The low potential for oil or gas notwithstanding, the possibilities for discovery cannot be ruled out because the area and nearby lands have not been thoroughly explored. No minerals have been mined within the Savannah Roadless Area, and the only production nearby has been the digging of clayey sand used in stabilizing U.S. Forest Service roads. Fuller's earth, quartz sand and gravel, clayey sand, and common clay presently are produced elsewhere in the region, and limestone and peat have been produced in the past. No clay suitable for structural clay products or fuller's earth is present in the roadless area; however, a bed of quartz sand and gravel of excellent quality was penetrated at a depth interval of 37-50 ft by one drill hole. Although this bed is coarser grained-and therefore is more suitable for many uses-than the sand deposits worked elsewhere in the Big Bend region, its mineral&nbsp;resource potential is reduced by the thickness of overburden above it and by its distance from markets in population centers. The Apalachicola National Forest has been explored for phosphate and reconnoitered for heavy minerals, but no valuable deposits of either have been found.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mf1470","usgsCitation":"Patterson, S.H., Schmidt, W., and Crandall, T.M., 1982, Mineral resource potential map of the Savannah Roadless Area, Liberty County, Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1470, Report: 8 p.; Plate: 39.52 x 34.27 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1470.","productDescription":"Report: 8 p.; Plate: 39.52 x 34.27 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":180503,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1470.jpg"},{"id":310084,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1470/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"4.35 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":310085,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1470/plate-1.pdf","text":"Plate","size":"15.40 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Plate"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","county":"Liberty County","otherGeospatial":"Savannah Roadless Area","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -85.5,29.5 ], [ -85.5,31 ], [ -84,31 ], [ -84,29.5 ], [ -85.5,29.5 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b08e4b07f02db69bb5e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Patterson, Sam H.","contributorId":62996,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Patterson","given":"Sam","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":263908,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Schmidt, Walter","contributorId":21612,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schmidt","given":"Walter","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":263907,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Crandall, Thomas M.","contributorId":56794,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Crandall","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":263906,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Areas officially designated as \"wilderness,\" \"wild,\" or \"canoe\" when the act was passed were incorporated into the National Wilderness Preservation System, and some of them are presently being studied. The act provided that areas under consideration for wilderness designation should be studied for suitability for incorporation into the Wilderness System. The mineral surveys constitute one aspect of the suitability studies. The act directs that the results of such surveys are to be made available to the public and be submitted to the President and the Congress. A possibility exists for the presence of natural gas at depths greater than 5,000 ft (1,500 m). </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mf1290C","usgsCitation":"Lesure, F., and Dunn, M., 1982, Mineral resource potential map of the Shining Rock Wilderness, Haywood County, North Carolina: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1290, Report: 8 p.; 1 Plate: 31.97 x 29.27 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1290C.","productDescription":"Report: 8 p.; 1 Plate: 31.97 x 29.27 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":105721,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_6918.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":180478,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1290-C/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":485220,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1290-C/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":485221,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1290-C/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"48000","country":"United States","state":"North Carolina","county":"Haywood County","otherGeospatial":"Shining Rock Wilderness","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -82.91666666666667,35.31666666666667 ], [ -82.91666666666667,35.43333333333333 ], [ -82.78416666666666,35.43333333333333 ], [ -82.78416666666666,35.31666666666667 ], [ -82.91666666666667,35.31666666666667 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f2e4b07f02db5eebfe","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lesure, F. The ruptures were mapped&nbsp;during USGS&nbsp;field investigations May 28 to June 4 and July 14-19, 1980. The map also includes some of the ruptures recorded by California Division of Mines and Geology investigators May 26-31, June 26-27, and July 7-11, 1980 (Taylor and Bryant, 1980). Because most of the surface ruptures developed in either unconsolidated pumice, alluvium, or till (and many were on slopes of scarps created by earlier faulting), wind, rain and animals quickly erased many of the ruptures. In places, the minimum detectable slip was 3-10 mm. Thus the lines on the map do not record all of the ruptures that formed at the time of the earthquake. The study area lies within the Blue Ridge physiographic province and is predominatly underlain by Precambrian age plutonic and metasedimentary rocks of low metamorphic grade. All surface and mineral rights are Federally owned. Vein-type deposits and other occurrences of uranium in foliated rocks in the Wilson Creek Gneiss have uranium resource potential. Speculative resources of uranium in vein-type deposits and in supergene-enriched foliated rocks are estimated to total 4 to 8 million pounds of U3O8.</p>\n<p>Mineral resources having low to moderate potential are gold and minerals of thorium, beryllium, niobium, and copper. The mineral resource potential of the area was evaluated from geologic and geochemical studies by the U.S. Geological Survey, and from the examination of existing published and unpublished records of mining prospects and field examination of prospects, mineralized rocks, and placer deposits by the U.S. Bureau of Mines.</p>\n<p>These investigations indicate that the study area has a low potential for mineral resources. Analyses of samples taken from prospect pits, altered outcrops, and stream-sediment samples indicate no minable quantities of precious or base metals. Placer deposits are too small and too low in grade to be considered a resource.</p>\n<p>Substantial deposits of sand, gravel, and glacial till suitable for construction materials occur within the area, but their inaccessibility and remoteness from major markets preclude their being classified as a resource. Areas officially designated as \"wilderness,\" wild,\" or \"canoe\" when the act was passed were incorporated into the National Wilderness Preservation System, and some of them are presently being studied. The act provided that areas under consideration for wilderness designation should be studied for suitability for incorporation into the Wilderness System. The mineral surveys constitute one aspect of the suitability studies. The act directs that the results of such surveys are to be made available to the public and be submitted to the President and the Congress.
