The instrument used was a commercial \"falling stream\" turbidimeter that measured the relative transparency of a gravity induced smooth flat sample stream formed as the flow drops vertically from an orifice.</p>\n<p>Output results were recorded on a strip-chart recorder as a function of concentration, up to about 100,000 mg/2, for a range of particle sizes and for three kinds of sediment--a fine sand, a silty alluvial soil, and a clayey residual soil. The sensitivity range was improved by use of both the 1/8- and 1/16-inch thick orifices. The use of the two orifice or nozzle sizes provided data useful in evaluation of the effect of particle size and type of sediment at different concentrations. The unique relative transparency-concentration relationships were more linear for coarse than for fine sediments of a given kind. It was concluded that curvature in this relationship resulted from light reflections from the surface of the particles and (or) the fact that some particles moved through the system while in the \"shadow\" of other particles closer to the light source.</p>\n<p>The ratio of suspended-sediment concentration to the square root of the median particle size of sand-sized sediments was found to be a useful parameter for elimination of the effect of particle size in the relative transparency-concentration relationships. Thus it was possible to evaluate the effect of the different type of sediment on the relative transparency independent of particle size. The use of this parameter to eliminate the effect of particle size was unsuccessful for finer sediments. -</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/70173978","usgsCitation":"Guy, H., and Olson, R., 1972, Falling-stream turbidimeter as a means of measuring sediment concentrations in streams: Open-File Report, 58 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70173978.","productDescription":"58 p.","numberOfPages":"62","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":518,"text":"Oregon Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":324035,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/70173978.jpg"},{"id":324183,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70173978/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"576913bae4b07657d19ff052","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Guy, Harold P.","contributorId":6434,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Guy","given":"Harold P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":639911,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Olson, Richard C.","contributorId":172202,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Olson","given":"Richard C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":639912,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

At most of the sites, the changes in Na and Cl are very small while enrichment of Ca and Sr and depletion of Mg and SO<sub>4</sub> is typical of patterns observed in similar types of sediment recovered on previous legs. At Sites 139 and 140, off the African coast, and Site 144, off the coast of South America, systematic increases in concentration with depth are found for Na and Cl. At these sites, the concentration changes, in Ca, Mg, SO<sub>4</sub> and Sr generally follow diagenic patterns observed previously, but there is some indication of other factors affecting Mg concentrations. The chain cuts obliquely across the older Cretaceous structural patterns of that sea floor. While the pattern of the chain as a whole is linear, the individual volcanoes lie on short, sigmoidal, en echelon loci that are subparallel with respect to each other and that may represent extensional features in the crust and upper mantle. In general, the order of eurption progressed from northwest to southeaśt along the chain, but the rate of progression of volcanism along individual loci is nonlinear where best studied in the southeastern part of the chain. Furthermore, simultaneous eruptions appear to have occurred within a distance along the chain of about 200 to 400 km. The available data are consistent with a genesis related to the motion of the Pacific crust over a melting spot in the mantle. This melting spot, which may be due to either excess heat or pressure release, appears to have a diameter of about 300 km and is presently centered slightly north of the island of Hawaii. We concur with the idea that the bend in the Hawaiian-Emperor chain probably reflects a significant change in the motion of the Pacific plate. Our best estimate of the age of the Hawaiian-Emperor bend, based on the existing radiometric data, is 24.6 ± 2.5 m.y., which correlates with a time of increased tectonic activity in the western Pacific island arcs and along the northern and eastern boundaries of the Pacific plate. The vector change in the motion of the Pacific plate (with respect to the melting spot) that is required to produce the bend is about 12 cm/yr in a west-southwest-ward direction. © 1972, The Geological Society of America, Inc.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1972)83[601:HCAIRT]2.0.CO;2","issn":"00167606","usgsCitation":"Jackson, E., Silver, E.A., and Dalrymple, G.B., 1972, Hawaiian-emperor chain and its relation to cenozoic circumpacific tectonics: Geological Society of America Bulletin, v. 83, no. 3, p. 601-618, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1972)83[601:HCAIRT]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"18 p. A possible analog of these peaks on Earth is the central uplift of the Sierra Madera cryptoexplosion structure, a probable impact scar (astrobleme) in stratified Permian and Cretaceous rocks of west Texas. The most conspicuous part of this 12-km-wide structure is its central uplift, 6 to 8 km across, in which the oldest rocks have been raised 1,200 m above their normal position. The uplift is surrounded by a structural depression, beyond which is a concentric rim containing some folds and circumferential normal faults with downthrow toward the center. The intensity of folding and faulting increases inward from the flanks of the central uplift toward a central zone about 2 km across where dips and fold plunges are near vertical or overturned. As in salt domes, the beds moved inward as well as upward to occupy their present positions, causing faulting and radial folding due to crowding in the center. Repetition by folding due to inward movement of upper beds over lower appears to have been followed by upward movement of the core of the uplift pulling away from the flanks by faulting. Minor outward-directed thrusting may have been caused by gravitational spreading of the rising dome. The structural depression surrounding the uplift resulted from tectonic thinning accompanying the inward movement of rocks in the uplift.</p><p>Analogy with experimental craters and with other cryptoexplosion structures indicates that the uplift at Sierra Madera protruded into a crater (since destroyed by erosion) that was about 12 km across. Inasmuch as the rocks forming such uplifts are derived from below the crater floors, analogous peaks in lunar craters such as Copernicus may offer samples of lunar crust uplifted from distances below the crater floor on the order of one-tenth of the crater diameter.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1972)83[2795:SOSMTA]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Howard, K.A., Offield, T.W., and Wilshire, H.G., 1972, Structure of Sierra Madera, Texas, as a guide to central peaks of lunar craters: GSA Bulletin, v. 83, no. 9, p. 2795-2808, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1972)83[2795:SOSMTA]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"2795","endPage":"2808","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":355810,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"Sierra Madera crater","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -103.326416015625,\n              29.878755346037977\n            ],\n            [\n              -101.25,\n              29.878755346037977\n            ],\n            [\n              -101.25,\n              31.662732913235317\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.326416015625,\n              31.662732913235317\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.326416015625,\n              29.878755346037977\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"83","issue":"9","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Howard, Keith A. 0000-0002-6462-2947 khoward@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6462-2947","contributorId":3439,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Howard","given":"Keith","email":"khoward@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":740470,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Offield, Terry W.","contributorId":15196,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Offield","given":"Terry","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":740471,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Wilshire, H. Potassium-argon dating indicates that the minimum time between eruptions of individual but genetically related ash-flow cooling units is on the order of 0.8 m.y. As this interval is long in comparison with the secular variation of the direction of the geomagnetic field, in a given volcanic province the direction of natural thermoremanent magnetization is a unique characteristic of each cooling unit. Ash-flow sheets investigated include the Stone Cabin Formation, the tuff of Pancake Summit, the Windous Butte Formation, the Needles Range Formation, the Bates Mountain Tuff, and the tuff of Clipper Gap, of Oliogcene to early Miocene age. Ospreys do not return to the United States as 1-year-olds, but an estimated 28 to 55 percent return to their natal vicinity (state where hatched or an adjacent state) as 2-year-olds. The 2-year-olds (presumably nonbreeders) are estimated to represent 5 to 10 percent of the population on the northern breeding grounds. Nest studies suggest that about 6 percent of the population on the breeding grounds consists of nonbreeders (presumably the 2-year-olds). These birds are associated with nests but do not lay eggs or exhibit brooding behavior. The point to be made to individuals conducting nest studies on ospreys is that nests should not be classified as active if eggs are not laid, even though a pair is present. If nests with no eggs are excluded from studies, we believe the observed recruitment rates can be validly compared with the recruitment standard (production rate required to maintain a stable population) of Henny and Wight (1969).</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3799242","usgsCitation":"Henny, C.J., and Van Velzen, W., 1972, Migration patterns and wintering localities of American ospreys: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 36, no. 4, p. 1133-1141, https://doi.org/10.2307/3799242.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"1133","endPage":"1141","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":198217,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"36","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a60e4b07f02db635540","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Henny, Charles J.","contributorId":12578,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Henny","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":332757,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Van Velzen, W.T.","contributorId":72080,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Van Velzen","given":"W.T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":332758,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The area is underlain by gently dipping mudstones interlayered with mafic volcanic rocks and lenticular beds of limestone, mainly of Eocene age. The layered rocks were intruded and slightly metamorphosed by large masses of gabbro and related mafic rocks that are now largely serpentinized. The copper deposits are in an east-trending belt about 20 km long, near the center of which is the town of Maden. A broad geochemical anomaly extends north-northwest and south-southeast from this belt, its axis passing near Maden. Near the mines the main igneous mass has a gently dipping roof and steep sides. Around and south of Maden, where the mass has barely been unroofed, are many roof pendants and remnants of sedimentary and volcanic material. One of these contains the largest mine in the area--the Ana Yatak. The largest deposit, the Aria Yatak ore body, occurs in a canoe-shaped pendant of mudstone that occupies atrough about 1 km long and 1/2 km wide in the top of the intrusive. The present vertical extent is about 170 meters. In the central and western parts of the trough the mudstone is chloritized and partly replaced by ore minerals. The main ore body is about 550 X 300 X 50 m in maximum dimensions. It consists mainly of pyrite and chalcopyrite, and locally it contains abundant magnetite or pyrrhotite. The gangue consists predominantly of chlorite, smaller amounts of quartz, and very minor amounts of calcite and barite. The massive sulfide ore body is underlain by \"impregnation ore\" in which veinlets and irregular small masses of sulfides are embedded in chloritized mudstone. A zone rich in supergene chalcocite, corellite, and bornite lies between the sulfide mass and the well-developed gossan in many places, and this was extensively mined in ancient times. The Mihrap Dagi mine, about 1 km northwest of the Aria Yatak deposit, is also near a contact between the intrusive and the sedimentary rock. It too contains a massive sulfide ore body accompanied by chloritized rock, but it contains little \"impregnation ore.\" In the Ergani-Maden area, ore deposition followed a long history of sedimentation, lithification, faulting, intrusion of mafic igneous rocks, serpentinization, and further faulting, and was part of a broad-scale introduction of metal into the sedimentary, extrusive, and intrusive rocks. Thus it is epigenetic. The major ore bodies are fracturecontrolled replacement masses. Adularia which occurs in veins a few hundred meters south of the main sulfide ore bodies is inferred to have formed contemporaneously with the sulfide and shows a potassium-argon age of 31.5 +/- 0.8 m.y. If this inference is correcthe deposits formed during middle Oligocene or slightly later. </p>","language":"English","publisher":" Economic Geology Publishing Company","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.67.6.701","issn":" 0361-0128","usgsCitation":"Griffitts, W., Albers, J.P., and Oener, O., 1972, Massive sulfide copper deposits of the Ergani-Maden area, Southeastern Turkey: Economic Geology, v. 67, no. 6, p. 701-716, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.67.6.701.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"701","endPage":"716","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":367972,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Turkey","otherGeospatial":"Ergani-Maden ","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n 39.364013671875,\n 38.09998264736481\n ],\n [\n 40.36376953125,\n 38.09998264736481\n ],\n [\n 40.36376953125,\n 38.74551518488265\n ],\n [\n 39.364013671875,\n 38.74551518488265\n ],\n [\n 39.364013671875,\n 38.09998264736481\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"67","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1972-10-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Griffitts, W.
