This report reviews results obtained from August 1967 to January 1, 1968, through aeromagnetic interpretation and field investigations in four of the areas (Areas 2, 3,4, and 5).\r\n\r\nAeromagnetic interpretation identified 27 prominent anomalies, 17 of which were checked in the field. The majority of these anomalies were found to be caused by minor amounts of magnetite in igneous rocks, including granite stocks, mafic flows, and mafic dikes. Other anomalies are caused by magnetite in metamorphic rocks or by topographic effects. However, massive magnetite boulders were observed in three adjoining localities (Anomalies E2, E3, and E4, fig. 2) in area 2, and magnetite partly replacing a limestone boulder was found in area 3 (Anomaly CK3, fig. 3). Further study of these magnetite exposures is planned.\r\n\r\nIn addition, two iron prospects and one lead prospect were briefly examined. Data on the quality of surface water (chemical, temperature, and sediment) were collected from designated sampling sites at predetermined intervals such as once-daily, weekly, monthly or less frequently, and at some sites data were recorded on punched paper tape at 60-minute intervals. Records are given for 371 sampling stations, of which 41 are continuous-record stations, 24 are partial-record stations, and 306 are miscellaneous sites. Records of chemical analyses also are given for 260 ground-water sites. Locations of surface-water quality stations are shown in Figures 3 and 4. The records were collected by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey under the direction of T. R. Cummings, district chief, and John J. Molloy, district chief, Water Resources Division, Columbus, Ohio. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Michigan.
The Geological Survey has published records of chemical quality, water temperatures, and sediment since 1941 in an annual series of water-supply papers entitled, \"Quality of Surface Waters of the United States.\" Beginning with the 1964 water year, water-quality records have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. These reports are for limited distribution and are designed primarily for rapid release of data shortly after the end of the water year. These records will be published later in Geological Survey water-supply papers.

More exact determination of the chemical quality of ground water in any given part of the map area can be made only on the basis of special investigations. More detailed information on the chemical quality of ground water in specific areas is obtainable from the district office of the Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, Salt Lake City, Utah.

It borders the Pacific Ocean on the west and the Santa Cruz Mountains on the east. The city of Watsonville is the largest center of population.\r\n\r\nDeposits that range in age from Pliocene to Holocene make up the ground-water reservoir. These include, from oldest to youngest, the Purisima Formation, Aromas Red Sands of Allen (1946), terrace deposits, alluvium, and dune sand. These deposits underlie an area of about 80 square miles and have a maximum thickness of about 4,000 feet. The alluvium yields most of the water pumped from wells in the area.\r\n\r\nPre-Pliocene rocks underlie and form the boundaries of the ground-water reservoir. These rocks contain ground water in fractures and in sandstone beds. However, they are not an important source of ground water. There is close continuity between the geology of the Pajaro Valley area and that of the Soquel-Aptos area, which is contiguous on the north.\r\n\r\nGround water in the Pajaro Valley area is derived from three sources: (1) Precipitation within the Pajaro Valley area that reaches the ground-water body by direct infiltration or by seepage from streams, (2) seepage from the Pajaro River as it crosses the Pajaro Valley carrying runoff which originates upstream from the valley, and (3) precipitation in the Soquel-Aptos area that infiltrates and then moves southeastward at depth into the Pajaro Valley area.\r\n\r\nGround water in most wells in the Pajaro Valley area occurs under confined (artesian) conditions; the only exception is ground water in the upper, near-surface part of the alluvium and that in the dune sand. It moves south from the north part of the area and southwest away from the San Andreas fault toward and out under Monterey Bay. In the south part of the area, ground-water movement is almost due west. The San Andreas fault probably is the only fault that has a restrictive effect on the movement of ground water.\r\n\r\nWater levels in wells in the Pajaro Valley area in 1970 averaged about 2 feet lower than that in 1950. Ground-water pumpage averaged 46,100 acre-feet per year during the period 1963 through 1969.\r\n\r\nThere are two distinct ground-water quality zones in the Pajaro Valley area: a shallow, semiperched zone of poor-quality water and a deeper, confined zone of good quality-water. Also, sea-water intrusion has occurred in limited areas near the mouth of the Pajaro River and in the vicinity of McClusky Slough.\r\n\r\nThe channel of the Pajaro River near Aromas and the beds of streams that drain the area north and northeast of Watsonville have the greatest potential for artificial recharge by surface infiltration of water. The major geologic units are smooth and ridged terra materials, plains-forming materials, and crater materials. Mare material is absent. In the absence of extensive stratigraphic datum horizons, the geologic units were tentatively correlated with type areas of the lunar geologic system (Shoemaker and Hackman, 1962; Wilhelms, 1970) by means of a graded sequence of crater morphologies.

Jackass Flats, an intermontane valley bordered by highlands on all sides except for a drainage outlet in the southwestern corner, has an average annual rainfall of 4 inches. \r\n\r\nJackass Flats is underlain by alluvium, colluvium, and volcanic rocks of Cenozoic age and, at greater depth, by sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic age. The alluvium and the colluvium lie above the saturated zone throughout nearly all of Jackass Flats. The Paleozoic sedimentary rocks contain limestone and dolomite units that are excellent water producers elsewhere ; however, these units are too deep in Jackass Flats to be economic sources of water. \r\n\r\nThe only important water-producing unit known in the vicinity of the Nuclear Rocket Development Station is a welded-tuff aquifer, the Topopah Spring Member of the Paintbrush Tuff, which receives no significant recharge. This member contains about 500 feet of highly fractured rock underlying an area 11 miles long and 3 miles wide in western Jackass Flats. Permeability of the aquifer is derived mostly from joints and fractures; however, some permeability may be derived from gas bubbles in the upper part of the unit. Transmissivity, obtained from pumping tests, ranges from 68,000 to 488,000 gallons per day per foot. Volume of the saturated part of the aquifer is about 3.5 cubic miles, and the average specific yield probably ranges from 1 to 5 percent. The volume of ground water in storage is probably within the range of 37-187 billion gallons. This large amount of water should be sufficient to supply the needs of the Nuclear Rocket Development Station for many years. \r\n\r\nWater at the Nuclear Rocket Development Station is used for public supply, construction, test-cell coolant, exhaust cooling, and thermal shielding during nuclear reactor and engine testing, and washdown. Present (1967) average consumption of water is 520,000 gallons per day--all supplied by one well. This supply well and a standby well have a production capability of 1.6 million gallons per day--adequate for present needs. \r\n\r\nWater in the welded-tuff aquifer is of the sodium bicarbonate type. Dissolved-solids content of the water in Jackass Flats is in the general range 230 milligrams per liter in the western part to 890 milligrams per liter in the eastern part.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Although predominantly a highland area centered around the Taurus Mountains (Montes Taurus), it is bounded by three major mare-filled basins: Tranquillitatis, the oldest, to the south; Serenitatis to the west; and Crisium on the east. Most of the geologic units within the quadrangle have been profoundly affected by the formation of these basins and by that of the younger Imbrium basin farther to the northwest. Some of the youngest material on the Moon, believed to be of volcanic origin, blankets part of the mare and terra along the southwest margin of the map. Sampling this material will be a primary objective of the Apollo 17 mission, whose proposed landing site is approximately at lat. 20˚ 10’ N., long. 30˚ 45’ E. near the western edge of the map area.

Several appear to be ancient and may be among the most primitive discernable features on the lunar surface. Major stratigraphic units consist of the Janssen Formation, hummocky terra and pitted plains materials, and extensive clusters of bowl-shaped craters. Two of these units, hummocky terra and pitted plains, are probably volcanic whereas the Janssen Formation and bowl-shaped craters appear to have been formed by ejecta from the multi-ringed Nectaris and Imbrium basins outside the quadrangle.
