The most significant changes occurred 4 days after exposure. The haematopocitic tissue of the kidney was the most extensively involved but minor degenerative changes were seen in the liver, pancreas, and in the granular cells of the digestive tract. On the 4th day, maximum tissue concentration of virus was reached and the mortality increased. By the 5th day, 90% of the samples showed extensive pathological changes in the kidney, together with variable changes in spleen, liver, pancreas, and gut. In addition, linears of regional extent that may be structurally controlled can be seen, many of which have not yet been recognized in surface mapping. The synoptic view provided by the image brings into focus an orthogonal set of fractures trending north-northeast and east-southeast and not heretofore apparent in regional maps of Alaska. This orthogonal fracture set may reflect a conjugate set of fractures within the crust, which has exerted significant control over the geologic history of the state. Increased resolution in other images from space platforms, such as the resolution of 200 to 650 feet (60 to 200 m) planned for the satellite television cameras of the ERTS program, will permit the discernment of finer detail and a greater accuracy in identifying and locating geologic features.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Association for the Advancement of The crystal tuffs were eraplaced as submarine pyroclastic flows. The evidence permits the interpretation that the massive sulfide lenses are essentially syngenetic and related to hydrothermal brines that discharged into a submarine basin. The host rocks and sulfide lenses were folded and metamorphosed. Two periods of folding can be recognized; during the second period, the older folds were deformed along vertical axes, and some of the chalcopyrite in the major lens migrated downward to form shoots of intersecting veins in the crystal tuff and chloritized tuff (black schist). Fluid inclusions in volcaniclastic and vein quartz appear to be related to deformation and metamorphism and provide no direct evidence on the nature of the primary fluids that presumably introduced the ore metals to the volcanic rocks accumulating on the sea floor. Liquid CO2-bearing inclusions are restricted to rocks and veins near the United Verde deposit and associated chalcopyrite ore shoots. Fluids at that time were CO2-rich, with temperatures of approximately 235 ø C and confining pressures of about 700 bars or less. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"GeoScienceWorld","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.67.7.845","usgsCitation":"Anderson, C., and Nash, J.T., 1972, Geology of the massive sulfide deposits at Jerome, Arizona; A reinterpretation: Economic Geology, v. 67, no. 7, p. 845-863, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.67.7.845.","productDescription":"19 p.","startPage":"845","endPage":"863","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":372893,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona","otherGeospatial":"Jerome","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -112.2747802734375,\n              34.41144164327245\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.87377929687499,\n              34.41144164327245\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.87377929687499,\n              34.939985151560435\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.2747802734375,\n              34.939985151560435\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.2747802734375,\n              34.41144164327245\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"67","issue":"7","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1972-11-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Anderson, C.A.","contributorId":105277,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Anderson","given":"C.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":783842,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Nash, J. The system must satisfy the need for information for accounting, surveillance, and areal synthesis purposes. The network is designed by identifying specific needs in terms of maps, analyses, and studies that will provide the basic knowledge for understanding each particular phase of the groundwater system. Each specific need is then analyzed with respect to whether it will provide information on accounting, surveillance, or areal synthesis. If a particular type of map, analysis, or observation can serve any of these three functions, a network of data collection or a program of studies is outlined in detail that will provide the information needed. The method of design necessitates the establishment of accuracy levels for maps, the density of data points, confidence limits, and so forth. The information system should be under the general guidance of a single agency, but much of the work and responsibility to carry out the details of the system must be shared by a number of agencies.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/WR008i001p00222","usgsCitation":"Winter, T.C., 1972, An approach to the design of statewide or regional ground water information systems: Water Resources Research, v. 8, no. 1, p. 222-230, https://doi.org/10.1029/WR008i001p00222.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"222","endPage":"230","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":392,"text":"Minnesota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":326402,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"8","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2010-07-09","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"57ada1afe4b0f412a62dfa36","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Winter, Thomas C.","contributorId":84736,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Winter","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":645251,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The only features clearly visible were the south polar cap, one dark, spot in Nix Olympica, and three dark spots in the Tharsis region. During the third week the atmosphere began to clear and surface visibility improved, but contrasts remained a fraction of their normal value. Each of the dark spots that apparently protrude through most of the dust-filled atmosphere has a crater or crater complex in its center. The craters are rimless and have featureless floors that, in the crater complexes, are at different levels. The largest crater within the southernmost spot is approximately 100 kilometers wide. The craters apparently were formed by subsidence and resemble terrestrial calderas. The south polar cap has a regular margin, suggesting very flat topography. Two craters outside the cap have frost on their floors; an apparent crater rim within the cap is frost free, indicating preferential loss of frost from elevated ground. If this is so then the curvilinear streaks, which were frost covered in 1969 and are now clear of frost, may be low-relief ridges. Closeup pictures of Phobos and Deimos show that Phobos is about 25 ±5 by 21 ±1 kilometers and Deimos is about 13.5 ± 2 by 12.0 ±0.5 kilometers. Both have irregular shapes and are highly cratered, with some craters showing raised rims. The satellites are dark objects with geometric albedos of 0.05.</p></div></div><span id=\"related-urls\"></span></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>","language":"English","publisher":"AAAS","doi":"10.1126/science.175.4019.294","issn":"00368075","usgsCitation":"Masursky, H., Batson, R.M., McCauley, J., Soderblom, L., Wildey, R., Carr, M.H., Milton, D., Wilhelms, D., Smith, B., Kirby, T., Robinson, J., Leovy, C., Briggs, G., Duxbury, T.C., Acton, C., Murray, B.C., Cutts, J., Sharp, R., Smith, S., Leighton, R., Sagan, C., Veverka, J., Noland, M., Lederberg, J., Levinthal, E., Pollack, J.B., Moore, J., Hartmann, W., Shipley, E., De Vaucouleurs, G., and Davies, M.E., 1972, Mariner 9 television reconnaissance of Mars and its satellites: Preliminary results: Science, v. 175, no. 4019, p. 294-305, https://doi.org/10.1126/science.175.4019.294.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"294","endPage":"305","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":218778,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"175","issue":"4019","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a51f7e4b0c8380cd6c077","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Masursky, H.","contributorId":33823,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Masursky","given":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":357965,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Batson, R. A conservative lower detection limit for both copper and nickel is '-0.5%. Borehole spectra by both techniques were made in a copper- and nickel-bearing gabbro, utilizing a Ge(Li) propane-cooled detector. Al, Mn, Na, Mg, Cu, and V were readily activated and detected by the delayed method. H, Fe, Si, and Ni were not usually present in the delayed spectra but they responded well in the capture mode. It is shown that the borehole sonde can be configured to permit simultaneous delayed and capture spectra, permitting detection of all of these elements. Simulated borehole experiments indicate that, in the delayed gamma-ray mode, an infinite sample is achieved when the ore layer has a vertical thickness of ∼20 cm and a horizontal distance of '10 cm into the wallrock. The depth resolution is thus relatively good but horizontal penetration through the wallrock is limited. © 1972 Society of Economic Geologists, Inc.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.67.5.579","issn":"03610128","usgsCitation":"Moxham, R., Senftle, F.E., and Boynton, G.R., 1972, Borehole activation analysis by delayed and capture gamma rays using a 252Cf neutron source: Economic Geology, v. 67, no. 5, p. 579-591, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.67.5.579.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"579","endPage":"591","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":369297,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"67","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1972-08-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moxham, R.M.","contributorId":42234,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moxham","given":"R.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":775521,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Senftle, F. The average dissolved uranium concentration and radioactivity ratio (U234/U238) of Nueces River water were determined to be 2.44 µg/1 and 1.15 respectively. Water from a tributary of the Nueces River, Cayamon Creek, was found to contain an average dissolved uranium concentration of 42.8 µg/1 with an isotopic radioactivity ratio of 1.56. Close inspection of the lateral concentration and isotopic activity ratio of uranium revealed an increase below the confluence of Cayamon Creek with the Nueces River.
