The results are abstracted from an unpublished manuscript by the junior author who reports on the measurements which Leopold began 10 or more years ago and to which in more recent years Emmett has added new sites and has carried on the annual remeasurement. The results are those from \"mass-movement lines\", which consist of a series of pins or iron rods, 10 inches (25 cm) long driven vertically into the ground along a straight line-of-sight, secured at each end with stiff iron posts. The Survey consists of setting a theodolite over one of the end bench marks and orienting on the other. The distance of each individual pin from the line of sight is recorded. Age was determined from otoliths, the marginal zones of which were opaque from December to May and translucent from June to November. Average lengths of the age groups and annual increments were measured from a curve fitted by inspection to point estimates of lengths at capture. Burbot grew 5.7 inches during the first year of life and 4.3 inches during the second. Later annual increments through the twelfth year ranged from 1.2 to 2.6 inches. Average total lengths and calculated weights were 16.1 inches and 1.1 pounds at age V and 23.4 inches and 3.2 pounds at age X. First maturity was at age I, at a total length of 9.7 inches for males and 10.7 inches for females; all fish were mature at age V and at lengths greater than 16.4 inches (males) and 15.9 inches (females). Most burbot collected near shore in the Apostle Islands area in late January and February were spent, but none collected in offshore areas during January and March had spawned. The estimated number of eggs in the ovaries of eight burbot 14.7-21.3 inches long ranged from about 268,800 to 1,154,000 and averaged about 812,300. Burbot of all sizes fed on fish and crustaceans. Fish heavily predominated in the food of large burbot taken during the winter (99.6% of the volume) but crustaceans (Mysis and Pontoporeia) became increasingly important during the summer and fall (when they contributed more than 73% of the volume). Due to the wide variety and large volume of food consumed, the burbot is probably a significant competitor of many other species.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Transactions of the American Fisheries Society","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","publisherLocation":"London, UK","doi":"10.1577/1548-8659(1972)101<667:AGRAFO>2.0.CO;2","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Bailey, M.M., 1972, Age, growth, reproduction, and food of the burbot, Lota lota (Linnaeus), in southwestern Lake Superior: Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, v. 101, no. 4, p. 667-674, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1972)101<667:AGRAFO>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"667","endPage":"674","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":133216,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":266939,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1972)101<667:AGRAFO>2.0.CO;2"}],"volume":"101","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae3e4b07f02db689297","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bailey, Merryll M.","contributorId":47724,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bailey","given":"Merryll","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308022,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Less than 2 percent of American earth scientists read and use Russian literature in the original to any significant extent. About 30 percent know some French, German, and Spanish, but only a much smaller proportion uses these languages in practice. The most important sources of knowledge about foreign work are translation journals, almost exclusively from Russian, and foreign scientists who write in American and international journals. Less than 0.5 percent of Russian earth science books are translated or known in the United States. Scientific provincialism is strong and increasing in the United States, owing to or demonstrated by the publications explosion and squeeze on libraries and scientists, weakening or abandonment of language requirements in universities, and cessation of all broad earth science abstracting services in English. Suggestions for improving communication of foreign literature include earlier exposure to languages in schools and stress on critical use rather than perfunctory examinations. A \"critical mass\" of linguistically competent and active scientists is necessary to find the important, not merely important-sounding, titles in the literature morass and introduce them into widely read earth science media.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Toward the development of a geoscience information system : a symposium : proceedings of the Sixth Annual Meeting of the Geoscience Information Society, November 1, 1971, Washington, D.C.","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"Sixth Annual Meeting of the Geoscience Information Society","conferenceDate":"November 1, 1971","conferenceLocation":"Washington, DC","language":"English","publisher":"Geoscience Information Society","usgsCitation":"Manheim, F.T., 1972, Foreign literature and translations in earth science, in Toward the development of a geoscience information system : a symposium : proceedings of the Sixth Annual Meeting of the Geoscience Information Society, November 1, 1971, Washington, D.C., v. 2, Washington, DC, November 1, 1971, p. 11-52.","productDescription":"42 p.","startPage":"11","endPage":"52","costCenters":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":370544,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Manheim, Frank T. 0000-0003-4005-4524","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4005-4524","contributorId":20770,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Manheim","given":"Frank","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":778206,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The flood releases from Camanche Reservoir are to be restricted, insofar as possible, so that the flows in the Mokelumne River will not exceed 5,000 cfs (cubic feet per second) as measured at the gaging station below Camanche Dam.
\n
\n
Areas of inundation and computed floodwater profiles are based on channel conditions in late 1970 and on observed water-surface profiles during flood releases of about 5,000 cfs in January 1969 and January 1970. The inundated area shown on the maps (appendix A) and the water-surface elevations indicated on the cross sections (appendix G) are for the flood releases of those dates.
\n
\n
The following conclusions are contingent on there being no levee failures during periods of high flow and no significant channel changes since the flood release of January 1970.
\n
\n
1. High tides in San Francisco Bay and, to a greater degree, flood stages on the Cosumnes River, cause backwater in the study reach. Severe backwater conditions occurring simultaneously with a flow of 5,000 cfs in the Mokelumne River can increase the flood stage 4 to 6 feet at Bensons Ferry Bridge (cross section 1). Backwater effects decrease in an upstream direction and are less than 0.5 foot at cross section 35, a river distance of 8.6 miles upstream from cross section 1, and 1.5 miles downstream from the Peltier Road bridge.
\n
\n
2. In the reach between cross sections 1 and 35, a 5,000 cfs release from Camanche Reservoir with maximum backwater effect (measured at cross section 1 at the mouth of the Cosumnes River) is confined within the natural or leveed banks except on the right bank flood plain between cross sections 12 and 19.
\n
\n
3. Upstream from cross section 35, there is overbank flooding at a flow of 5,000 cfs between cross sections 48 and 51, and 62 and 67.5. An increase in flow from 5,000 to 6,000 cfs will cause flooding between cross sections 43 and 47, 52 and 56, and 73 and 85.
\n
\n
4. A discharge of 5,000 cfs will pass through all bridge openings in the study reach except that of the Western Pacific Railroad Co. bridge at cross section 4. If large amounts of debris lodge on the railroad bridge when backwater from the Cosumnes River occurs, the debris could cause higher stages and flooding along the right bank between cross sections 5 and 12.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey Water Resources Division","publisherLocation":"Menlo Park, CA","doi":"10.3133/70048669","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with The Reclamation Board, State of California","usgsCitation":"Simpson, R., 1972, Determination of channel capacity of the Mokelumne River downstream from Camanche Dam, San Joaquin and Sacramento Counties, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report, iv, 64 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70048669.","productDescription":"iv, 64 p.","numberOfPages":"68","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":278502,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/70048669.jpg"},{"id":279571,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70048669/report.pdf"}],"scale":"500000","country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Sacramento County;San Joaquin County","otherGeospatial":"Camanche Reservoir;Mokelumne River","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -121.765,38.0579 ], [ -121.765,38.7007 ], [ -120.816,38.7007 ], [ -120.816,38.0579 ], [ -121.765,38.0579 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5270d903e4b0f7a10664fba4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Simpson, R.G.","contributorId":16016,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Simpson","given":"R.G.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":485363,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Reports in this series are prepared cooperatively by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Utah Division of Water Resources and are designed to provide data to enable interested parties such as legislators, administrators, and planners to keep abreast of changing ground-water conditions.

This report, like the others (see references, p. 21), contains information on well construction, ground-water withdrawals, water-level changes, and related changes in precipitation and streamflow. It also contains supplementary data that are related to ground-water use in some areas. In reports of this series, the inclusion of such supplementary data as graphs showing chemical quality of water and maps showing water-table configuration is intended only for those years or areas for which applicable data are available and are important to a discussion of changing ground-water conditions.

The report includes individual discussions of the most important areas of ground-water withdrawal in the State for the calendar year 1970. Water-level fluctuations, however, are described for the period spring 1970 to spring 1971. Many of the data used in the report were collected by the Geological Survey in cooperation with the Division of Water Rights, Utah Department of Natural Resources.
","language":"English","publisher":"Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water Resources","publisherLocation":"Salt Lake City, UT","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the State of Utah","usgsCitation":"Cordova, R., Bjorklund, L., McGreevy, L.J., Bolke, E., Sumison, C., Herbert, L.R., Butler, R., Mower, R.W., Sandberg, G.W., and Adams, D.B., 1971, Developing a state water plan: Ground-water conditions in Utah, spring of 1971: Cooperative Investigations Report 9, viii, 72 p.","productDescription":"viii, 72 p.","numberOfPages":"80","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":333680,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":333679,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.waterrights.utah.gov/cgi-bin/libview.exe?Modinfo=Viewpub&LIBNUM=50-1-194"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58863a13e4b0cad700058b63","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cordova, R.M.","contributorId":77511,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cordova","given":"R.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":659723,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bjorklund, L.J.","contributorId":14035,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bjorklund","given":"L.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":659724,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"McGreevy, L.
