Niobium is in demand for use in high-temperature and non-creep steels.</p><p>The Magnet Cove and Potash Sulphur Springs areas are in central Arkansas between Malvern and Hot Springs. They are underlain by similar alkaline igneous complexes consisting of nepheline syenite, more basic alkaline rocks, and calcite rock or carbonatite. The igneous rocks intrude Paleozoic sedimentary rocks and are truncated by a Late Cretaceous erosion surface.</p><p>At Magnet Cove deposits of rutile (TiO<sub>2)</sub> occur within the igneous complex; two deposits of brookite (TiO<sub>2</sub>) occur in quartzite of the Arkansas novaculite formation of probable Devonian and Mississippian age, near the margin of the complex. Perovskite (calcium titanate) occurs in several places in the igneous complex.</p><p>Niobium is present in rutile, brookite, and perovskite, and also probably in other minerals not yet analyzed.</p><p>In order to determine the distribution and average content of niobium in the larger titanium deposits, drill core and channel samples were analyzed for niobium, titanium, and other elements; and average figures were calculated. Concentrates and single crystals were also analyzed. Material from drill cores of perovskite-bearing magnetite-pyroxene rock on the Mo-Ti Corporation property was studied and analyzed. The Kimsey calcite quarry area was mapped, and channel samples and single crystals were analyzed. Channel samples from trenches on the Wilson prospect at Potash Sulphur Springs were analyzed.</p><p>The areas studied contain large resources of titanium and niobium, of low grade. That international surface is highly undulatory, and most contemporary geologists who have examined it believe that the contact irregularities result from pre-St. Peter subaerial erosion of the upper Shakopee surface. Some earlier investigators do not entirely concur.</p><p>This report is a by-product of work done for the U. S. Geological Survey during an investigation of the lead-zinc resources of Wisconsin by the U. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey. Attention was focused on the problem by stratigraphic studies of the Prairie du Chien formations, particularly of the Shakopee dolomite, in which structural and lithologic characters observed in the carbonate sediments seemed to be incompatible with the widely accepted erosional origin of the upper Shakopee surface. It was decided, in 1950, to explore the whole problem of the Shakopee-St. Peter relations by detailed outcrop examinations, supplemented by subsurface and other studies that might contribute to a better understanding of the genetic relationships involved. The area of the investigation was restricted to three counties in southwestern Wisconsin and closely adjacent areas in Iowa(fig. 1), differing in this respect from the broader and more general studies The igneous apatites and marine phosphorites form deposits measurable in millions or billions of tons; the residual deposits are measurable in thousands or millions; and the other types generally only in thousands of tons.\r\n\r\nIgneous apatite deposits have been mined on a small scale in New York, New Jersey, and Virginia. Marine phosphorites have been mined in Montana, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Residual phosphorites have been mined in Tennessee, Pennsylvania, and Florida. River pebble has been produced in South Carolina and Florida; phosphatized rock in Tennessee and Florida; and guano in New Mexico and Texas. Present production is limited almost entirely to Florida, Tennessee, Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming.\r\n\r\nIncomplete but recently partly revised estimates indicate the presence of about 5 billion tons of phosphate deposits in the United States that is minable under present economic conditions. As the two regions dealt with in the chart are widely separated, the lists of references are also given separately. The annotations dealing with Greenland are based entirely on published information. The annotations dealing with Alaska are based on a re-examination of nearly all the Cretaceous fossils from Alaska are based on a re-examination of nearly all the Cretaceous fossils from Alaska in the collections of the Geological Survey. This has resulted in many concepts not hitherto published and in some concepts that are completely at variance with those that have been published. Naturally for large areas undergoing active exploration, such as Alaska, a correlation chart is out of date in many particulars as soon as published. Nevertheless it is valuable to the field man whose activities are confined to small areas but who must interpret much of his data in terms of surrounding areas that he has not seen. It is valuable to the student and to the general geologist because it organizes scattered information in a manner that can be applied in their field problems, makes quite unnecessary the memorization of stratigraphic correlations are based on observation and reasoning and not on a vast memory. It is probably of greatest value to the specialist who makes the chart because he discovers what areas and problems are most in need of research and can thereby direct his efforts and those of his Much of the clay contains 35 percent or more of alumina and between 1 and 2 percent of iron oxide. Production is largely from an underground mine as the best clay deposit known in the district occurs on the side of a steep hill with more than 100 feet of sandstone overlying most of it.\r\n\r\nThe good clay deposits occur at the base of an Eocene sandstone formation, and overlie mottled clays with a high iron content that are residual deposits formed on an old weathered surface. Mapping indicates that the clay deposits are very lenticular, though all occur at the same stratigraphic position, and they grade laterally into sandy clay and quartz sand. The area is semiarid and characterized by cliffs and deep canyons.\r\n\r\nFormations range in age from Permian to Upper Jurassic and have an aggregate thickness of about 3,500 feet. Permian formations are the buff Coconino sandstone and the overlying white, limy, shert-containing Kaibab limestone. Unconformably overlying the Kaihab is the lower Triassic Moenkopi formation of reddish-brown and yellow mudstone, siltstone, and sandstone; it contains the Sinbad limestone member (?) in the lower part. Thin, lenticular Shinarump conglomerate unconformably overlies the Moenkopi, but grades upward into the Upper Triassic Chinle formation of variegated mudstone with some interbedded sandstone and limestone lenses. Uncomformably overlying the Chinle are the Wingate sandstone, Kayenta formation, and Navajo sandstone of the Jurassic (?) Glen Canyon group, which consist of red to white sandstone. Only the lower part of the Carmel formation of the Upper Jurassic San Rafael group is exposed in the area; it consists of variegated siltstone, sandstone, limestone, and gypsum.\r\n\r\nThe conspicuous structural feature in the area is the Teasdale anticline which trends northwest, is about 14 miles long, and is asymmetric with a steeper west flank. Bounding the anticline on the northeast and east is the Capitol Reef monocline, the northern part of the Waterpocket Fold. Strata in the area are broken by steeply-dipping normal faults with small displacements, except for the Teasdale fault which has a maximum displacement of over 1,000 feet. Jointing is prominent in some formations.\r\n\r\nThe major orogenic movement in the area is believed to be late Upper Cretaceous to early Tertiary. U, S. Bureau of Mines under contract to the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission at the Old Leyden coal mine, Jefferson County, Colo. The holes were spotted on the basis of geologic mapping by the U. S. Geological survey and were drilled to explore the lateral and downward extent of a uranium-bearing coal and the associated carnotite deposits in the adjacent sandstone° The data obtained from the diamond-core holes helped to explain the geology and structural control of the deposit. The uranium is most abundant in a coal bed that in places has been brecciated by shearing. and then altered to a hard, dense, and silicified rock. The uraniferous coal is in the nearly vertical beds of the Laramie formation of Upper Cretaceous age. </p><p>Small lenticular bodies of uraniferous material, 50 feet long, 25 to 30 feet wide, and 2 to 4 feet thick, occur at intervals in the coal and silicified coal over a strike length of about 800 feet. These bodies contain 0.10 to 0.50 percent uranium. Data obtained from the drilling indicate a discontinuous radioactive zone between these higher-grade bodies; assays of samples from the cores range from 0.001 to 0.10 percent uranium. All drill holes were probed by Survey and A. E. C. logging equipment and showed anomalies where the core assayed more than 0.005 percent uranium. </p><p>Material of ore grade--0.10 percent uranium--was found in one core; the rock in the other five holes was of lower grade. The relief is about 3,500 feet, and the highest mountain reaches an altitude of 4,453 feet. Remnants of larger glaciers and perennial snow fields cover many of the higher summits, and glacial erratics at elevations above 3,100 feet attest to a former thick ice cover.\r\n\r\nThe bedded rocks are crystalline schists that locally reach katozonal metamorphic rank as indicated by biotite-garnet-kyanite-sillimanite mineral assemblages. The schists are believed to be dominantly a product of regional metamorphism predating the intrusion of rocks related to the Coast Range batholith. It appears, however, that stresses continued to be active during igneous and granitizing activity accompanying the Coast Range orogeny.\r\n\r\nThe major intrusive bodies are a composite quartz-dioritic batholith and quartz-diorite sills that locally reach a thickness of more than two thousand feet. The sills usually are notably gneissic, and appear to have formed by intrusion rather than replacement. The batholith is a composite body formed by migmatization, replacement, and local fusion. A stressed environment during formation is suggested by a primary gneissic structure. A high quartz content and a paucity of potash feldspars is diagnostic of the intrusive bodies. In addition to the bodies of quartz-diorite, small sills and dikes of gabbro, quartz-pegmatite, and unmetamorphosed diabase intrude the schists.\r\n\r\nOverturned folds in the schists are nearly isoclinal, and some of the folds are large enough to cause repetition of beds in the Clark Peak schists.\r\n\r\nTwo persistent northwest-trending strike faults of small displacement cut the schists. Two east-trending faults of larger displacement are marked by thick gouge zones locally containing graphite. The rocks near the faults are hydrothermally altered and pyritized, and at least two of the diabase dikes are crushed and hydrothermally altered near one of the northwest-trending faults. A Study was made to map the Phosphoria formation, study its stratigraphy, and to ascertain the reserves and mining problems. In the Centennial Range the Phosphoria formation is divisible into five members, designated A to E, from the bottom to the top of the formation. The B and D members contain phosphate rock. The B member contains six feet or more of high grade phosphate rock, mostly in one layer, and is the chief potential ore bed. The phosphate rock is of detrital origin and contains some quartz. Lithologic variations in the B member as well as areas where the B member is missing due to pre-member erosion, need more study.\r\n\r\nThe formation dips gently southward and is overlain by varying amounts of overburden, Underground mining would seem to be the best method of potential exploitation of the deposit, but core drilling and further trenching are needed. \r\n\r\nHigh grade phosphate rock reserves in. The placer minerals are monazite and a group of uranium bearing rare earth columbates and tantalates here referred to loosely as radioactive blacks. The monazite is an accessory mineral in the granitic country rock; the radioactive blacks occur in pegmatite dikes. The supply of these minerals to the placers was controlled (1) by the geography of their occurrence in the parent rock, and (2) by the distribution of alpine glaciers during two late Pleistocene glacial stages. By reason of a favorable combination of these factors, the richest placer deposits of the district are in Big Meadow, a valley fill formed as a result of the blocking of Bear Creek by a glacier from a tributary valley during the Illinoian (?) stage. The Big Meadow fill consists of intertonguing depositional units formed by Bear Creek and its tributaries, including both normal alluvium and glacial outwash, and ranging from rich to barren. The richest phase that has been blocked out by drilling was derived from the drainage basin of Casner Creek, an east tributary of Bear Creek. The geologic relations suggest that a neighboring stream, Howard Creek, should have supplied equally rich material, but the part of the valley fill formed by Howard Creek has not been tested. The Alberhill Coal and Clay Company is the largest operator and has produced a little over 2,000,000 tons of clay, of which nearly half was the refractory type.\r\n\r\nThe clay occurs at the contact of the lower Tertiary and the Mesozoic basement complex. The weathered surface of basement rocks includes much clay of high iron and low alumina content, and the better clay occurs in the basal Tertiary sediments. The clay deposits vary rather abruptly in thickness and quality, and only local lenses contain workable deposits. Structural deformation makes dips of 10 to 20 degrees common and the clay strata therefore pitch under excessive overburden in short distances.
