Population and industrial growth in the Flint area hah placed new demands on the stream and emphasized the need for an analysis of the surface water resources of the basin. This report describes selected streamflow characteristics of the Flint River and its tributaries, and presents draft-storage relations for the river basin. Flow characteristics for 17 sites show that the 7-day 2-year low flow ranges from 0 to 0.17 cfs (cubic feet per second) per square mile. Draft-storage relations for the basin show that existing storage, if fully utilized, could, on an average, provide a minimum discharge at Montrose of 160 cfs in 19 out of 20 years. The discharge, in conjunction with water diverted from Lake Huron to the Flint River through the Detroit and Flint water systems (about 60 cfs in 1971), indicates that low flows would seldom be less than about 200 cfs at Montrose. Diversions from the basin for irrigation may reduce low flows by about 12 cfs. About 7,500 acres of unlined channels and 2,590 acres in 60 off-channel recharge facilities are available for water spreading.</p><p>To estimate potential infiltration rates for the recharge facilities, 63 single-ring infiltrometer tests were conducted at 22 recharge facilities. Tests ranged from 1 to 14 hours and averaged about 14 hours. Measured infiltration rates ranged from about 0.1 foot per day at Patton basin to 106 feet per day at Lynwood basin. Grain-size distribution was determined on 25 soil samples collected at infiltrometer test sites. Regression analysis showed a direct relation between the logarithm of the infiltration rate and the logarithm of the 20th percentile particle diameter, corresponding to 20 percent finer on the grain-size graph. Regression analysis also showed an inverse relation between the logarithm of the infiltration rate and the logarithm of the sorting coefficient. Test sites were grouped into two geologic units--younger alluvium and older alluvium. Logarithmic plots of infiltration rates versus the ratio D20/30 yielded straight-line plots for both geologic units.</p><p>Silt clogging greatly affects infiltration rates. Some clogging was observed in nearly all facilities, and significant reduction of infiltration rates was measured in seven basins.</p><p>Drillers' logs, supplemented with data from 11 test holes augered during the investigation, were used to delineate low permeability horizons that might retard downward movement of recharged water. Low permeability zones were found within the upper 50 feet at five basins.</p><p>Unused storage capacity in underlying ground-water basins ranges from large in Chino basin to minimal in Oak Glen subbasin. Recharge operations in Bunker Hill, Lytle, Etiwanda, and Claremont Heights basins should be carefully monitored to guard against overfilling the aquifers.</p><p>Recharge capacity, which is the volume rate (cubic feet per second) of water that can be recharged for extended periods at a given site, was estimated for all unlined channels and off-channel recharge facilities. Recharge capacity of all off-channel facilities was estimated to be more than 3,200 cfs (cubic feet per second). Total recharge capacity for major stream systems seems to be adequate to handle floods of 5-year recurrence intervals, and most systems have sufficient capacity to handle 10-year floods.</p><p>Potential recharge rate, which is the infiltration rate (feet per day) that can be maintained over extended periods under normal operating conditions, was delineated throughout the study area on the basis of controlling geologic and hydrologic factors. The work-effort information used in these programs is accumulated and entered to the nearest hour on forms completed by each employee. Tabulating cards are punched directly from these forms after visual examinations for errors are made. Reports containing detailed work-effort data itemized by employee within each project and account and by account and project for each employee are prepared for both current-month and year-to-date periods by the CAN 2 computer program. An option allowing preparation of reports for a specified 3-month period is provided. The total number of hours worked on each account and project and a grand total of hours worked in the New Mexico District is computed and presented in a summary report for each period.\r\n\r\nWork effort not chargeable directly to individual projects or accounts is considered as overhead and can be apportioned to the individual accounts and projects on the basis of the ratio of the total hours of work effort for the individual accounts or projects to the total New Mexico District work effort at the option of the user. The hours of work performed by a particular section, such as General Investigations or Surface Water, are prorated and charged to the projects or accounts within the particular section. A number of surveillance or buffer accounts are employed to account for the hours worked on special events or on those parts of large projects or accounts that require a more detailed analysis. Any part of the New Mexico District operation can be separated and analyzed in detail by establishing an appropriate buffer account. \r\n\r\nWith the exception of statements associated with word size, the computer program is written in FORTRAN IV in a relatively low and standard language level to facilitate its use on different digital computers. The program has been run only on a Control Data Corporation 6600 computer system. Ground water from approximately 230 large-capacity wells is used to irrigate most of the 18,165 acres under irrigation. \r\n\r\nThe purpose of this study is to provide more knowledge about the character of the aquifers, quantity of water in storage, rate of withdrawal, and the effect of withdrawals on streamflow. The area studied consists of about 400 square miles in southeastern Laramie County in the extreme southeast corner of Wyoming. \r\n\r\nThe White River Formation of Oligocene age and alluvium of Quaternary age are the principal aquifers. The White River Formation is made up primarily of clay, silt, and fine sand. Secondary permeability in the White River Formation accounts for it being an important aquifer. The alluvium, which Includes terrace and flood-plain deposits, consists of sand and gravel that contain some lenses of silt and clay.\r\n\r\nExistence of secondary permeability in the White River Formation has been accepted for some time although the nature of the secondary permeability has been disputed. Examination of downhole conditions with a television camera during this study revealed openings in the formation that appeared to be similar to tubes or caverns. The openings were of various sizes and shapes but only a few appeared to be associated with fracturing. Solution activity in the formation probably is an important factor in the development of secondary permeability. \r\n\r\nThe study area was divided into the Pine Bluffs-Egbert area and the Carpenter area. Ground-water movement in the Pine Bluffs-Egbert area is generally eastward into Nebraska; in the Carpenter area, movement is generally southward into Colorado. \r\n\r\nPumpage from large-capacity wells in the Pine Bluffs-Egbert area was estimated to be about 21,790 acre-feet in 1971. Water levels exhibited a declining trend annually in some areas during the period of record. Data indicate that pumpage in the Pine Bluffs-Egbert area probably is the cause of decreased base flow in Lodgepole Creek since approximately 1961. Increased pumpage, above that in 1971, will result in further reduction of discharge of Lodgepole Creek into Nebraska. \r\n\r\nIn the Carpenter area, it was estimated that the terrace deposit contained about 1 million acre-feet of saturated sediments in March 1971. The amount of ground water in storage in the White River Formation in this area is unknown.\r\n\r\nPumpage from large-capacity wells in the Carpenter area was estimated to be about 7,090 acre-feet in 1971. As part of a study of the algae problem, a chemical balance for the lake and its drainage basin has been made. The quantities of major dissolved species entering the lake are determined for each of the hydrochemically homogeneous terrains comprising the basin. The largest terrain, the Tug Hill terrain to the north of the lake contributes more than half the total streamflow to the lake, but is underlain by chemically unreactive bedrock and glacial deposits and its mean annual dissolved-solids contribution is only 0.25 t per d per sq mi (tons per day per square mile). Adjacent to Oneida Lake and extensive to the south and west is the Lake Plain terrain, underlain by sediments from ancestral Oneida Lake and contributing dissolved solids to streams at the moderate rate of 0.57 t per d per sq mi. At the foot of the Appalachian Upland escarpment is the Salina Group terrain, underlain by gypsiferous shales and carbonate rocks, and contributing more dissolved solids than any other terrain--32 t per d per sq mi. Within the Appalachian Upland, in the extreme southern part of the basin are two terrains underlain by glacial sand and gravel and by glacial till and bedrock. Their contributions are 0.58 and 0.85 t per d per sq mi, respectively. Throughout the basin, the dissolved-solid contribution of precipitation is 0.06 t per d per sq mi. Lake input is balanced by lake output for all major species except sulfate and possibly calcium and magnesium, which are retained in the lake.</p><p>Stream nitrogen loads are about 0.0016 t per d per sq mi throughout the basin, a value lower than that typical of undeveloped grassland and forest. In the southern part of the basin, this load is increased to 0.0020 t per d per sq mi by sewered wastes. Nitrogen loads leaving balance those entering the lake.</p><p>Phosphate loads are consistent with the geology of the several terrains and range from 0.0006 to 0.0034 t per d per sq mi. Domestic and industrial wastes, lakeshore cottages, and boaters and recreationists probably contribute not more than 30 percent of the phosphate entering the lake. Records of many shallow wells were compiled in 1937 and periodic measurements were made in a few wells until 1966. Owing to the heavy development of irrigation during the 1960's (fig. 1) an expanded network of observation wells established in Texas County in 1966 and in Beaver and Cimarron Counties in 1967; measurement of water levels have been made on an annual basis since those times.\r\nThis report contains water-level records for the period 1966-70 in Texas County, and for the period 1967-70 in Beaver and Cimarron Counties. At the present time (1971) the annual observation-well network includes 528 wells, of which 98 are in Beaver County, 211 are in Cimarron County, and 219 are in Texas County. The information is of value to the State of Washington Department of Ecology in its management decisions in this area where heavy ground-water withdrawals have resulted in increasing annual water-level declines.</p>\n<br>\n<p>The 10-inch well is 750 feet deep and penetrates six aquifer zones (A through F) in basalt. The upper 60 feet of the well is cased while the remainder of the hole is open in the basalt. The well was test pumped during drilling and showed specific capacities of (1) 0.65 gpm (gallon per minute) per foot of drawdown when at the 258-foot depth and open to aquifers A and B. (2) 0.62 gpm per foot of drawdown when at the 540-foot depth and open to aquifers A through D, and (3) 22 gpm foot of drawdown when at full 750-foot depth and open to all six aquifers.</p>\n<br>\n<p>To supplement the driller's log of the well, borehole geophysical logging provided information on natural gamma radiation, water temperature and resistivity, downhole movement (via flowmeter) of the water, and borehole diameter (via caliper log). Upon completion of the well each aquifer zone was isolated from the others by cement seals, and piezometer pipes were installed to each zone to allow definition of the vertical hydraulic gradient and an estimate of the vertical ground-water movement in the area, along with chemical-quality sampling of the various zones and monitoring of any changes in water quality with time. The initial measurements of water levels showed that the levels generally decrease with aquifer depth, with about 200 feet of head difference existing between the uppermost and lowermost aquifer zones. Another pipe, installed for providing thermometer access, permits recording the geothermal gradient with depth in the well, and provides another basis for estimating vertical ground-water movement in the area.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Prior to isolation of the various aquifer zones, the composite water level was recovering from the cessation of pumping at the end of the 1970 irrigation season. On April 6, 1971, this composite water level had begun declining, presumably as a result of p[umping of an irrigation well 1 mile to the northwest, By May 6, after the aquifer zones had been isolated and piezometer pieces installed, water levels in aquifers E and F had declined 11 feet in 15 days, in response to pumping for irrigation in the area.
