In June 1972, tropical storm Agnes caused severe flooding within a broad area extending from North Carolina to Southern New York. Flood elevations along the Susquehanna River were the highest ever recorded. In the Wilkes-Barre area, flood elevations exceeded those of 1865 and 1936 by about eight feet. Maximum discharges were about 40 percent greater than those of a 50-year flood. Property damages from flooding in the Wyoming Valley, in which Wilkes-Barre lies, far exceeded those in any are of similar size affected by the storm. The extent of the flooding on the map was delineated by the U.S. Geological Survey from field surveys made soon after the flood. Sections of levees and railroad grades that were not overtopped are not delineated.

Highly anomalous metal contents are found in stream sediment, soil, and outcrop samples collected within this area. The area is underlain by intrusive granodiorite to quartz diorite that has porphyritic and granitoid phases. Most of the outcrop samples contain disseminated pyrite, chalcopyrite, and bornite. \r\n\r\nA geochemical reconnaissance sampling program in the Western Cordillera, formulated by Andros Jimeno V., Director, Instituto National de Investigaciones Geologico-Mineras (INGEOMINAS), and Earl M. Irving, U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) Chief of Party in Colombia, was carried out from 1969 to 1971 by geologists of the INGEOMINAS office in Medellin. This work was part of a cooperative program of INGEOMINAS and the USGS sponsored by the Government of Colombia and the Agency for International Development, U. S. Department of State. \r\n\r\nSeventeen generally east-trending traverses were completed across the Western Cordillera. The Clavius quadrangle is in the southern lunar highlands about 500 km south of the Mare Nubium and 150 km south of the large young crater Tycho. This part of the Moon is characterized by densely cratered topography and the absence of mare materials. Geologic units in the quadrangle cannot be directly correlated with those in the vicinity of Mare Imbrium, 2500 km to the north, which define most of the lunar time-stratigraphic systems (Shoemaker and Hackman, 1962; Wilhelms, 1970). However, the relative ages of rock units, including crater materials, have been determined by established geologic methods, such as superposition and cross-cutting relations. In addition, crater materials have been positioned within the lunar time stratigraphic framework (Offield, 1971) by estimates. Based on morphology, of their state of erosion (Pohn and Offield, 1970).

A brief examination of the Bartin-were whether earthquake area was made on September 23 and September 24,1968, by the authors to determine whether or not geologic effects had been produced that were significant enough to warrant further detailed study by the Mineral Research and Exploration Institute of Turkey or by the National Center for Earthquake Research of the U.S. Geological Survey. In particular, the questions to be answered were whether this \"natural experiment\" had produced unique or unusual results that would cast light on means of controlling damage by geologic conditions, and whether or not surface faults or other tectonic deformation, h.ad developed which might help define the geologic control of earthquakes in northern Turkey.

The brief field examination was made jointly by personnel of the U.S. Geological Survey and Mineral Research and Exploration Institute of Turkey, because of the interest of both agencies in the earthquake hazard problem. Both agencies had participated in the Conference on Earthquake Hazard Minimization sponsored by the Central Treaty Organization held in Ankara in July 1968. The brief examination was, in part, prompted by the recommendations of the Conference group to take advantage of each significant earthquake to learn \"how to live with earthquakes in greater safety.\"

No additional study of this earthquake by either organization seems warranted at this time, and our observations made during the brief investigation are reported here.
