The two main units in this belt are the Jurassic (?) and Cretaceous Valdez (?) Group composed of flysch deposits and the McHugh Complex composed of oceanic metavolcanic sequences tectonically mixed with metaclastic rocks derived from a continental magmatic arc. Deformation of the McHugh Complex is characterized by pervasive, closely spaced shear fractures and is melange-like in some areas. Deformation of the Valdez (?) Group is characterized by tight folding that was initiated before the sediments were completely lithified. The folds have steeply dipping axial surfaces that are overturned to the northwest in some areas and to the southeast in other areas. The Jurassic and(or) Cretaceous McHugh Complex is separated from the Valdez (?) Group by the Eagle River thrust fault. The Valdez (?) Group was probably deposited primarily on oceanic crust that was collapsed against the continental margin in latest Cretaceous to early Tertiary time.&nbsp;</p><p>An accurate belt of upper Paleozoic to lower Mesozoic rocks to the north and west had been deformed, accreted to the continental margin, and intruded by plutons prior to the deposition of the Jurassic (?) and Cretaceous sediments. Rocks of the continental terrane that underlie the Wrangell and Talkeetna Mountains and the Alaska Range are locally exposed in the map area north and west of the Knik fault zone. The estimates, compiled by specialists of the U.S. Geological Survey, are generally made on geologic projections of favorable rocks and on anticipated frequency of the energy resource in the favorable rocks. Accuracy of the estimates probably ranges from 20 to 50 percent for identified-recoverable resources to about an order of magnitude for undiscovered-submarginal resources. \r\n\r\nThe total coal resource base in the United States is estimated to be about 3,200 billion tons, of which 200-390 billion tons can be considered in the category identified and recoverable. More than 70 percent of current production comes from the Appalachian basin where the resource base, better known than for the United States as a whole, is about 330 billion tons, of which 22 billion tons is identified and recoverable. Coals containing less than 1 percent sulfur are the premium coals. These are abundant in the western coal fields, but in the Appalachian basin the resource base for low-sulfur coal is estimated to be only a little more than 100 billion tons, of which 12 billion tons is identified and recoverable. \r\n\r\nOf the many estimates of petroleum liquids and natural-gas resources, those of the U.S. Geological Survey are the largest because, in general, our estimates include the largest proportion of favorable ground for exploration. We estimate the total resource base for petroleum liquids to be about 2,900 billion barrels, of which 52 billion barrels is identified and recoverable. Of the total resource base, some 600 billion barrels is in Alaska or offshore from Alaska, 1,500 billion barrels is offshore from the United States, and 1,300 billion barrels is onshore in the conterminous United States. Identified-recoverable resources of petroleum liquids corresponding to these geographic units are 11, 6, and 36 billion barrels, respectively. \r\n\r\nThe total natural-gas resource of the United States is estimated to be about 6,600 trillion cubic feet, of which 290 trillion cubic feet is identified and recoverable. In geographic units comparable to those for petroleum liquids, the resource bases are 1,400, 3,400, and 2,900 trillion cubic feet, and the identified-recoverable resources are 31, 40, and 220 trillion cubic feet, respectively. \r\n\r\nUranium resources in conventional deposits, where uranium is the major product, are estimated at 1,600,000 tons of U3O8, of which 250,000 tons is identified and recoverable. A potential byproduct resource of more than 7 million tons of U3O8, is estimated for phosphate rock, but none of this resource is recoverable under present economic conditions. \r\n\r\nThe resources of heat in potential geothermal energy sources are poorly known. The total resource base for the United States is certainly greater than 10 22 calories, of which only 2.5 ? 10 18 calories can be considered identified and recoverable at present. \r\n\r\nOil shale is estimated to contain 26 trillion barrels of oil. This report, in the form of a catalog, summarizes the results of routine earthquake locations from that network for the year 1971, and provides the basic data for further studies to be published elsewhere. Similar catalogs for 1969 and 1970 have been prepared by Lee, Roller, Bauer, and Johnson, (1972), and Lee, Roller, Meagher, and Bennett, (1972).</p><p>We located a total of 2,429 events that occurred in 1971 from primarily 34,111 first P-wave arrival times recorded at 121 seismograph stations. Among these events, 339 were blasts (mostly in quarries), 8 were suspected blasts, and 41 were either too far away from available stations or too small in magnitude to be adequately located. The remaining 2,041 events which were identified as earthquakes are presented in the catalog. The 121 seismograph stations consisted of 93 telemetered stations operated by NCER, and 28 stations operated by several other organizations. Readings from the latter stations were obtained through the courtesy of the Seismographic Stations, University of California, Berkeley, the Earthquake Mechanism Laboratory, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, San Francisco, and the California Department of Water Resources, Sacramento.</p><p>Data on local earthquakes in northern California, Nevada, and Oregon have been published in the Bulletins of the Seismographic Stations of the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) for many decades. The present catalog covers earthquakes which occurred in a smaller area but in greater detail than those covered by the UCB Bulletins. For example, the UCB Bulletins for 1971 (Cloud and Qamar, 1972; Cloud, Tomblin, and Litehiser, 1972) list a total of 116 earthquakes (most with magnitude greater than 2.5) in the region covered by this report (a coastal strip from Santa Rosa to Parkfield). In order to make intelligent decisions regarding use and management of water resources for recreation and other demands, an analysis of hydrologic factors related to recreation is essential.</p><p>The Manistee River is one of Michigan's well-known trout streams-a stream having numerous public access sites and campgrounds. Upstream from Cameron Bridge (see location map) the Manistee is rated as a first-class trout stream but below Cameron Bridge the river is rated only as a fair trout stream by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. As a Michigan canoe trail it is second only to the Au Sable River in popularity. Esthetically, the Manistee is one of Michigan's most attractive rivers, its waters flowing cool and clean, and around each bend a pleasant wilderness scene. This report deals with that part of the river upstream from State Highway M-66 at Smithville. Several hard-surface roads give access to the upper river as shown on the location map. Numerous dirt roads and trails give access to the river at intermediate points. The recreational values of the Manistee depend on its characteristics of streamflow, water quality, and bed and banks. This atlas describes these characteristics and shows how they relate to recreational use.</p><p>Much of the information presented here was obtained from basic records of the U.S. Geological Survey's Water Resources Division. Additional information was obtained from field reconnaissance surveys in 1968 and 1969. The study was made in cooperation with the Michigan Geological Survey, Gerald E. Eddy, Chief. The flood, on many major streams were the highest known since the river valleys were settled. Maximum discharges were as much as twice the discharge of a 50-year flood. In southern New York, large areas in Corning, Elmire, Wellsville, Salamanca, and in many smaller communities were inundated to depths of several feet.
