These are principally associated with chalcedonic zones that consist of one or more discontinuous stringers and veins of cryptocrystalline silica and fine-grained quartz in silicified quartz monzonite and alaskite. Uranium ore has been produced at the W. Wilson mine from one of these vein zones, and exploration work is being done on another--the G. Washington-A. Lincoln. Some very fine-grained pyrite and minute quantities of other sulfides have been recognized in deposits of this type.
\n
At the Lone Eagle mine small amount of uranium ore has been developed along a siliceous vein that contains sooty pitchblende (?) in small irregular fractures; significant amounts of galena and sphalerite are distributed sporadically along the vein.
\n
In the Clancy Creek area, no anomalous radioactivity has been detected in the pre-batholithic volcanic rocks or in the post-batholithic dacite and andesite.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Supplementary information was also obtained at Arlington, Virginia, in 1940 and at the Patuxent Research Refuge, Maryland, in 1947.....Resident males established territories almost immediately upon arrival in spring. In southern Michigan some resident males arrived at least as soon as, if not before, transient males. Most females appeared on their nesting ground about a week later. Adults were engaged in nesting activities from the time of their arrival in spring until the advent of the post-nuptial molt in late summer.....Typical Yellow-throat habitat consists of a mixture of a dense herbaceous vegetation and small woody plants in damp or wet situations. At Ann Arbor, the Yellow-throat was a common breeding species in its restricted suitable habitat. The population density in one area of suitable habitat was about 69 territorial males per 100 acres. Of 11 territorial males that were intensively studied, one was polygamous (with two mates), nine were monogamous, and one was probably monogamous (with at least one mate).....The song of the individual Yellow-throat was heard throughout the breeding season except for the courtship period. Two major types of song were the common song given while perched, and an occasional, more elaborate, flight song. Most males sing in spurts, singing at fairly regular intervals for a considerable period and then abruptly ceasing for another period. The vocabulary of both sexes included several types of call notes that appeared either to have special functions or to represent outward expressions of distinct emotional states of the bird.....Resident males were antagonistic toward each other throughout the breeding season. Most remained on well-established territories during this period. Territories of 10 monogamous males ranged in size from .8 to 1.8 acres but the territory of one polygamous male occupied. 3.4 acres. The behavior of males during inter-territorial encounters was similar in some respects to their behavior when courting females.....While courting females, the males are very attentive and seldom sing for about one week. During the courtship period the female locates the nesting site and builds the nest without assistance from the male.....Nests, constructed of dried plant materials, were situated on or near the ground and were supported on all sides by stems of herbaceous plants or limbs of shrubs. Many nests were composed of three layers with the coarser materials being used in the outer layer.....The full clutch of eggs in 12 nests ranged from 4 to 6 (average, 4.6). Early clutches seem to be larger than later ones. After the first egg is laid, one is laid on each succeeding day until the clutch is complete. Incubation period is about 12 days. Incubation is only by the female. Records of daytime incubation schedules of three females about half way through incubation indicate that the periods spent on and off the nests average about 61 and 16 minutes, respectively.....Young Yellow-throats usually remain in the nest for eight or nine days. During this period they grow and develop rapidly. Their weight quintuples in six days. Both sexes are active in feeding the young and in removing excreta from the nest. Records of feeding at three nests showed a range of one feeding per 5 1/2 minutes to one feeding per 22 minutes, the rate increasing with age of young. Adults care for the young for at least two weeks after the young leave the nest.....Ten of 12 females that were intensively studied were successful in raising young beyond the nestling stage. Only one of these raised two broods, although three females built at least three nests each. In 19 nests, 11 (58 per cent) produced nestlings and 7 (37 per cent) produced fledglings. In total, the 19 nests produced an average of one fledgling Yellow-throat per nest. Most of the deposits, however, are in the southeastern half of this area The thorium minerals occur in barite-sulfide veins along northwest-trending shear zones that cut a pre-Cambrian complex or amphibolite, biotite-granite gneiss, metagabbro, migmatite, microcline granites, pegmatite and white granite, and syenite (?) o Along the shear zones are premineralization basic (lamprophyre (?)) dikes. Thorite has been tentatively identified as the principal radio-\nactive mineral It is associated with barite: quartz, galena, fluorite, limonite, and pyrite Some of the shear zones perhaps can be traced for as much as 2 miles, but the largest known thorium-bearing ore body is as much as 300 feet long, 26 feet wide, and 400 feet deep. All known uranium mineralization is restricted to sandstones of the Wasatch formation exclusive of sparsely disseminated uranium in the White River sandstone which caps the Pumpkin Buttes and several localities on the Great Pine Ridge southwest of the Pumpkin Buttes where ironstone and clinker in the Fort Union formation have above normal radioactivity. The uranium occurrences in the Wasatch formation are in a red sandstone zone 450 to 900 feet above the base of formation and are of two types. (1) small concretionary masses of uranium, iron, and manganese minerals in sandstone and (2) irregular zones in which uranium minerals are disseminated in sandstone The second type is usually larger but lower grade than the first type. Additional measurements were made around the exposure of igneous rock to obtain the shape of the plug at depth. No indication of a buried lateral igneous feeder was detected on the magnetic profileso The magnetic contour map showed that the plug was much larger than indicated by the diorite porphyry outcrop, and that the buried part of the plug southeast of Round Mountain has a higher magnetic susceptibility than the diorite outcrop. Theoretical anomalies, calculated using the susceptibility of the diorite outcrop, indicate that a lateral feeder at a depth of greater than 200 feet could not be detected. The size and shape of the magnetic anomaly as shown on the contour map suggest that the plug was fed from a source at depth.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei342","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Black, R., 1953, A magnetic investigation of the Round Mountain plug, Castle Valley, Grand County, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 342, 25 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/tei342.","productDescription":"25 p.","numberOfPages":"26","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":277457,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/342/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":285792,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0342/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","county":"Grand County","otherGeospatial":"Round Mountain","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -109.573062,38.581999 ], [ -109.573062,38.688567 ], [ -109.289463,38.688567 ], [ -109.289463,38.581999 ], [ -109.573062,38.581999 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"52303f5fe4b04b8e63a20614","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Black, R.A.","contributorId":44230,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Black","given":"R.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":483752,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Ground most favorable for carnotite deposits is in areas of lenticular sandstone where the stratum is underlain by green-gray altered mudstone.\nOre is localized in scour-and-fill bedded sandstones within favorable areas of lenticular sandstone. Regional control of the movement of ore-bearing solutions in the persistent ore-bearing sandstone stratum is indicated by; 1. A concave arcuate belt of partly altered mudstone transitional between areas of unaltered\nmudstone to the west and areas of altered mudstone to the east; 2. Abnormal radioactivity was recorded in eight of the ten areas surveyed. The anomalies are located in Bradford, Clay, Columbia, DeSoto, Dixie, Lake, Marion, Orange, Sumter, Taylor, and Union Counties.
\n
\n
Two of the anomalies were investigated briefly on the ground. One resulted from a deposit of river-pebble phosphate in the Peace River valley; samples of the river pebble contain an average of 0.013 percent equivalent uranium. The other anomaly resulted from outcrops of leached phosphate rock containing as much as 0.016 percent equivalent uranium. Several anomalies in other areas were recorded at or near localities where phosphate deposits have been reported to occur.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei387","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Moxham, R.M., 1953, Airborne radioactivity surveys for phosphate in Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 387, Report: 16 p.; 7 Plates: 16.74 x 20.28 inches and smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/tei387.","productDescription":"Report: 16 p.; 7 Plates: 16.74 x 20.28 inches and smaller","numberOfPages":"16","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":185672,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/387/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":285814,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0387/report.pdf"},{"id":285806,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0387/figure-2.pdf"},{"id":285807,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0387/figure-3.pdf"},{"id":285809,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0387/figure-4.pdf"},{"id":285810,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0387/figure-5.pdf"},{"id":285811,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0387/figure-6.pdf"},{"id":285812,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0387/figure-7.pdf"},{"id":285813,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0387/figure-8.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","county":"Bradford County;Clay County;Columbia County;Desoto County;Dixie County;Lake County;Marion;Orange County;Sumter County;Taylor;Union County","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -87.6349,24.5211 ], [ -87.6349,31.001 ], [ -80.0311,31.001 ], [ -80.0311,24.5211 ], [ -87.6349,24.5211 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae3e4b07f02db688f60","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moxham, Robert M.","contributorId":56210,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moxham","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":284155,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It is black, opaque, submetallic, and occurs in microscopic bladed crystals of the orthorhombic dipyramidal class. The axial ratio is a:b:c = 0.509:1:0.310, the common forms are b {010}, m {110}, p {121}, and a large vicinal form is approximately {0, 10, 1}. The observed specific gravity is 4.0 and the calculated specific gravity is 4.15. The composition is essentially VO(OH), with some iron commonly substituted for vanadium.
