Data on the quality of surface water (chemical, microbiological, temperature, and sediment) were collected from designated sampling sites at predetermined intervals such as once daily, weekly, monthly, or less frequently. Records are given for 66 sampling stations of which 9 are partial-record stations, and 52 are miscellaneous sites. Records of chemical analyses are given for 46 ground-water sites. Locations of surface water-quality stations are shown in Figure 1, page 2. Records for pertinent water-quality stations in bordering States are also included. The records were collected by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey under the direction of C. W. Lane, district chief. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Kansas.</p><p>The Geological Survey has published records of chemical quality, suspended sediment, and water temperatures since 1941 in annual series of water-supply papers entitled, \"Quality of Surface Waters of the United States.\" Beginning with the 1964 water year, water-quality records also have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. Distribution of these reports is limited; they are designed primarily for rapid release of data shortly after the end of the water year to meet local needs. The aquifer characteristics have a wide range, as follows: Transmissivity values range from nearly 0 along the perimeter of the area to more than 100,000 gallons per day per foot in the central parts of the area; storage coefficient values range from 0.1 to 0.2; and the saturated thickness of the upper outwash material ranges from nearly 0 to more than 100 feet. Most of the aquifer material is fairly well sorted and is in the particle-size range of fine to coarse sand.</p>\n<p>Wells penetrating the full thickness of the aquifer and developed to 100 percent efficiency can be expected to yield 1,200 gallons per minute for 30 days and to have drawdowns of less than two-thirds the aquifer thickness in much of the area; however, well yields vary widely within short distances. Yields of 300 gallons per minute or less can be expected from wells drilled near the edges of the area and in the general area east and southeast of Otter Tail Lake.</p>\n<p>Results from the mathematical analyses show that the amount of streamflow leaving the area will not be depleted within the 10-year analysis period, if not more than 6 inches of water per year is used on all the irrigable land in the outwash area. If pumpage and its effects on the streams is assumed to be prorated proportionately along the full length of the streams within the area, then the levels of lakes along these streams generally will not be lowered appreciably. However, owing to the heterogeneity of the aquifer and the other variable factors involved, some reaches of the streams may cease to flow when full ground-water development is approached, which, in turn, would result in a decline in some lake levels. Lakes and ponds not connected to streams in the area are expected to be lowered considerably or to be dried up completely as pumping becomes more extensive in years to come.</p>\n<p>If irrigation wells and other large-yield wells in the study area are spaced 1 mile or more away from streams and lakes, the effect of ground-water pumping on the streams will be small, and the lake levels will be affected very little. The floods on many major streams were the highest known since the river valleys were settled. Maximum discharges were as much as twice the discharge of a 50-year flood. The test wells provide information on ground-water conditions where large-scale pumping from wells is rapidly increasing or ids expected to increase, but where data available from existing wells are incomplete and fail to provide adequate guidance for management of the area;s ground-water resources.</p>\n<br>\n<p>The upper 60 feet of the Almira well has a 10-inch casing below this depth the well is uncased in basalt. Four major aquifer zones are penetrated by the well. Geophysical logging during drilling provided data on hole diameter, water resistivity (mineralization) and temperature, and natural radiation of the rock units. These data supplemented the driller's log as a basis for final selection of the aquifers to be monitored. Two pumping tests showed that (1) when the well was 546 feet deep and was pumped at a rate of about 510 gpm (gallons per minute) for 9 1/2 hours, the specific capacity was 92 gpm per foot of drawndown; and (2) at the final 750-foot depth, with all four aquifers contributing water and the well being pumped at a rate of 525 gpm for 24 hours, the specific capacity was 96 gpm per foot of drawdown. Water from the well when drilled to its final depth of 750 feet is slightly warmer and somewhat more mineralized than when the well was only 546 feet deep.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Four piezometer pipes were installed in the well so that\neach reflected the head in a specific aquifer zone that is\nhydraulically isolated from the other aquifer zones by cement\nseals.
