","given":"Walter","email":"","middleInitial":"Stanley","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":809894,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wright, James C.","contributorId":83936,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wright","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":809895,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Partly marine and partly continental in the thick western sections, it is entirely continental in the east. Invertebrate faunas indicate that deposition began either during or preceding the middle of the Early Triassic (Meekoceras zone) and continued into late Early Triassic (Tirolites zone) and probably into Medial Triassic time. Studies of the deposits indicate three major transgressions and three regressions across southern Utah and northern Arizona. Analysis of sedimentary rock types and original structures in them suggests a complex mixture of environments involved in the development of the formation: stream beds, lagoons, playas, flood plains or tidal flats, shallow sea floors, and others. According to present dating, geosynclinal deposition spread eastward in Late Jurassic time to include Cuba, farther eastward and southward in Early Cretaceous time to include Hispaniola and probably Jamaica, and still farther eastward in Late Cretaceous time to include Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and St. Croix. Throughout the Caribbean region, the Cretaceous is characterized by volcanics of great thickness, pyroclastics being more widespread and thicker than flows. These volcanics evidently were derived from lands of unknown size that are now under the waters of the Caribbean Sea. Land still persisted south of eastern Cuba during Eocene time. Thereafter no geological evidence is now available pointing to land in the Caribbean Sea. © 1954, The Geological Society of America, Inc.
","language":"English ","publisher":"Geological Society of America ","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1954)65[719:CLASTT]2.0.CO;2","issn":"00167606","usgsCitation":"Woodring, W.P., 1954, Caribbean land and sea through the ages : Geological Society of America Bulletin, v. 65, no. 8, p. 719-732, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1954)65[719:CLASTT]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"14 p. Mex. A uranium-bearing coal in the Allison-Gibson members of the Cretaceous Mesaverde formation crops out in erosional remnants of the mesa.The coal is capped by a well-fractured 65-foot sandstone bed through which roots of a pinyon-juniper forest penetrate. Samples of several hundred branches of trees growing on top of the mesa were collected and analyzed for uranium. The assays ranged from 0.1 part per million to 2.3 ppm uranium in the wood ash. Dead branches, which were found to contain more uranium in the ash than live branches, were sampled where possible. The results have been contoured to indicated probable areas of mineralized coal. Parts of the north butte are recommended as favorable for physical exploration.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/tei471","collaboration":"Report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.","usgsCitation":"Starrett, H., and Cannon, H., 1954, Botanical prospecting for uranium on La Ventana Mesa, Sandoval County, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 471, 16 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/tei471.","productDescription":"16 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":283493,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/tei471.png"},{"id":284570,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0471/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Mexico","county":"Sandoval County","otherGeospatial":"La Ventana Mesa","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -107.6265,35.1977 ], [ -107.6265,36.2198 ], [ -106.2452,36.2198 ], [ -106.2452,35.1977 ], [ -107.6265,35.1977 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53558fcde4b0120853e8be5e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Starrett, H.","contributorId":65766,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Starrett","given":"H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":491359,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cannon, Helen L.","contributorId":96249,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cannon","given":"Helen L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":491360,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Another and very important application is shown to be the sampling and study of decomposed bedrock, in regions where outcrops of hardrock are scarce or lacking. This technique was proposed and used by Derby, an American geologist who worked for many years in Brazil. The importance of this method has not been generally recognized, and the writer recalls it to the attention of geologists. An important application is shown to exist in the study of the decomposed bedrock, known as saprolite, that is so widespread in the Piedmont province of the southeastern United States. Using this technique, two projects have already been successfully completed in this region, and the success attained in both sets a new standard for geological exploration and mapping in areas where saprolite constitutes the dominant type of exposure. The technique of panning for heavy and semiheavy accessory minerals is described. Types of pans, factors in panning, the operation of panning, and the processing of concentrates in the field are briefly discussed. The gold pan, in the hands of an experienced operator, is shown to be a versatile and efficient field tool, which is completely independent of laboratory facilities. © 1954 Society of Economic Geologists, Inc.
","language":"English ","publisher":"Society of Economic Geologists ","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.49.6.639","issn":"03610128","usgsCitation":"Mertie, J., 1954, The gold pan: A neglected geological tool: Economic Geology, v. 49, no. 6, p. 639-651, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.49.6.639.","productDescription":"13 p.
