The area is underlain by gently dipping mudstones interlayered with mafic volcanic rocks and lenticular beds of limestone, mainly of Eocene age. The layered rocks were intruded and slightly metamorphosed by large masses of gabbro and related mafic rocks that are now largely serpentinized. The copper deposits are in an east-trending belt about 20 km long, near the center of which is the town of Maden. A broad geochemical anomaly extends north-northwest and south-southeast from this belt, its axis passing near Maden. Near the mines the main igneous mass has a gently dipping roof and steep sides. Around and south of Maden, where the mass has barely been unroofed, are many roof pendants and remnants of sedimentary and volcanic material. One of these contains the largest mine in the area--the Ana Yatak. The largest deposit, the Aria Yatak ore body, occurs in a canoe-shaped pendant of mudstone that occupies atrough about 1 km long and 1/2 km wide in the top of the intrusive. The present vertical extent is about 170 meters. In the central and western parts of the trough the mudstone is chloritized and partly replaced by ore minerals. The main ore body is about 550 X 300 X 50 m in maximum dimensions. It consists mainly of pyrite and chalcopyrite, and locally it contains abundant magnetite or pyrrhotite. The gangue consists predominantly of chlorite, smaller amounts of quartz, and very minor amounts of calcite and barite. The massive sulfide ore body is underlain by \"impregnation ore\" in which veinlets and irregular small masses of sulfides are embedded in chloritized mudstone. A zone rich in supergene chalcocite, corellite, and bornite lies between the sulfide mass and the well-developed gossan in many places, and this was extensively mined in ancient times. The Mihrap Dagi mine, about 1 km northwest of the Aria Yatak deposit, is also near a contact between the intrusive and the sedimentary rock. It too contains a massive sulfide ore body accompanied by chloritized rock, but it contains little \"impregnation ore.\" In the Ergani-Maden area, ore deposition followed a long history of sedimentation, lithification, faulting, intrusion of mafic igneous rocks, serpentinization, and further faulting, and was part of a broad-scale introduction of metal into the sedimentary, extrusive, and intrusive rocks. Thus it is epigenetic. The major ore bodies are fracturecontrolled replacement masses. Adularia which occurs in veins a few hundred meters south of the main sulfide ore bodies is inferred to have formed contemporaneously with the sulfide and shows a potassium-argon age of 31.5 +/- 0.8 m.y. If this inference is correcthe deposits formed during middle Oligocene or slightly later.
","language":"English","publisher":" Economic Geology Publishing Company","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.67.6.701","issn":" 0361-0128","usgsCitation":"Griffitts, W., Albers, J.P., and Oener, O., 1972, Massive sulfide copper deposits of the Ergani-Maden area, Southeastern Turkey: Economic Geology, v. 67, no. 6, p. 701-716, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.67.6.701.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"701","endPage":"716","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":367972,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Turkey","otherGeospatial":"Ergani-Maden ","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n 39.364013671875,\n 38.09998264736481\n ],\n [\n 40.36376953125,\n 38.09998264736481\n ],\n [\n 40.36376953125,\n 38.74551518488265\n ],\n [\n 39.364013671875,\n 38.74551518488265\n ],\n [\n 39.364013671875,\n 38.09998264736481\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"67","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1972-10-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Griffitts, W. Inhibition of Na+,K+-activated adenosinetriphosphatase (NaK-ATPase) and Mg++-dependent ATPase (Mg-ATPase) by DDT, endosulfan and dicofol has been demonstrated in gill, brain and kidney microsomes of rainbow trout (1,2). Intestinal and gill ATPases in marine teleosts were recently reported to be sensitive to organochlorines (3). The fulvous tree duck (Dendrocygna bicolor), which depends on the rice field habitats and is highly susceptible to aldrin-dieldrin poisoning, is suffering a serious population decline in that area. Dead waterfowl, shorebirds, and passerines were collected on study areas in Wharton, Brazoria, and Chambers counties, Texas, from 1967 through 1971. Residues of aldrin or dieldrin were found in all samples of bird casualties and in all eggs, scavengers, predators, fish, frogs, invertebrates, and soils. Fulvous tree ducks appeared to be less resistant to aldrin than other ducks. Dieldrin residues in brains of dead fulvous tree ducks were low, but whole-body residues were as high as 16 ppm. Brains of other dead ducks and geese averaged 10 ppm dieldrin. Some dead birds were exposed by eating treated rice seed, but many dead birds with high dieldrin residues were species that feed largely on invertebrates. Although soil residues were low, snails and crayfish contained enough aldrin and dieldrin (average 9.5 ppm) to account for deaths in birds that fed heavily on these invertebrates over a period of time. When fulvous tree ducks were penned for 3 days in fields aerially planted with treated seed, 3 of 10 birds died with brain residues of 2.5, 2.9, and 6.8 ppm dieldrin, and others were intoxicated. None of eight died, and some gained weight, when penned in fields planted with untreated seed. This study adds further evidence for the suspected lethal effects of aldrin-treated rice seed on wild birds and other wildlife in rice field habitats.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3799422","usgsCitation":"Flickinger, E.L., and King, K.A., 1972, Some effects of aldrin-treated rice on Gulf Coast wildlife: The principal experimental group consisted of 20 birds fed a dietary dosage of 100 ppm of DDT for 13 days. After 2 days of full rations of untreated food, they were subjected to food restriction. Food was reduced to 43 percent of normal. Seven of the 20 birds died within 4 days. No birds died in the three control groups, treated as follows: ( 1 ) 20 birds fed 100 ppm DDT for 13 days and full rations of untreated food thereafter, (2) 20 birds fed only untreated food but subjected to food restriction, and (3) 20 birds fed full rations of untreated food throughout. In a pilot study, birds were fed 100, 200, or 300 ppm of DDT and subjected to two periods of food restriction, the first of these immediately after dosage ceased and the second 4 months later. DDT-dosed birds from all dosage levels died in each period of food restriction. Before the weight loss that accompanied food restriction, the brains of DDT-dosed birds had concentrations of DDT and DDD that were far below the lethal range. Concentrations increased rapidly to lethal levels. In these birds, DDT in carcasses decreased while DDD increased. DDT-dosed birds that died during food restriction lost 16 percent of their total body burden of DDT + DDD + DDE, 21 percent of their weight, and 81 percent of their fat. The DDT-dosed birds that were subjected to food restriction but survived lost a significantly greater proportion of their body burden of residues than similarly dosed birds not subjected to weight loss. Brain levels of DDT and DDD in birds that died during food restriction soon after dosage did not differ significantly from brain levels of birds that died in a period of food restriction 4 months after dosage. Concentrations of DDE were significantly higher in the latter group, although they were lower than concentrations considered to be lethal. In contrast, carcass levels of DDT and DDD were significantly lower, and DDE was only slightly higher, in the birds that died in the second period of food restriction. It is concluded that stored DDT residues present a hazard to birds, which utilize stored fat during periods of stress due to reproduction, cold weather, disease, injury, limited food supply, or migration.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3799424","usgsCitation":"Van Velzen, A., Stiles, W., and Stickel, L.F., 1972, Lethal mobilization of DDT by cowbirds: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 36, no. 3, p. 733-739, https://doi.org/10.2307/3799424.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"733","endPage":"739","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":487046,"rank":2,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.2307/3799424","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":193456,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"36","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e47fde4b07f02db4c999b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Van Velzen, A.C.","contributorId":15715,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Van Velzen","given":"A.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":333249,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Stiles, W.B.","contributorId":33005,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stiles","given":"W.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":333250,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Stickel, Lucille F.","contributorId":76598,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stickel","given":"Lucille","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":333251,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The deuterium content in snow cores collected at the end of each winter at the same sites, which represents the total snowfall of each interval, shows a depletion in 1968-69 of approximately 20 per mil. The higher snowfall in 1968-69 and the depletion of deuterium can be explained by an uncommonly strong westward flow of cold air over and down the western slopes of the Sierras, which interacted with an eastward flow of moist Pacific air that overrode and mixed with the cold air; this resulted in precipitation that occurred in greater than normal amounts and at a lower than normal temperature. Pluvial periods of the Pleistocene may have had the same shift in air-mass trajectory as the wet 1968-69 year. Snow cores collected in the normal 1970-71 winter have deuterium concentrations that resemble those of the normal 1969-70 winter. Small and nonsystematic differences in samples from these two normal winters are due to variations in climatic character as well as to factors inherent in the sampling sites.","language":"English","publisher":"American Association for the Advancement of Science","doi":"10.1126/science.176.4036.790","issn":"00368075","usgsCitation":"Friedman, I., and Smith, G., 1972, Deuterium content of snow as an index to winter climate in the Sierra Nevada area: Science, v. 176, no. 4036, p. 790-793, https://doi.org/10.1126/science.176.4036.790.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"790","endPage":"793","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":218851,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California, Nevada","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -120.20332154938339,\n              38.685285646134076\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.20332154938339,\n              37.7390228675344\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.59050221328755,\n              37.7390228675344\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.59050221328755,\n              38.685285646134076\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.20332154938339,\n              38.685285646134076\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"176","issue":"4036","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a0003e4b0c8380cd4f52e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Friedman, I.","contributorId":95596,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Friedman","given":"I.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":358286,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Smith, G.I.","contributorId":103694,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"G.I.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":358287,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The moonlike cratered terrain, identified as the dominant surface unit from the Mariner 6 and 7 flyby data, has proven to be less typical of Mars than previously believed, although extensive in the mid- and high-latitude regions of the southern hemisphere. Martian craters are highly modified but their size-frequency distribution and morphology suggest that most were formed by impact. Circular basins encompassed by rugged terrain and filled with smooth plains material are recognized. These structures, like the craters, are more modified than corresponding features on the Moon and they exercise a less dominant influence on the regional geology. Smooth plains with few visible craters fill the large basins and the floors of larger craters; they also occupy large parts of the northern hemisphere where the plains lap against higher landforms. The middle northern latitudes of Mars from 90 to 150† longitude contain at least four large shield volcanoes each of which is about twice as massive as the largest on Earth. Steep-sided domes with summit craters and large, fresh-appearing volcanic craters with smooth rims are also present in this region. Multiple flow structures, ridges with lobate flanks, chain craters, and sinuous rilles occur in all regions, suggesting widespread volcanism. Evidence for tectonic activity postdating formation of the cratered terrain and some of the plains units is abundant in the equatorial area from 0 to 120° longitude.Some regions exhibit a complex semiradial array of graben that suggest doming and stretching of the surface. Others contain intensity faulted terrain with broader, deeper graben separated by a complex mosaic of flat-topped blocks. An east-west-trending canyon system about 100–200 km wide and about 2500 km long extends through the Coprates-Eos region. The canyons have gullied walls indicative of extensive headward erosion since their initial formation. Regionally depressed areas called chaotic terrain consist of intricately broken and jumbled blocks and appear to result from breaking up and slumping of older geologic units. Compressional features have not been identified in any of the pictures analyzed to data. Plumose light and dark surface markings can be explained by eolian transport. Territory boundaries often conformed to natural physical boundaries and appeared to be maintained through some nonaggressive behavior mechanism. Individual foxes traveled extensively throughout the family territory each night. Fox territories appeared to range from approximately 1 to 3 square miles in size, dependent largely on population density. Red foxes used a sequence of dens to rear their pups, and the amount and location of food remains at individual dens changed as the pups matured. The denning season was divided into pre-emergence, confined-use, and dispersed-use periods of 4 to 5 weeks each. Remains of adult waterfowl were collected at rearing dens on six townships in three ecologically different regions of eastern North Dakota. Remains of 172 adult dabbling ducks and 16 adult American coots (Fulica americana) were found at 35 dens. No remains from diving ducks were found. The number of adult ducks per den averaged 1.6, 5.9, and 10.2 for paired townships in regions with relatively low, moderate and high duck populations, respectively. Eighty-four percent of the ducks were females. The species and sex composition of ducks found at dens during early and late sampling periods reflected the nesting chronology of prairie dabbling ducks. Occupied rearing dens were focal points of red fox travel, and the locations of dens may have had considerable influence on predation. Thirty-five of 38 dens found on the six township study areas were on pastured or idle lands. The distribution of rearing dens on the Sand Lake and Arrowwood national wildlife refuges suggested that, on these areas, fox dens were concentrated because of the topography and land-use practices.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3799055","usgsCitation":"Sargeant, A., 1972, Red fox spatial characteristics in relation to waterfowl predation: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 36, no. 2, p. 225-236, https://doi.org/10.2307/3799055.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"225","endPage":"236","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":133755,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Minnesota","county":"Anoka County, Isanti County","otherGeospatial":"Cedar Creek Natural History Area","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-93.0186,45.4131],[-93.0188,45.2984],[-93.0207,45.1258],[-93.2262,45.1255],[-93.2272,45.0373],[-93.2814,45.0374],[-93.2807,45.0498],[-93.2814,45.0539],[-93.2826,45.0584],[-93.2826,45.063],[-93.282,45.0666],[-93.282,45.0689],[-93.2813,45.0717],[-93.2794,45.0753],[-93.2781,45.0794],[-93.2787,45.0835],[-93.28,45.0867],[-93.28,45.0913],[-93.2799,45.0959],[-93.2786,45.1],[-93.2786,45.1036],[-93.2793,45.1064],[-93.2812,45.1077],[-93.2863,45.1119],[-93.2915,45.1155],[-93.2934,45.1187],[-93.2947,45.1215],[-93.296,45.1251],[-93.296,45.1274],[-93.296,45.1297],[-93.2985,45.1329],[-93.3011,45.1356],[-93.3024,45.1388],[-93.3056,45.1416],[-93.3076,45.1429],[-93.3127,45.1448],[-93.3179,45.1466],[-93.3211,45.1484],[-93.3257,45.1512],[-93.3302,45.1539],[-93.3328,45.1544],[-93.3347,45.1549],[-93.3373,45.1558],[-93.3399,45.1576],[-93.3431,45.1599],[-93.3463,45.1626],[-93.3495,45.1663],[-93.3528,45.1699],[-93.3553,45.1727],[-93.3579,45.1745],[-93.3618,45.1759],[-93.3663,45.1768],[-93.3709,45.1777],[-93.3767,45.1805],[-93.3812,45.1832],[-93.3838,45.1855],[-93.3864,45.1878],[-93.3889,45.1892],[-93.3928,45.1914],[-93.3967,45.1933],[-93.4025,45.1956],[-93.4084,45.1965],[-93.4116,45.1983],[-93.4142,45.2001],[-93.4161,45.2038],[-93.418,45.2088],[-93.4193,45.2116],[-93.4226,45.2134],[-93.4252,45.2152],[-93.4264,45.2157],[-93.4297,45.2161],[-93.4362,45.217],[-93.4426,45.2166],[-93.4472,45.2161],[-93.4517,45.2157],[-93.4543,45.2175],[-93.4575,45.2203],[-93.4614,45.2234],[-93.4653,45.2257],[-93.4698,45.2257],[-93.4763,45.2253],[-93.4821,45.2248],[-93.4847,45.2257],[-93.4879,45.2271],[-93.4912,45.2289],[-93.4964,45.2344],[-93.5022,45.239],[-93.5035,45.2399],[-93.5073,45.2417],[-93.5113,45.2431],[-93.5138,45.2454],[-93.5093,45.4163],[-93.5106,45.5598],[-93.5133,45.7335],[-93.1408,45.7312],[-93.1392,45.5602],[-93.0221,45.5576],[-93.0186,45.4131]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Anoka\",\"state\":\"MN\"}}]}","volume":"36","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a60e4b07f02db63538a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sargeant, A.B.","contributorId":13171,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sargeant","given":"A.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":310863,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

No wood duck nesting had been recorded previously in the area. During May-July 1968, 253 ducklings, hand-reared at the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center near Jamestown, North Dakota, were released when 9 to 16 days old into a 0.5-acre enclosure on the refuge, where they grew to flight stage and departed. Seventy-eight nest houses were installed in August on the refuge. About 76 percent of the ducks survived until late September, when southward migration began. The first-year band recovery rate by hunters of 4.7 percent was comparable to that of wild immature wood ducks. Most recoveries occurred between North Dakota and Minnesota in the north and Texas and Louisiana in the south. There were 16 nesting attempts, which produced 175 ducklings, by homing female wood ducks in the boxes in 1969.
