Most spawning activity occurs on reaches of streams where specific hydraulic conditions exist and where stream-channel characteristics and water-quality criteria are met. The present report is the first of a series and is used to present the method of determining preferred spawning conditions and results of the investigation of 129 measurements on 14 study reaches of the Dewatto, Cedar, Kalama, and North 'Fork Nooksack Rivers. Subsequent reports, using the same method will present analyses and preferred spawning and rearing discharges for other streams used by salmon. The method consists of measuring water depth and velocities to designate, from area-(spawnable) discharge curves, peak, preferred spawning discharges for fall chinook, spring chinook, sockeye, and coho salmon at each reach on each river. Also, streambed gravels, water temperature, suspended sediment, dissolved oxygen, and specific conductance are used to help evaluate river conditions during spawning. \r\n\r\nIn examining the repeatability of the method, tested by analyzing independently each of selected pairs of adjacent reaches on the Cedar River, it was found that the preferred peak discharges from the comparisons varied 4.6 percent for the average of four species and two pairs of reaches. Peak spawning discharges ranged, for the four salmon species on each of the three study reaches of each river, from 50 to 140 cfs (cubic feet per second) on Dewatto River, from 230 to 510 cfs on Cedar River, from 245 to 800 cfs on Kalama River, and from 195 to 710 cfs on North Fork Nooksack River. The results indicate that the methods used and the probable discharge values determined are reasonable and, if economically justified, may be used to select discharges, for salmon spawning and rearing.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Mathematical (digital) models that simulate flood hydrographs from rainfall records have been developed for the following gaging stations in the Hillsborough and Alafia River basins of west-central Florida: Hillsborough River near Tampa, Alafia River at Lithia, and north Prong Alafia River near Keysville. These models, which were developed from historical streamflow and and rainfall records, are based on rainfall-runoff and unit-hydrograph procedures involving an arbitrary separation of the flood hydrograph. These models assume the flood hydrograph to be composed of only two flow components, direct (storm) runoff, and base flow. Expressions describing these two flow components are derived from streamflow and rainfall records and are combined analytically to form algorithms (models), which are programmed for processing on a digital computing system.

Most Hillsborough and Alafia River flood discharges can be simulated with expected relative errors less than or equal to 30 percent and flood peaks can be simulated with average relative errors less than 15 percent.

\n
\n

Because of the inadequate rainfall network that is used in obtaining input data for the North Prong Alafia River model, simulated peaks are frequently in error by more than 40 percent, particularly for storms having highly variable areal rainfall distribution.

\n
\n

Simulation errors are the result of rainfall sample errors and, to a lesser extent, model inadequacy. Data errors associated with the determination of mean basin precipitation are the result of the small number and poor areal distribution of rainfall stations available for use in the study. Model inadequacy, however, is attributed to the basic underlying theory, particularly the rainfall-runoff relation.

These models broaden and enhance existing water-management capabilities within these basins by allowing the establishment and implementation of programs providing for continued development in these areas. Specifically, the models serve not only as a basis for forecasting floods, but also for simulating hydrologic information needed in flood-plain mapping and delineating and evaluating alternative flood control and abatement plans.

BEDROCK GEOLOGY

The sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Smyrna Mills quadrangle have undergone weak regional metamorphism and, locally, a higher grade of thermal metamorphism. Because the original character of the regionally metamorphosed rocks is well preserved, the descriptive nomenclature of. sedimentary and volcanic rocks rather than metamorphic rocks is used.

In most of the experiments recharge was assumed to be from the surface, within a specified radius of influence, and distributed uniformly over the area within this radius. Experiments were made with different anisotropies (ratios of lateral to vertical resistance) so that various possible combinations of aquifer thickness and effective radius or radius of influence and combinations .of lateral and vertical permeability could be included in the models. Flow nets were constructed to show distribution of potential in the vertical section and intersections of stream surfaces with the vertical plane. \r\n\r\nThe series of experiments in which the screened interval is in the upper part of the aquifer shows that flow decreases and stream tubes shift progressively toward the upper part of the aquifer as anisotropy increases. \r\n\r\nAnother series illustrates that total yield increases and yield per foot of screen decreases as screen length increases. \r\n\r\nThe experiments indicate that, under conditions prevalent in the Punjab, the Distance-drawdown method for determining permeability gives results with an error of 10 percent or less provided that at least one piezometer or observation well is within a few feet of the pumped well and that no observation well or piezometer used is more than 100 feet from the pumped well. \r\n\r\nRelative traveltime for each of 10 stream tubes is given for three models. Relative traveltimes for one-fourth and one-half the effective radius are given for selected stream tubes. This study was undertaken to determine the probable effects on the Similkameen and Okanogan Rivers of the removal, transport, and deposition of sediment now deposited behind Enloe Dam on the Similkameen River, if the dam were removed.

\n

Under existing conditions of sediment transport, the average annual suspended-sediment discharges at three streamflow-measuring sites are calculated to be 134,000 tons for the Similkameen River near Nighthawk, 175,000 tons for the Okanogan River near Tonasket, and 175,000 tons for the Okanogan River at Malott.

\n

The volume of sediment in Enloe Reservoir was computed to be 1.79 million cubic yards (about 2.4 million tons). The sediment is largely sand. If the dam were removed the maximum amount of reservoir sand transportable (in addition to normal sediment discharge), under stated conditions of velocity and depth during any average 10-year period, would range from about 17,000 to 580,000 cubic yards per year, with about 320,000 cubic yards being transported during a year of average water discharge. These volumes represent a range of 32 to less than 1 percent of the volume of sediment now deposited in the reservoir. 

\n

The reservoir deposits not carried to the mouth of the Okanogan River (at Columbia River) would be deposited largely in a 17-mile reach of the Okanogon River immediately downstream from its confluence with the Similkameen River. Deposition of the reservoir sediment would tend to reduce the capacity of the channel of the Okanogan River in this reach; also there possibly would be some long-tern adjustments of the stream course to the temporary increase in the sediment load. Locally, the reduction in the channel cross section probably would increase the depth of the water and area of inundation during floods. Deposition of sediment in the Okanogan River channel and accompanying undesirable effects would be less severe if the dam were removed in segments over a period of several years.

If the dam is removed in segments the amount of sediment transported by the river could be monitored to evaluate (1) the timing of the removal of the remaining segments of the dam, based on actual sediment-transport data, (2) the amount of sediment rremaining in the reservoit, and (3) the impact of sediment deposition on channel configuration and flooding.
