The resulting strain can be released by creep, by earthquakes of moderate size, or (as near San Francisco and Los Angeles) by great earthquakes. Microearthquakes, as mapped by a dense seismograph network in central California, generally coincide with zones of the San Andreas fault system that are creeping. Microearthquakes are few and scattered in zones where elastic energy is being stored. Changes in the rate of strain, as recorded by tiltmeter arrays, have been observed before several earthquakes of about magnitude 4. Changes in fluid pressure may control timing of seismic activity and make it possible to control natural earthquakes by controlling variations in fluid pressure in fault zones. An experiment in earthquake control is underway at the Rangely oil field in Colorado, where the rates of fluid injection and withdrawal in experimental wells are being controlled.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0040-1951(72)90080-7","issn":"00401951","usgsCitation":"Healy, J.H., Lee, W., Pakiser, L.C., Raleigh, C., and Wood, M., 1972, Prospects for earthquake prediction and control: Tectonophysics, v. 14, no. 3-4, p. 319-332, https://doi.org/10.1016/0040-1951(72)90080-7.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"319","endPage":"332","numberOfPages":"14","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219297,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"San Andreas Fault","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -122.29980468749999,\n 35.06597313798418\n ],\n [\n -117.24609374999999,\n 35.06597313798418\n ],\n [\n -117.24609374999999,\n 42.13082130188811\n ],\n [\n -122.29980468749999,\n 42.13082130188811\n ],\n [\n -122.29980468749999,\n 35.06597313798418\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"14","issue":"3-4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a8f57e4b0c8380cd7f6e6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Healy, J. Spectra are taken of the sought element and of various other substances whose spectra interfere with that of the sought element. A weighting function is then computed for application to spectra of unknown materials. The technique was used to determine calcium by radiative-neutron-capture gamma-ray analysis in the presence of interfering elements, notably titanium, and the results were compared with those for two popular methods of peak area integration. Although linearity of response was similar for the methods, the linear combination technique was much better at rejecting interferences. For analyses involving mixtures of unknown composition the technique consequently offers improved sensitivity.

","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0029-554X(72)90521-6","issn":"0029554X","usgsCitation":"Tanner, A., Bhargava, R., Senftle, F.E., and Brinkerhoff, J., 1972, Radiative-neutron-capture gamma-ray analysis by a linear combination technique: Nuclear Instruments and Methods, v. 102, no. 1, p. 61-72, https://doi.org/10.1016/0029-554X(72)90521-6.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"61","endPage":"72","numberOfPages":"12","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219431,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"102","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a9398e4b0c8380cd80f0f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tanner, A.B.","contributorId":44155,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tanner","given":"A.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":358141,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bhargava, R.C.","contributorId":58771,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bhargava","given":"R.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":358144,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Senftle, F. Nymphs that hatched in June and July emerged as adults in 13-14 months (titled 1-year cycle) and nymphs hatched in late August or September emerged in 22 months (titled 2-year cycle). Although an estimated 79% of the newborn nymphs begin life in the 2-year cycle group, only 53% of the emergent adults were in this group because of mortality. Standing crop was highest in the shore area, although a major migration away from the shore occurred in the spring. This migration was most intense when the population density exceeded 100/m2. Biomass ranged from 260 to 1070 mg/m2 dry weight over the study period. Instantaneous emergence rates were higher than predatory mortality rates but were only operative from about 1 July to 15 September.Production was estimated by two methods from extensive sampling in 1964 on a 1256 hectare section of the reservoir. The growth method yielded 1.50 gm/m2 dry weight and the Hamilton method, 1.67 gm/m2. The turnover ratio of 2.81 calculated from these data multiplied by the standing crop over the rest of the reservoir resulted in an average annual production of 15.6 kg/hectare for the reservoir.The Hamilton method was applied to less extensive collections from 1964 to 1969. This paper describes the limnology and fish ecology of two such lakes in British Columbia, five in Alaska, and one in Kamchatka. Then we discuss the following general topics: the biogenic eutrophication of nursery lakes from the nutrients released from salmon carcasses wherein during years of highest numbers of spawners, lake phosphate balances in Lakes Babine, Iliamna, and Dalnee are significantly affected; the use of nursery lakes by young sockeye that reveals five patterns related to size and configuration of lake basins and the distribution of spawning areas; the interactions between various life history stages of sockeye salmon and such resident predators, competitors, and prey as Arctic char, lake trout, Dolly Varden, cutthroat trout, lake whitefish, pygmy whitefish, pond smelt, sticklebacks, and sculpins; the self-regulation of sockeye salmon abundance in these nursery lakes as controlled by density-dependent processes; the interrelations between young sockeye salmon biomass and growth rates, and zooplankton abundance in Babine Lake; and finally, the diel, vertical, pelagial migratory behavior of young sockeye in Babine Lake and the new hypothesis dealing with bioenergetic conservation.
","language":"English","publisher":"NRC Research Press","doi":"10.1139/f72-116","usgsCitation":"Hartman, W.L., and Burgner, R., 1972, Limnology and fish ecology of sockeye salmon nursery lakes of the world: Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada, v. 29, no. 6, p. 699-715, https://doi.org/10.1139/f72-116.","productDescription":"17 p.","startPage":"699","endPage":"715","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":133278,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"29","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b16e4b07f02db6a5182","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hartman, Wilbur L.","contributorId":14763,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hartman","given":"Wilbur","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308157,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Burgner, R.L.","contributorId":107661,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Burgner","given":"R.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308158,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

An unrestricted inflow rate based on this data was calculated to be 380 cubic meters per day (70 gallons per minute) which compared well with the measured restricted-inflow rate of 164 cubic meters per day (30 gallons per minute) for hole UA-1 at the end of November 1970.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/70156965","usgsCitation":"Ballance, W.C., and Beetem, W., 1972, Water inflow into hole UA-1, Amchitka Island, Alaska, ii, 31 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70156965.","productDescription":"ii, 31 p.","numberOfPages":"36","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":307879,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr474456.JPG"},{"id":308583,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70156965/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Amchitka Island, Aleutian Islands","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              178.584136963,\n              51.63677159243599\n            ],\n            [\n              178.592376709,\n              51.61290019118336\n            ],\n            [\n              179.21585083,\n              51.3254629443313\n            ],\n            [\n             179.508361816,\n              51.37520943448463\n            ],\n            [\n              179.057922363,\n              51.587309751245456\n            ],\n            [\n              178.628082275,\n              51.67936786087718\n            ],\n            [\n              178.584136963,\n              51.63677159243599\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"55f7efcde4b05d6c4e4fa9a9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ballance, Wilbur C.","contributorId":50436,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ballance","given":"Wilbur","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":571259,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Beetem, W.A.","contributorId":19173,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Beetem","given":"W.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":571260,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
